The stuff he posted was really disgusting so I'm really glad to hear this although it says something that Disney was aware of this and didn't have an issue until the news broke out. Reminds me of a certain Roseanne situation.

My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative. I have regretted them for many years since — not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don’t reflect the person I am today or have been for some time.”

“Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today. Even these many years later, I take full responsibility for the way I conducted myself then. All I can do now, beyond offering my sincere and heartfelt regret, is to be the best human being I can be: accepting, understanding, committed to equality, and far more thoughtful about my public statements and my obligations to our public discourse. To everyone inside my industry and beyond, I again offer my deepest apologies. Love to all.
I wonder who brought these old comments to the public's attention.

Either way, let it be a lesson about to be careful about how you use the social media and never write something that can come back and bite you on the ass. (I may not be a celebrity, but I'm always careful about what I post online. On the whole internet, there is perhaps just three or four places where my full name is there for everyone to see, and in a completely harmless context.)

Turns out it was most likely his comments about Trump that surfaced his old (and deleted) tweets:

https://www.thewrap.com/james-gunn-apol ... edophilia/
Gunn, a political liberal who tweets frequently about his opposition to President Donald Trump, drew the ire of fans of the president such as right-wing provocateur Mike Cernovich, who began posting a series of old tweets by Gunn, many subsequently deleted.

On the internet, though, nothing stays buried forever.

And some online sleuths dug up dozens of old tweets of the sort Gunn admitted were “offensive,” many from between 2008 and 2011.

Yes, lately, there are many people who are having old comments from years past being un-buried to destroy them (occasionally taken out of context). I've noticed ABC/Disney, in particular, has the crosshairs on them, to the point that I think Iger's future ambitions may be part of the reason. Perhaps a warning shot fired at him from political opponents? Not that most of the individuals targeted haven't deserved what's happened to them (like Lasseter, for one example), I'm just talking about the forest rather than the trees for a moment.

He had a dark/distasteful sense of humor (that they knew full well of when they hired him) that he's already distanced himself from even before action was taken. So I'm thinking it has to have been politicly motivated. I definately don't support his removal based on the info I've seen so far.

I'm genuinely shocked by Disney's decision. They're making a grave mistake. His comments were extremely disturbing and Disney will rightly be blamed for supporting such a person. I guess when you're a straight, white man with friends at the top nothing you do can bring you down. And it's not like he's some sort of irreplaceable genius. He's a mediocre filmmaker at best. They're much more talented directors out there. They could have easily given a chance to a director from a marginalized group instead of reinstating him.

It's too bad Sotiris that you will be in an awfully small minority on this one. Plus James Gunn hasn't done anything CLOSE to what the likes of Cosby, Spacey, Weinstein, Singer etc have all done.

I always find myself in some sort of minority of opinion so I'm used to it. :P

I never said he did but that doesn't mean he should be rewarded for it. What he said didn't even cost him his career as he produced Brightburn and was hired to direct Suicide Squad 2 post-scandal. Did Disney really need to stay in business with him too? He literally faced zero consequences for his actions.

He did face a consequence; he got fired from Disney.

And then got rehired thanks to Alan Horn, yes, but he's been given another chance and now he's learned from this whole ordeal.

He didn't learn anything new from the time he got fired to now. He was already apologizing long before he ever got fired. possibly even before he got hired in the first place.

Disney made the right call here. Hopefully in the future they'll stick to their guns a bit more and not let mob mentality take over.

I don't mind that he's been re-hired because the comments were bad jokes for the most part rather than evil and/or bigoted comments re:Roseanne. That said, I wouldn't have felt like it was unfair if he had stayed fired either.... People get fired for much less in a normal workplace.

You do realize those bad jokes are from 10 years ago and Disney were aware of them when they first hired him? He hasn't been the man who made those jokes a long time now and he has apologized a lot of times. The way I see it - people make mistakes and everyone does a sh***y thing in their life at some point, if that person learns and grows, he shouldn't be constantly judged over his mistake from 10 years ago.

I'm not sure what you have to base that on. Either way, I wasn't even upset that he was re-hired, only wanted to be clear that there was nothing "unfair" or "mob mentality" about his initial firing either, so re-direct your ire elsewhere.
