Lots of sequels on that list. I didn't know we were getting new installments of The Boss Baby, Hotel Transylvania or The Addams Family next year. The films that look more likely to be awards contenders to me right now are Ghibli's Earwig and the Witch, Pixar's Luca, Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon and Encanto (which is most likely the untitled WDAS film slated for November) and Sony's Vivo. The Bad Guys from DreamWorks also looks like it could have potential. Although, there are always surprises. Some movies that look really good sometimes aren't and vice versa. And some foreign or independent films not listed there could also have a chance.

We don't know all of the films that are going to be submitted next year yet. There will probably be plenty of changes and rescheduling. As of now, the most likely contenders to me are the following:

I just chose from the films listed in that article, but I agree with your picks. I hadn't heard of Inu-Oh and I didn't know Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is finally going to be released next year, but they do look like likely contenders, as well as Cartoon Saloon's My Father's Dragon and Henry Selick's Wendell & Wild.

By the way, I think the reason GKIDS is submitting Earwig and the Witch this year rather than saving it for next year is because the film will be seen for the first time on Japanese television on December 30. And Academy rules disqualify films that air on television before they play theatrically (although streaming and VOD are a different story, especially this year). So GKIDS is required to give the film a qualifying run before that day in order for Earwig to be able to compete for the Oscar.

^That makes sense, it must be because of that that GKIDS is submitting the film this year.

uh what's with all the dragon movies coming out next year?! Its too bad Disney couldn't release Raya this year.

My guess is the usual chasing after Disney's coattails, only Raya unfortunately got pushed back. Even though Raya being in development is probably what triggered all those dragon films from other studios trying to cash-in, it'll blend in with them now that it's being released around the same time as them.

I remember when three animated yeti movies (Smallfoot, Missing Link and Abominable) happened to be released one right after the other and there were people wondering how that could happen. One artist on Twitter, who has worked at a number of major animation studios, said the reason this happened wasn't because of someone copying the other, so much as people pitching ideas that just happened to center on the same kind of creature. So many movies are pitched at animation studios and it's not unusual for more than one person to have an idea for a movie involving a yeti or a dragon or a specific kind of bird.

The original concept for "Rio" was going to involve a penguin who washes up on the beaches of Rio, but Carlos Saldanha changed this when he noticed other animated movies (Happy Feet, Surf's Up, Madagascar) coming out that had penguins as major characters. He then changed it to the current plot of the film after finding out about Spix's macaws being endangered, which ironically may have had an effect on "Newt" getting cancelled at Pixar as they ended up having plot similarities.

Yeah, I don't buy that. It's just like A Bug's Life and Antz back in the day--the lesser studios always chase the trends set by the bigger studios.

Sony Pictures Animation (the studio producing Wish Dragon) and Cartoon Saloon (My Father's Dragon) are pretty well established at this point. I don't think you can really call them "lesser studios."

Call them what you want, that has nothing to do with the overlying point anyway. Way to miss the forest for the trees.

isn't it also possible that with so many ideas being pitched and then rejected by studios that its possible sometimes a few artists find out about a pitch while working there, then they leave to join another studio for whatever reason and then they pitch something similar after hearing about it from their stint at the previous studio?

also I don't remember where I read this, but is it true that once somebody pitches a project at a studio that concept forever becomes the property of the studio even if it doesn't end up becoming a movie? I don't know if its just the concept/idea alone or more concrete stuff like names/concept art/scripts etc.

Movies with similar concepts coming out so close to each other is pretty common in the live-action world, too. In the late '80s, four age-swapping/body-swapping movies were released only a few months apart (Like Father Like Son, 18 Again, Vice Versa, Big) to the point the makers of "Big" were concerned audiences would grow tired of seeing those kinds of movies as it was the last of the four to open. And yet in the end, "Big" ended up being by far the most successful of the bunch and the only one of those four most people remember.

There's also the possibility of more indie films such as Calamity, Josep, and Little Vampire to be acquired by GKIDS or Shout! Studios and submitted for consideration.

Netflix also has Arlo the Alligator Boy scheduled for 2021.

I was recently looking at the animated movies Netflix has coming next year and it's amazing how many promising projects they have on the horizon and just for 2021. And I'm sure they will pick up more indie and foreign films as the year goes on. Between the animated movies Disney, Netflix and Sony Animation are releasing, Best Animated Feature is sure to be super competitive next year on top of whatever GKIDS decides to qualify.

Is it really a feature-length film? I heard it's a TV special that's serves as a pilot to the series. I tried to find its running time, but had no luck. If it's less than 40 minutes, it's not eligible.

Every article I read said Arlo was a movie. But I guess we'll have a better idea of whether it's a movie or an extended pilot for the series closer to release.
