Disney is producing Stargirl, an adaptation of the YA novel of the same name that will be released on their streaming service in late 2019. It will be directed by Julia Hart who's replacing Catherine Hardwicke.

An attempt at an adaptation in 2015, had Joey King and Charlie Plummer starring but it's unknown yet if they remain attached or if they've been recast.
Published in 2000, the book centers on a homeschooled teenage girl who enrolls in an Arizona high school and through her non-conformity alters the ecosystem of the student body, while at the same time capturing the heart of star-struck boy. But when the student body turns on her, the boy tells her to go against her nature and try to fit in.

Julia Hart just sealed a deal to helm a feature film version of Stargirl, the young adult novel Stargirl from author Jerry Spinelli which flew off shelves when President Obama bought the book from a Washington D.C. bookstore for his girls in 2015. Stargirl will become one of the first — if not the first — original film for Disney’s new streaming platform. It is also being adapted and produced by a woman. The book is in the late stages of development and being adapted by Kristin Hahn to shoot in the fall. It is being produced by The Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lee Stollman with Hahn and her production company Hahnscape.

Posters and trailer. I can't believe Disney thought it was a good idea to make a Manic Pixie Dream Girl movie. It's so ironic the movie is called Stargirl but she's not the protagonist and her story and character is filtered through the lens of a boy.

It looks super uplifting and cute. And a musical!! Definitely looking forward to it. I haven't read the book but I'm guessing the book is told through the guy's point of view. I think the main point is that he felt invisible until Stargirl saw him. I mean, it's not too different from Sleeping Beauty , with her not being the main character but the action happens because of her.

I remember there were a lot of Jerry Spinelli books at my school but I never read any of his stuff. If I like this movie, maybe it'll prompt me to check out his books.

There's a comic character from DC named Stargirl so I always got confused as to why Disney was making a film on her.

Ha, I've been having that problem, too. It doesn't help that she's getting her own show soon, as well.
