Tron: Ares

Post by Sotiris »

I'd much prefer a 3rd Tron than a reboot.
The studio is in the very early stages of development for a new Tron movie, with Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto circling to star, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. No writer has been hired at this exploratory stage, and no filmmaker is involved. Justin Springer, who co-produced Tron: Legacy and exec produced the Tom Cruise sci-fi movie Oblivion, will produce. Leto and and his producing partner Emma Ludbrook would also be involved in some producing capacity if the project moves forward.

Sources say this new project is not a direct sequel and is being built out of the source code of the deleted Tron 3 script. Leto would play a character named Ares, who has not appeared on screen before but was a key player in that script. At this stage it's too early to tell if Kosinski or actors from Tron: Legacy will return.

I know I'm not a TRON fan in the first place, but I don't really get the point. I can't imagine a reboot bringing in the money they want if they chose not to make another sequel in the first place because of low sales.

I tend to agree. If Tron 3 isn't expected to do as well, why should a Tron reboot do better?

Personally, my guess is this is due to this crazy idea that seems to be in the minds of many a Hollywood producer these days that when your franchise runs out of stem with squeals, just reboot it and somehow that will make everything better. I also feel like there is a mentality that everything needs to be rebooted anyway to bring various IP's into the 21st Century, becuase somehow that also makes everything better. I'd say in the last so many years the results are at best mixed on these ideologies.

I understand that they don't feel the original movie from the 80s would work that well today when compared to the sequel and the third movie that was planned. The original and the sequel are two very different movies.
But the thing is; people don't care. The original movie is what it is.

If they make Tron 3 instead, we will get another sequel, no matter if it is a flop or a success. If a success, more additions to the universe could be made later.

If they go for a remake instead, and it flops, we will never get a sequel. And personally prefer a new story instead of the same story told before in a different way. I would still see it, but not everybody is like me. And a sequel that takes place in our own world would be even further away. Also, I want to see Olivia Wilde again.

I was excited because in the span of the same week, the original plot of Tron 3 was revealed, then then that led to rumblings Disney was going to go forward with Tron 3, only for it to turn into this news about a reboot or spin-off.

I am not excited about resetting Tron, and/or not finishing the story of Sam, Kevin, Clu, Quoarra, Alan...

Finish that, and they can do whatever they want with the Tron series afterwards.

But a story had been begun, and despite 28 years in-between, they continued it, so they still can complete it even after another long gap in time between releases.

To head in a new direction with new characters, especially with Jared Leto in a starring role, does not interest me at all.

I did not hold out hope Tron: Uprising would ever be continued, despite it being awesome in my opinion, but I still thought perhaps after some of the Marvel/LucasFilm excitement began to settle down a little and some fatigue set in, Tron could be resurrected to provide some fresh energy/an alternative to Superheroes and Star Wars, and the trilogy finally completed.

It's just cruel that on February 28, 2017 during a Q&A session with director Joseph Kosinski, he revealed that Tron 3 had not been scrapped, instead saying it was in "cryogenic freeze". But then a few days later, it was announced that Disney is looking into rebooting the franchise with Jared Leto attached to portray a new character named Ares, who originated from the Tron 3 script.

I don't want a spinoff film with Ares... I want the original Tron 3!

Rumor: Will The TRON Roller Coaster Be Coming To Disneyland/Disney World
http://www.slashfilm.com/tron-roller-co ... ld-rumors/
...Last month it was revealed that a Tron reboot was in development with Jered Leto circling the project. Some people are speculating that the development of that movie may have influenced the decision to bring the ride stateside, but Disney is usually very cautious about bringing rides to their parks based on films yet to be released, nevermind greenlit...I’ve actually been hearing the complete opposite: The Tron roller coaster at Shanghai Disneyland is insanely popular and that the ride’s popularity has resulted in Walt Disney Pictures exploring new films set in the Tron world...

Oh, goodness, yes. If any good can come of this reboot or threequel, let it be the stateside debut of TRON Lightcycle Power Run (tear down Tomorrowland Indy Speedway and put it there!). Especially as we'll likely not see Battle for the Sunken Treasure coming here unless they decide to overhaul Pirates completely from the ground up. But I can see them using the same ride technology for another franchise, possibly to build in DHS.

Q: One of my favorite films when I was growing up is Tron and I’m curious if you had the same reaction to that film when you were younger, and because there’s rumors that you might be in a future Tron movie and I’m just curious if that’s accurate.

