X-Men '97

Post by Sotiris »

Here's a small scoop: the cast of the '90s X-Men: The Animated Series will be reuniting at Los Angeles Comic Con on Oct. 12. It will be the first time actors Cal Dodd (Wolverine), Lenore Zann (Rogue), George Buza (Beast) Chris Potter (Gambit) and Chris Britton (Mr. Sinister) will have appeared together on stage since the end of the fondly-remembered Saturday morning cartoon.

But that's not all: the creative team behind X-Men tells us they are planning on approaching Disney with a pitch for an onscreen continuation of the series, perhaps a season of TV that'd keep the aesthetic of the show. "The one thing we'd like to do more than anything else is to continue where we left off," longtime X-Men artist Larry Houston says.

This doesn't make a lick of sense. X-Men '97 is a direct sequel to the original animated series, not a reboot or a reimagining. You can't just retcon an established character five seasons in. Second, this is set in 1997 when non-binary identities and they/them pronouns were not a thing. Diversity quotas should not come before continuity, consistency or character integrity. They could have easily introduced a new character for their LGBT representation. Turning Morph into one is lazy and poor-quality storytelling. Just because he's a shapeshifter doesn't mean he was meant to be non-binary, unless you make all the shapeshifters in this universe non-binary too.

I'll wait to judge, I'm too big of an X-Men fan to not give it a shot. I'm looking forward to seeing more of my favorite character, Beast. Retconning Morph is silly, though.

So far I'm enjoying it! It's hand-drawn animated for one thing.

The people who saw the first footage at SDCC 2022 said it was traditionally animated.

So, it has to be hand-drawn in some kinda way.
Sotiris wrote: Thu Feb 15, 2024 3:14 pm The character animation is very stiff. Especially when the characters are talking or making expressions. It looks like it's either cel-shaded CG animation or Flash/vector-based 2D animation. Regardless, it's not true 2D and certainly not up to par with the usual level of quality Studio Mir projects have. :headshake:

The poster being comprised of VHS tapes is such blatant and tacky nostalgia-bait.
I’m going with Flash/vector-based 2D animation, since people who worked on the series said they worked hard to maintain a 2D look for the show as hard as possible.

Also, yeah that’s the point of those posters, they’re supposed to lean in on nostalgia.

What’s your point?

When I first saw the VHS tape promo, I did think it was a little tasteless. It seems like they're (mostly) pitching to our age group (I am 36), and we love the X-Men Animated Series already, you don't have to bait us in. We're already here for it.

I do hope they keep to historical accuracy regarding the terminologies they're scripting in '97.

It was confirmed they'll be using they/them pronouns for Morph, so I doubt they care about era-accurate terminologies at all.

A day later, Marvel launched the trailer for X-Men ’97, a revival of the 1990s cartoon that debuts in March. The trailer set an internal Disney record as the biggest launch for an animated series on Disney+, ahead of other Marvel shows such as What If …? and any animated Star Wars series.

I'm sorry, but does this concern for "historical accuracy" (in a show about a team of fictional mutant characters in alternate 1990s no less) extend only to gender terms or language in general? Because I don't remember anyone here making a stink about:
- the use of word "teenager" in The Little Mermaid
- whatever was going on with Mel Gibson's accent in Pocahontas
- all of Hercules
- "crossdresser" in Mulan

And outside of personal preference, there's really nothing tacky about the use of VHS tapes for promo reasons; nostalgia-baity yes, tacky no. The '90s were VHS's heyday, episodes of the original show were released on tapes, and more recently Marvel Legends X-Men TAS figures were released in VHS-style packaging. It's meant to invoke a certain feeling of the era. That's like saying using storybook openings for fairytale movies is tacky. You might as well complain about this show's existence in the first place because the only reason it exists is nostalgia for the original one.

It's not so much an issue of historical accuracy, but rather of consistency and continuity with the previous seasons. This is not a reboot or a reimagining that happens to play fast and loose with historical accuracy. It's a direct sequel. And while being historically inaccurate is a valid creative approach when it comes to new projects, it's not when it comes to sequels, which by their very definition, have to follow what came before.

Turning Morph into a non-binary character is, undeniably, a massive retcon. Despite being a shapeshifter, his default form was male and he was only referred to as such. You can't just take an established character five seasons in and radically change them just so you can conveniently check off your diversity box. And they are not just changing his gender identity or how people refer to him now, but his entire appearance. His base form now looks like an alien instead of a man.

It's sad people feel the need to defend this stupid, nonsensical decision because of politics. The same people who would otherwise be outraged had they changed something less significant like a character's hair color are suddenly cheering this on because of ideology. Ludicrous.

Again, we're talking about a show that had giant robots try to capture a girl who can create fireworks with her hands and a guy with metal claws saved her. In the show's version of (supposedly) 1992. So what historical accuracy are we talking about here?

