To be honest, everytime I saw the trailer it felt off and mediocre to me, so I wasn't surprised by the reaction. It probably didn't help that it's supposed to be the MCU's big prestigous serious film and it's being released closer to Dune.

Well, I wasn't sure how it would be received. After watching Nomadland, I wasn't sure if Chloé Zhao was a good fit for the studio, but she's also a highly acclaimed director, so I didn't expect such a low score either.

The score fell even lower.

Wow, that is surprising. I don't know, I remember a Kingdom Hearts site I visit had this weird negative energy about this movie months back before it was even released. It's almost because people were touting the huge cast that some people wanted it to fail in contrarian fashion. Bizarre. Especially a shame for Jolie as well as the LGBT representation here. :/

The trailers did make the movie seem more somber and serious than previous Marvel films, but I thought that was the marketing's attempt to pass it as a prestige film and an awards contender. Reading the reviews, the most common complaints were that it's overlong, drab, and convoluted. Having such a large cast couldn't have helped either. It's difficult to give adequate time and characterization to so many characters in a single movie.

Disney has refused to censor the gay elements of the film per the director's request resulting in the movie getting banned in various Middle Eastern countries.

   Kudos to Disney for being willing to make a stand on this occasion at least! It sounds like from the reviews the film may end up doing poorly anyway, sadly. At least let it be what it is and don't censor it for the sake of pleasing homophobes.

I wouldn't clap for them so fast. :P Disney removed the same-sex kiss in several other countries of the region such as the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Ethiopia, Turkey, Syria and more.

I just finished watching this and actually liked it for the most part and find it better than a lot of the other Marvel films I've seen. I'm as shocked as everyone else about it. I think it tried to be more than just another comic book action film, and while it gets kinda sloppy on the execution, that means a whole lot more to me. It also didn't hurt that Richard Madden was in it, haha. I enjoyed this more so than Zhao's Nomadland for sure, and it was nice to see her lose the non-professional actors. I know that's her gimmick, but I don't like it one bit.

When I saw the movie I first believed Gilgamesh was played by the same actor who plays Wong in Dr. Strange, and that Ikaris was played by the same actor who playes Bucky/Winter Soldier in Captain America.
Not sure if the actor they got to play Druig was the right choice.

The cinematic version sure is different from the comic version. In the movie they are advanced robots, or at least synthetic beings. So they can't reproduce. In the comic Thanos himself is an Eternal (his grandfather Kronos was responsible for the incident that gave their branch of the Eternals cosmic powers and the ability to create a uni-mind).

The favorite parts were the cosmic scenes and the epic scale.

Originally the idea of planets as eggs for new celestials was not mean to be canon, but used in a non-canon Marvel story. And intelligent life to make sure it hatched? Why go through all the trouble? Just mass produce genetically designed beings that fulfill the purpose.

Didn't get the sickness either. Why use the same artificial minds again and again? Once they have served their purpose it should be easy to get access to their mind and learn from their experiences. Which again is used when they create new Eternals on other planets.

And the Deviants were created specifically to wipe out non-intelligent life that stands in the way for the evolution of intelligent life? A weird tactic, and even weirder that they mighty celestials were suddenly unable to control them.

The gay character doesn't make sense. Because they are artificial and designed, there shouldn't be any coincidences when their mind and personality is built. The only reason for him to be gay is if he was literally made that way. If the Eternals were ordinary flesh and blood, and reproduced like everybody else, one would expect that some of them might turn out to be gay. But a designed character?

Neither did I understand why they made a character be a forever child which longed to grow up (does the character in the comic, which is a male there, have the same problem?). Why not just give her an adult body to begin with if it prevents her from being unhappy? If they are created for a purpose, they should at least have been given a personality that doesn't make their like miserable.

And why design a deaf character? She wasn't actual deaf (even if the actress is); she could sense all vibrations around her, and eavesdrop on people whispering behind her back. But she couldn't talk.

I understand that Disney wants to be inclusive and add some diversity. But there should be an explanation for these things. As mentioned, these are artificial beings, designed by celestials. Probably by trial and errors over and over again for millions of years. The only reason why some of them are gay, a forever child who wants to be an adult, and one of them deaf, is because they were built that way. Or because something happened during their creation. Just introducing them like that without adding any additional info for why some of them stand out makes it more noticeable.
If they had been born like that, from parents of flesh and bone, like in the comic, nobody would have questioned these things.

I wrote this post the day of the storm that broke my Internet for the past week. Actually, it's the second time I wrote it, the first time I was knocked offline, then I went to quickly re-write it before I planned to turn off my PC and then the Internet went off good.

Thank goodness! I personally enjoyed this although I can understand why it may have bored some. I have a feeling a sequel wll be better than the first; that's generally the case with Marvel films because the first spends so much time introducing characters / concepts whereas the sequels can play around with them more, and this one has a lot of fun characters sort of dragged down by the story. This film was so serious 99% of the time and came off dirge-like.

I loved most of the characters here--Druig, Gilgamesh, Kingo, Sersi, Ikaris, Sprite, Makkari. Also Ajak and Thena, to a lesser degree. Gemma Chan is great as a protagonist. It's a shame that Gilgamesh and Ikaris died, I would've liked to have seen more of them, although they could be revived somehow, I suppose... I never put it past Marvel 'verse to be able to bring characters back and I could definitely see Gilgamesh at least getting brought back somehow. I would have been interested in a sequel anyway to see more of Druig and Kingo in particular, but the intro of Harry Styles as Eros at the end made me even more hyped.
