I see it as, like that other live TLM show, a way to test out certain actors for roles in the movie.
I was listening to something with Cheyenne Jackson the other day and couldn't help thinking he would’ve been perfect for Eric if he was younger.

I was really really really excited about this when I first found out, then I read the article and realized it wasn't a live version of the musical like the other networks are doing, is just the film with live songs. It doesn't really make sense to me.

At first I thought this might be a recording of the concert they did last summer (
http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/ ... inal-ariel) but Broadway World have just confirmed that it's not but it will be "modeled after" that event. And if it does well they might do more!
More details here -

Last year's concert wasn't just the film, it also included some of the Broadway songs as well (the Broadway World article includes a video of them performing If Only). Really excited for this!!

I hope it's only getting delayed and not cancelled. I was really looking forward to it.
ABC has seemingly made a move regarding their planned airing of a special airing of The Little Mermaid with live performances. The broadcast had been scheduled for October 3, but in announcing their season premiere dates, ABC's Tuesday comedies are scheduled to premiere in that slot. It is unknown if the show has been cancelled, delayed, or rescheduled at this point.

Might as well. I can't say I was excited for it. Mostly I was just curious who they might have picked for the songs and if they might be in contention for the LA re-make.

I'm glad. Now they have the chance to think about it and make a truly live musical. Show the movie with live songs is just lazy.

Thankfully, it hasn't been cancelled; only postponed.
“We are postponing the Little Mermaid Live special. We love the idea of doing a live musical and want to make it wonderful. The project is so unique that we are making best efforts to do it next year and want to give it all the attention it deserves,” an ABC spokesperson said Thursday in a statement.

Funny, considering so many had suggested Latifah for Ursula in the live-action film.

So curious that they are going ahead with this when the live action movie is casting and heading closer to production. I’m all in for both productions, though!

I'm glad for Auli'i, but I'd prefer they gave her a role in a live-action film or a TV series.

I'm glad Latifah got the role since she was always my choice for a live-action film.

She had a starring role on a NBC TV show but it was a flop and got cancelled rather quickly. I'm surprised Disney hasn't found something more permanent for her on Freeform.

ABC Chief: ‘Little Mermaid’ Live Musical Will Be Disney Plus Launchpad
https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/litte- ... 92569/amp/
ABC is timing its first-ever live-musical event, “The Little Mermaid,” to air just a week before the debut of Disney Plus in order to drum up attention for the hotly anticipated streaming platform.
“We wanted to launch it in November, in time to coincide with the launch of Disney Plus,” ABC network president Karey Burke told Variety. “It felt like a great promotional platform to speak to that.
(some of the below quote was in Sotiris' article...but I'm so curious about the stage!!!!!)
The event will take place in a “dive-in theater” on the Disney lot. Early renderings of the stage show a long, winding set-piece that hundreds of viewers can approach, producer Hamish Hamilton showed Television Critics Assn. tour attendees on Monday. And there’s room for more such events, if “The Little Mermaid” plays to an enthusiastic audience.

Really thrilled that Mermaid is getting so much appreciation and attention this year. Hopefully I can find some way to watch this as I'm in the UK ! Interestingly, and I'm personally really glad, that they are acknowledging the musical as well