X-Men's entire comic book history is one of changes and retcons, so why is Morph's newfound gender identity suddenly continuity-breaking? Not to mention how no one has seen these new episodes yet and we don't know how and if it's addressed, so I don't understand the need to be angry and upset over something that we don't know how it even plays out? And to be honest, it's probably one change that unlike most X-Men stories is actually very true to real-life. Some men have lived their whole lives as heterosexuals with ZERO homosexual experiences only to come out as gay very late in life. X-Men's very own Elliot Page came out first as a lesbian and then transgender in the span of a few years. Would you tell a real person like Elliot he's changed radically just so he'd tick off a diversity box? People learn new things about themselves and change all the time in real life, why would a member of a group that has historically been diverse and used to represent various minorities be any different? Storm got a new haircut and Morph found out a thing or two about themselves. There. Such a terrible, reality-breaking retcon. Even if it's not addressed, who cares? We see Jean pregnant in the trailer; do we need someone to explain to us that she and Scott had sex because we hadn't seen it?

Also, Morph's base form in the comics IS featureless and alien-like, and has been such for the past 20 years or so. If anything, they're adapting that part of the comics now.

What's sad, stupid and non-sensical is the CONSTANT outrage over things that have zero effect on my life or yours, but could mean a lot to someone struggling with their own identity and place in the world. Ludicrous indeed.

Mooky, you sound like a typical ideologue of all things social justice for the sake of sounding smart and politically proper. Your arguments hold no weight because your approach is “this is so silly - fantasy, robots, kids with powers, blah blah,” which is simply a nonsensical, illogical argument. Everything you posted shows your lack of passion for X-Men and its continuity. You don’t take the property seriously, that’s evident in your weightless argument. Your Ellen/Kitty reference holds no weight too, by the way, because that is the Fox X-Men Universe, not the animated universe. And that wasn’t in-story. She appears as Kitty again in Days of Future Past, still a woman. What’s your point? How does her personal gender issues affect X-Men the animated series? It does not.

X-Men has always been a story of outcasts and rebels. But as has been stated this particular show is a sequel to an already established continuum. Nobody really cares about Morph, and with his shape shifting abilities he was an easy target to change. So nothing will come of it, they’ll just shove their agenda down the throats of us 30-something’s who really could give a damn less about gender narratives. Gen Z has doomed popular media with this poisonous injection, and unfortunately it seems like many people like yourself buy into it.

I wish you had worked on your reading comprehension before you decided to respond to my post, but I guess it was too much of an effort and you ended up sounding like a typical bigoted uneducated zealot anyway.

Please scroll back up to your own post where you initiated this whole discussion by invoking "historical accuracy." I've lived through the '90s and I don't rememeber guys shooting optical beams out of their eyes and shapeshifters running around. If you do, it could be a symptom of an underlying medical condition and I'd advise you to go see a doctor about it.

Point is, unless Morph in the original stood up and said, I'm a proud man and I would never see myself as anything but a man, these ridiculous notions that Morph being non-binary in the sequel show is somehow breaking the X-Men continuity/universe/world itself are completely unfounded.

You are right about one thing though:

Was that supposed to offend me?

I did initiate the historical accuracy topic, as the show is literally centered on the X-Men in 1997. Read the title. And you speak of my reading comprehension? You need to return to college. If you went back and read my initial post, it's quite cordial and simply inquiring.

The fact that your only argument is that the show is fantasy falls flat on its face. Why are you even here, then? You don't appreciate the continuity that quality fantasy/sci-fi affords? What kind of wind-bag retort are you trying to lean on? I repeat, there is no support to your weightless argument.

I feel sorry for your type, I'm sad to call you part of my generation. One would think college (if you attended) would have taught you to recognize when agendas: political, social, economic, or otherwise, are steeped in narratives of popular TV shows. That's a problem when it's forced onto something like X-Men that has been around for awhile and people really care about the property. But alas, you lack this simple comprehension to understand this, and actually buy into the agenda. You maybe lived through the 90s, but it must have been in a fog of self-loathing and jealousy of your fellow male contemporaries who were, no doubt, better looking than you and have caused this sense of social justice insecurity you have so strongly manifested. Aw, don't let it get you down, it's not 1997 anymore.

Your willingness to proudly wear my words as your signature is proof of my words living rent-free in your head. I like that. Thank you.

Yes, yes, go on, let the hate flow through you  You forgot to add that I don't even have a high-school diploma. Oh, and not only am I painfully unattractive, I'm dirt poor too.

X-Men have always been a stand-in for persecuted minorities and reflected social discourse of the time in their stories. Social commentary (or what you call "agenda") has been at the core of X-Men storytelling since their inception. And if you don't get that -- I don't know why I said "if", you clearly don't -- then maybe X-Men (in any incarnation) just aren't for you.

I hope that come March 20 you enjoy watching the documentary known as X-Men '97. Don't let Morph bother you too much. At least you can enjoy the honor of being the first of many bigots infesting and infecting these boards that had the balls to openly spew hate instead of playing mental gymnastics and only being able to come up with flimsy arguments like "continuity" and "historical accuracy" that fall apart once you start poking even the tiniest of holes in them. Case in point, none of you sticklers for historical accuracy bothered to counter-argument me on the use of "teenager" in The Little Mermaid (or any other examples I provided), a word which wasn't in use in the historic 18th century. But then again, we all know it's not the word non-binary you have issues with; it's the people it's attached to. And just like they exist today, they existed in 1997.

Done here. Stay in peace.
