Shrek reboot announced by Universal

You've got to be kidding.....Why is so much of Hollywood unoriginal now?! I don't get why not making a sequel/prequel/midquel, or using the new story idea with brand new characters, locations/worlds, etc...they think it'll make more $ just because it has Shrek? Maybe it will and that's the point?

*edit* They want to get the original voice actors back? So it's not so much a reboot as a continuation, eh? I'm totally fine with that.

But what does
“The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.”
even mean? Redesigning the characters? New origin story, same voices? We'll see...

*edit* I'm just doing my routine Disney news scouting, & Shrek news is everywhere!

UPDATE: Sources with knowledge of the situation tell Cartoon Brew that the initial report in Variety was misleading, and although Illumination head Chris Meledandri could potentially be involved with the upcoming Shrek film, it will still be a Dreamworks Animation film and produced by Dreamworks’ animation team.

I'm not sure I'm interested in anything else Shrek-related. The first 2 were the only ones worth watching anyway, although I can see them lampooning the new Disney princesses.

I think Hollywood really does feel like its eating itself up at the moment, and it's a real real shame. The terminology is also bandied about all wrong; a reboot surely can't involve the original cast ? Retooling would be the same I'd imagine .... so why don't they just say " We are going to do another Shrek ! We did too many and over saturated you for EVERYTHING Shrek. It has now been long enough, and we think he can come back now ". Would respect that far more !

I totally agree. It's just another sequel. There was no reason for all that confusion.

I wonder where they can go with the story ?

I'd love to have more of Fiona's backstory, I'd happily watch that.

Oh, that's a good idea. They could do it using flashbacks if they don't want to commit to a proper prequel or spin-off.

The trailer for Puss in Boots 2 is out. The way it's being promoted is interesting. Are they planning for a Shrek cinematic universe or something?
