Netflix is taking on a key character from the King Arthur legend, Lady of the Lake. The Internet network has teamed with famed comic book writer/artist Frank Miller (Sin City) and writer/producer Tom Wheeler (Puss In Boots) for original drama series Cursed. Netflix has given a 10-episode order to the project, which will be based on Miller and Wheeler’s upcoming illustrated YA book of the same name. This is believed to be the first time the same creative team will be writing a book and TV series based on it simultaneously as they get to explore the characters from the book in more detail on screen.

Cursed is a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue, a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake. After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a young mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther.

Cursed, the TV series, is created by Miller and Wheeler who will executive produce. Wheeler is writing the book, with Miller providing full-color and black-and-white illustrations. It will be published in fall 2019 by Simon & Schuster.

“I have always been entranced by the mythological Arthur story—and by Nimue, in particular. It can be interpreted in any number of ways—from a delightful children’s story, as in The Sword in the Stone, to a terrifying interpretation like Excalibur,” Miller said in a statement when the book was announced last week. Added Wheeler, “I am honored and humbled to be working with the living legend Frank Miller on Cursed. I cannot think of a writer-artist who has had a more formative impact on my growth as a storyteller.”

Former 13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford is returning to Netflix as the lead, Nimue, in Cursed, the Internet network’s upcoming series from famed comic book writer/artist Frank Miller (Sin City) and writer/producer Tom Wheeler (Puss In Boots), which takes on a key character from the King Arthur legend, Lady of the Lake.

Zetna Fuentes (Ray Donovan, Jessica Jones) will direct and serve as an executive producer on the first two episodes of the 10-episode series, based on Miller and Wheeler’s upcoming illustrated YA book of the same name.

Devon Terrell (Barry), Gustaf Skarsgård (Westworld, Vikings), Daniel Sharman (Fear the Walking Dead, Medici), Peter Mullan (Ozark), Lily Newmark (Pin Cushion), Shalom Brune-Franklin (The State, Our Girl), Sebastian Armesto (Poldark, Broadchurch), Emily Coates (Flack), Catherine Walker (Versailles, The Delinquent Season) and Billy Jenkins (The Crown, Holmes & Watson, Humans) join Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why, Love, Simon) in the cast of Cursed.

Zetna Fuentes (Ray Donovan, Jessica Jones, The Deuce, Shameless) will direct and serve as an executive producer on the first two episodes. The series is created and executive produced by Frank Miller (Sin City, 300) and Tom Wheeler (Puss in Boots, The Cape) who is also showrunner and writer. Tom Wheeler will write the companion book Cursed, which Frank Miller will illustrate to be published by Simon & Schuster in Fall 2019. Alex Boden (Sense8, Cloud Atlas) is producer and Silenn Thomas is co-executive producer.

Cursed, based on the upcoming book of the same name, is a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of the young woman who would become the Lady of the Lake. Cursed is a coming-of-age story with themes familiar to our own time: the obliteration of the natural world, religious zeal and oppression, senseless war and finding the courage to lead in the face of the impossible.

The series will begin filming in March 2019 in England and Wales.

I love the idea of this focusing on Nimue. Hopefully it lives up to its potential.

The "What if..." tagline of the poster would get me to watch, personally. A genderbent version of the Camelot cast of character would actually be fun to think about. A male Morgan le Fay (I imagine something similar to Ardyn from Final Fantasy XV, for anyone who's ever played that game), a female Lancelot and Mordred, a Round Table of women, etc.

I tried watching the first episode and tuned out midway cause it wasn't very interesting. I didn't think it would be good, but I thought it would be trash I could enjoy but it wasn't. The acting was subpar as well. There was never an Arthurian Legend adaptation I was satisfied with, I wonder why people have difficulties with that story.

I was going to watch it for Katherine Langford but I heard really bad reviews for the show and it seems pretty trite and unoriginal.

I recommend you watch 13 Reasons Why with Langford instead since you were considering that. The first season at least.

I watched about half of the first episode. I might pick it up and watch a little more later, we’ll see; I've been overload watching a lot of different things, and my eyes are a little tired/strained. I think I’d have been more interested in a straight up genderbent version of the tale. Oh, well.
