It doesn't say anything if it will be a part of Disney's animated canon or not. Considering it says "Disney/Fox", there is a chance it will not. Then again, Dinosaur was never meant to be canon either.
Animated sci-fi is for some reason not always a success at Disney, but I hope this is if done right.

This is for Fox so it's dedinately not canon. It will probably be a co-production between Fox Animation and a third-party studio.
Fox/Disney has attached Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi to “crack” Flash Gordon, as an animated feature film. John Davis is producing. I had heard that the inventive filmmaker Waititi was signing on to write and direct, but his camp indicates it’s too early to gauge exactly what his role would be.

Sounds like a project they brought with the from Fox to Disney. Hopefully it is not performance capture, and no comedy. Either way, it's gonna be interesting to see what they have in mind.
