Hercules on Stage

Post by Sotiris »

Disney's working on a stage production of Hercules! Here's hoping it will make it to Broadway! :herc:
Alan Menken wrote:I have a very strong belief like “Newsies,” “Hercules” is going to have a moment that will surprise people. Actually, I’m working on a stage version of “Hercules.”

YES! I thought this and Pocahontas both had a low chance of ever happening. I hope it pans out. I would love to hear new songs for Herc and Meg. I just wonder if they're going to do something similar to the Hunchback musical and go all serious with adapting the source material. I kind of hope not.

OMG yeay!!! what a surprise! It will be perfect for Broadway and a lot of fun! and Hades also needs a song! Also hope this will give the movie/characters some attention since Disney practically ignores it.

Interesting. It's getting some love at D23 and now this.

Maybe Disney is seeing some potential in it as a 'nostalgic property'. Would be great if it became more visible in the parks, merchandise, etc. It's such as underrated film. The music easily beats most modern Disney musicals.

At least Pocahontas had a lower chance of happening, due to it's position and it's backlash of historical inaccuracy. However, Disney still decided to adapt Hunchback, despite of it's controversy and that it has a lower fanbase than both Pocahontas and Hercules (though Hunchback has been rated higher on IMDb, there were still people who've given more votes on Pocahontas and Hercules than on Hunchback. And the Facebook likes for Hunchback are relatively much lower than for the other two, if you don't believe me, then look it up).

However, regardless of the attention Disney has been given these pictures, it seems as Hercules has gained a bigger fanbase these later years and that people have warmed up to it and given it attention and praise for it's strengths. At least Disney have been given Pocahontas some attention afterwards, whereas Hunchback has been given little besides the stage adaptation. But perhaps this means that Pocahontas could receive a stage treatment as well, since it certainly is suitable for one.

However, this is still good news for our Herc. Perhaps there will be made music numbers for Herc as an adult to sing?

I hope this just means that the project is in very early stages and Disney wasn't ready for an announcement yet.
A Disney Theatrical Productions spokesman denied the project, saying, “Hercules is one of many great Menken scores, but no stage adaptation is in development at this time.”

Hunchback is a serious movie, while Hercules isn't. I don't think there is a way to make Hercules serious without making it boring.

As for the Disney Theatrical denial, they could easily just not be aware. I'm sure Menken could be preparing a score to present it to them later.

Hercules is coming! :D
On the one hand, he’s got another Disney musical coming to Broadway (as yet unannounced) as well as the upcoming film Disenchanted, a long-in-the-works Enchanted sequel that will deconstruct his style once more.

Wow! Now I just hope they don't alter it to be more serious like Hunchback; Hercules was always a comedy that made no attempt to be faithful to the source.

I hope there will be some new songs for the Muses; I'm sure he'll do fine re-visiting that sound, considering "She's in Love" was one of the best of the new tracks for TLM on Broadway. I'm sure Herc/Meg will get at least one new one (perhaps one together?). Hopefully Megara gets to go full-on sass with a song similar to Jasmine's cut "Call Me a Princess." For Herc, I'd like something epic along the lines of Cheyenne Jackson singing "Don't Walk Away" from Xanadu. I'm not sure if I want Hades to have a song or not....

I don't think they'll try to make it more serious. Then they would have to make a lot of changes and the existing songs probably wouldn't fit.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Hercules is never actually stated to be Menken's next Broadway musical in the article, right? I think people might be jumping to conclusions that it is Hercules. Wasn't there talk of bringing Galavant to the stage a while back? And I think Menken has mentioned interest in bringing Enchanted to the stage as well. Plus, Tangled is the most popular out of his works that have yet to be adapted for the stage. It's likely that any of those might be coming to Broadway rather than Hercules.

It's Hercules. Menken didn't say so in the interview but a very reliable source confirmed it to me in private.

Wonderful news if this is indeed Hercules !

Such an underrated film from Disney, they use it literally nowhere in the parks as far as I know ... ?

Oh ok. Thanks for confirming! That is exciting that Hercules will finally get some sort of promotion from Disney. I can't wait to see how they flesh out the characters.

Q: What the next chapter for Alan Menken and Disney On Broadway?

Alan Menken: Well, we have more coming. Things I can't talk about. We're working on lots of different things together. It's just an ongoing, exiting place to be. It's unimaginable what they've become.

Can't wait for the announcement. I'm really looking forward to how they expand the story along with the new songs. I hope they can flesh out the Olympians more.

I really hope "Shooting Star" is restored in the show. I believe inducing both that and "Go the Distance" can work if "Shooting Star" is used as Herc's proper 'I Want' song whereas "Go the Distance" is moved further down in the story as a more of a power anthem.
