Inside Out 2

We may be getting a sequel to
Inside Out.
Q. Obviously the end of the film is somewhat open for a sequel. Would you like to go back to this world ever?
Pete Docter: After five years… we do have ideas but I kind of feel like it’s nice to have it finished and I’m looking forward to looking at new things. For me personally part of the fun is discovering these new worlds and creating them. Nothing existed and now you have this reality you believe in. That’s the joy of watching it as well as working on it.
Q. Would you be happy with another Pixar filmmaker taking on a sequel?
Pete Docter: You’d want to make sure it was a worthy idea and there was a reason for doing it. At this point I think the movie’s done its one of a kind. You never know – you always get into trouble when you have blanket statements like that.

“We'll see if anything turns up,” he says regarding the possibility of an Inside Out 2. “To me it's not as simple as we liked it, so lets make another one. What happens is you design these characters not so much looks-wise but as they are as character and people for a story. So we’ll explore it and see what happens.”

“We’ve talked about a sequel but we haven’t come up with anything yet that I feel would merit it,” he says, calmly.

Q: Inside Out did very well, are there any plans for Inside Out 2?
Jim Morris: Not right now. Pete [Docter] and Jonas [Rivera], the producer, have a new and equally weird idea that they are working on – so we will play through on that for a while! But I wouldn’t rule it out. The nice thing about working for Disney is that they don’t really dictate. I mean, I’m sure they would love to have another Inside Out, but it would be a long way off, if at all.

You know what? I think a sequel or at least an expansion of that universe would be suitable for "Inside Out". The premise really is something that could've been explored more in a sequel and perhaps better.

That might be the case now, but out of all the new Pixar films from the last decade, this was the most successful. I wouldn't be surprised to see a sequel for it within the next ten years or so.

Another rumor, this time from a website called Puck News. We'll soon find out if it's true or not:

Puck News is a reliable site. It's run by the former editor of The Hollywood Reporter. He has lots of connections in the industry.
The news of the recasting is a bit disappointing. I hope they can find good sound-alikes for the roles of Fear and Disgust. The real question is whether Pete Docter will be directing it or not.

That sucks... I love Hader and Kaling both (and Disgust was probably the best of the emotions along with Anger and Joy)... I always said this film had potential much like
Toy Story to go forever, and the first sequel they get they already lose two of the stars.

I do get the role of Joy is much, much bigger than Disgust, Fear, or Anger, but still.... 5 million v. 100, 000 is a massive difference. You'd think it would've been 5 million v. $500-700,000 or something. I mean,
I would take $100,000 for a background voice role

...but that's peanuts for people in show business, I know, and they deserve to be paid fairly in comparison to the other actors, not to mention the
huge profit the film will likely make.

The report says Disney increased the offer, but they still refused. By how much, we don't know. It seems greedy on their part, to be honest. These are minor characters with limited screentime. You can't expect to be paid the same as the protagonist.

OK, thanks for the info. Then it's most likely true. The fact that they shared those details about the casting made the report seem more believable, but I hadn't heard about that news site before, so I didn't know how reliable it was.

The leak has been confirmed to be true. Curiously, only Amy Poehler has been announced to be returning, so the rest of the story is probably also accurate.
Oh JOY! Amy Poehler is back to star in Inside Out 2. Directed by Kelsey Mann, produced by Mark Nielsen, and written by Meg LeFauve, Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 releases Summer 2024.

Riley is now a teenager and there are new emotions joining the mix.
*Edit*

The movie will once again take place inside Riley's head, with all of the emotions from the original returning for the sequel.

Excellent news!

It makes completely sense to portray the sequel from Riley`s point of view as a teenager (for compelling reasons)! But frankly, perhaps they`ve should`ve done it in the first place with the predecessor.

Wouldn't the introduction of new emotions cause a continuity error/plot hole with the first one, because even adults and animals were seen to possess only five basic ones? Unless their HQ is someplace else and not in the brain. We'll see how this is explained (if it is).
As for the (not) returning cast members: meh. Those two were bit parts anyway. Money should be better spent on professional/non-celebrity voice actors anyway. Even Poehler is overpaid.

That's a good point. I hope they do give us an explanation for that. Maybe these new feelings are temporary ones caused by puberty and subside when one reaches adulthood.

Meh. She had about 5 minutes of screentime in the original, and her voice isn't that distinct for the eventual replacement to be noticeable. I'm super tired of celebrities being hired for voice roles when they can't really bring anything unique to the role -- it's one thing to hire a vocal powerhouse like Robin Williams or James Woods who imbued their characters with vigor and life, and another one to hire Chris Pratts, Beyoncés, Mel Gibsons or Mindy Kalings just because they're (or were at one time) popular with general audiences.

I'm surprised PIXAR isn't being raked over the coals for refusing to pay a Muslim actress what she's worth. The misogyny, racism, and Islamophobia of it all.
