I'm really glad he's going to direct the sequel. As I've said before, I loved Black Panther (I've already seen it four times: twice in the theater and twice at home) and I think Ryan Coogler is a good director. I also liked his film Creed. I haven't seen Fruitvale Station (his first film) yet, but I want to do it soon. This sequel is already my most anticipated upcoming Marvel movie.

I'm surprised they took so long just to confirm. Sort of like with Zootopia 2--we all know it's happening even if it's not talked about yet. I can't wait.

@BlogXilla
Ryan Coogler just walked on stage. #BlackPanther2 is happening. He just handed the treatment. The name of the film is “It’s too early for that.” #D23Expo BP2 will hit theaters May 6th 2022.

Oh, my God... I didn’t even know he was sick. :( What a tragic loss. Not just as Black Panther, which is practically an icon, but as an actor in general. He elevated everything I ever saw him in. He was so very talented. Rest in peace. :(

I can't believe this.

only seen him in Captain America:Civil War(haven't seen BP yet,) very sad. And talk about the WORST time to lose this particular actor considering the role and film he's become iconic for, and the current real world madness happening around us. :( It just feels so wrong...almost... foreboding?. I hope I am wrong.

^ I agree.

As far as the franchise, I wonder what will happen now? I wonder if they will simply reboot it or have a new character takeover the BP mantle with Boseman's character having died offscreen? :( I only thought of the latter because Bassett and Danai Gurira were so great, I'd hate to not see more of those characters if the franchise is going to continue in some form.

It would be weird to reboot at this point. Recasting would feel wrong too.

I know some might see this as insensitive, but...I kinda feel like they could get away with a digital head replacement+sound alike (or digitally augmented to sound closer to him). Only if the family agrees of course. Its obviously going to be a sensitive topic though no matter what they decide.

I was curious about the comics, if T'Challa was the last Black Panther in the comics.

https://marvel-dc.fandom.com/wiki/Shuri
Shuri is the princess of Wakanda and king T'Challa's younger sister. Having longed to one day become the Black Panther much like her brother, she finally took the mantle on when T'Challa was put into a coma by the Cabal, though the Heart Shaped Herb initially rejected giving her power. When she saved her entire nation from Morlun in her brother's absence, the herb recognized her honor, finally giving her its strength and making her an offical secondary Black Panther alongside the king.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Pan ... el_Comics)
Afterward, Killmonger resurfaces with a plot to destroy Wakanda's economy. This forces T'Challa to nationalize foreign companies.[66] Killmonger then defeats him in ritual combat, thus inheriting the role of Black Panther,[67] but falls into a coma upon eating the heart-shaped herb—poisonous to anyone outside the royal bloodline, which had a hereditary immunity to its toxic effects.[68] T'Challa preserves his rival's life rather than allowing him to die.

Later, T'Challa finds he has a brain aneurysm like his alternate future self, and succumbs to instability and hallucinations. After his mental state almost causes tribal warfare, the Panther hands power to his council[69] and hides in New York City. There he mentors police officer Kasper Cole (who had adopted an abandoned Panther costume), an experience that gives T'Challa the strength to face his illness, reclaim his position, and return to active membership in the Avengers, whom he helps secure special United Nations status.
Prince Namor attempts to recruit T'Challa for the Cabal, a secret council of supervillains. Attacked by the forces of fellow Cabal member Doctor Doom, T'Challa is left comatose.[82] His sister Shuri is trained as the next Black Panther, with the mantle passing onto her officially after T'Challa awakens from his coma and attempts to recover from his injuries.[83]
In one comic book storyline, the Black Panther mantle is handled by Kasper Cole, a multiracial New York City police officer. Beginning as an impersonator, Cole would later take on the moniker of White Tiger and become an ally to T'Challa. The role of Black Panther and leadership of Wakanda is also given to T'Challa's sister Shuri for a short time.

I suppose they could make a film where he (digitally created using the technology Kyle referenced) either is put in a coma in an introduction to the film showing recent past events, or they could begin the film en media res with his sister already in the Black Panther role, with occasional flashbacks throughout to show how T'Challa ended up in the coma. I know these superhero franchises rarely "end" entirely, but I could see something similar to the end of that Merlin TV series, where T'Challa is in a coma for the rest of the film series and the final film ends with the shot being of him starting to "wake up".... (You're probably wondering how that's like Merlin, lol. On that show, Arthur dies at the end, but is destined to be reincarnated and Merlin waits for him to resurface in the future. Similar, T'Challa will be destined to reawaken someday and lead Wakanda to greatness in the "future.") After that, I guess they would end up reboot it several years later.

What's wrong with recasting? They already recasted twice in the MCU, Rhodey and Banner.

‘Black Panther 2’ Will Not Use Digital Double Of Chadwick Boseman, Says EP
https://deadline.com/2020/11/black-pant ... 234616030/

Marvel's 'Black Panther' Sequel Shoot to Begin in July (Exclusive)
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat- ... -exclusive
Multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Marvel is now readying Black Panther 2 for a shoot that will start in Atlanta in July and last for upwards of six months.

Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta, who was one of the stars of Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico, is in talks to play one of the antagonists, sources tell THR. Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Angela Bassett are expected to return for the new feature, with some saying Wright’s character may take on a more prominent role.

Marvel, which had no comment on this story, has not revealed its plans on how it plans to proceed without Boseman, although it has indicated that it will not use CGI to include the late star in the film.

So looks like his sister is most likely going to take over. I'm happy the series is continuing in any case and all the other characters will be returning.

I'm glad about that too. All the cast did a great job in the first film (as well as the director and the creative team), so they deserved to get another movie. And Suri really made an impression in the original, so I wouldn't mind if she was the protagonist this time around. However, it's not going to be the same without Chadwick Boseman. I think I hadn't realized until now how much he contributed to my love for Black Panther. This sequel was my most anticipated Marvel film before his passing, but now, though I'm still looking forward to it, at the same time I'm also fearing its release because I know it'll be sad.

I finally didn't reply to this as I had planned to. I like your idea, I hope they do something like this and don't kill T'Challa off. It's sad enough to lose him in real life to lose the character as well. Especially, after he already died at the end of Avengers: Infinity War and had just come back to life again. Sadly, I'm quite sure they'll want to give the character a proper goodbye as a tribute to Chadwick Boseman. Regarding your idea, they wouldn't even need to put him in a coma, they could just set the movie (or movies) during the 5-year period after the snap in which he was absent from Wakanda. The only problem with that is that they wouldn't be able to tie this film/s in with the rest in the MCU.
Barbossa wrote:What's wrong with recasting? They already recasted twice in the MCU, Rhodey and Banner.
Personally, as much as I liked Chadwick in the role, I wouldn't mind he was recast for the reasons I mentioned earlier. It wouldn't be the same, but at least the character would live on. Right now maybe it would be to soon after his passing, but they could do it in the third film.