Jared Leto: Totally. It was a huge movie for me as well and I do think there’s so much potential in that world, there so much left to be said. I’m absolutely game to try to help in any way that I can bring that to life.

Q: Is that something that’s in active development for you?

Jared Leto: It’s something that we’re in discussions about and very much looking forward to bringing to reality. It’s very early days though.

Q: No I completely get it but I really hope that’s something that comes together for you because I would love to see more in the world of Tron.

Jared Leto: Yeah, me too. I’m right there and right next to you. It’s one of my favorites.

A new Lego Tron: Legacy set is coming out:

https://io9.gizmodo.com/start-saving-yo ... 1823959549

I'm kind of flabbergasted because only super-popular franchises get Lego treatments, not something that was -- by Disney's account -- a flop, and especially an 8-year-old flop. Do you think this could indicate that the sequel is back on track?

The Disney XD show was a flop too I think so I'm surprised by this as well. Maybe they are going ahead with the reboot or sequel.

Disney's President of Music & Soundtracks Mitchell Leib has said that they have a great script ready for ‘TRON 3’ however...“the right and first thing to do is to bring Daft Punk back.”

After taking its time figuring out where it wants the next Tron installment to go, Disney’s sci-fi franchise looks to have new life as we are hearing Garth Davis has been tapped to direct the pic starring Jared Leto. Davis has been better known for his smaller art house films over the years like 2018’s Mary Magdalene and his critically acclaimed 2016 drama Lion, which received six Oscar nominations including for Best Picture. Tron would mark Davis’ first tentpole, and though he is not known for big-budget projects, insiders say Davis aggressively pursued the job, eventually winning over execs.

Jesse Wigutow wrote the most recent draft of the script. Leto is producing along with Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook. Davis coming on to the project signals the next installment may finally happen, but insiders still stress a greenlight has not been given. The film is still in development but Davis’ involvement is a push in the right direction for the future of the franchise.

The new film, however, will not be a direct sequel to 2010’s “Tron: Legacy” and 1982’s “Tron,” but chart its own path as a new installment in the franchise.

Leto, as stars of big Disney franchise blockbusters often do, took to Twitter to express his gratitude and excitement over the role. And in doing so… he just might’ve accidentally leaked the official title of Tron 3. In a Tweet that’s since been deleted, Leto didn’t just say “TRON.” He said, straight up, “TRON: ARES.”
Source: https://collider.com/tron-3-title-tron-ares/
Jared Leto deleted the tweet mentioning the title ‘TRON: ARES’ and replaced it with just ‘TRON’. But we were able to get a screenshot.

According to insider Daniel Richtman, Disney is interested in Mulan‘s Liu Yifei for a lead role. Richtman revealed a casting breakdown for the film, which not only confirmed the film is titled Tron: Ares but also that the studio is interested in Yifei for a lead role.

Jared Leto wrote:I’m struck with such gratitude for the opportunity to bring this movie to life, especially as both the original video game and the film affected me so deeply as a young child. The fact that I get to be a part of this new chapter is mind-blowing. I am so very excited and proud to confirm that YES - I will be starring in TRON. We will work as hard as we possibly can to create something that I hope you all will love. We have some very special ideas in store for you all...

Jared Leto wrote:I'm a super fan of Tron, and we are working hard on Tron with our incredible partners at Disney. Just an amazing group of creative people. We're getting closer. We're getting closer and closer, and who knows? Something may be [coming] sooner than later.

Disney is moving forward on their third entry in Tron franchise tentatively titled Tron: Ares. While filming is expected to start until next summer, the studio is already putting together an amazing team to once again bring the world of Tron back to life. Production designer Patrice Vermette has been tasked with that job whose work will next been seen in Warner Bros’ highly-anticipated sci-fi epic Dune.

News on “Tron 3,” tentatively entitled TRON: Ares, has been quiet as of late; however, The DisInsider gathered some information that leads us to believe that the film could be gearing up to start production in early 2022. The original TRON film and its sequel, TRON: Legacy, used Flynn’s Arcade (with the iconic neon sign in Culver City, California, known as “The Hull Building”) as its backdrop. After filming on the sequel, most recently, the building housed a garage door company called A1 Garage Doors & Gates. Well, thanks to recent photos we’ve obtained, the Flynn’s Arcade awning and facade have returned. Now, with a new, modern look. While we can’t yet point to an official production start, the new look of Flynn’s Arcade is a sign that work on the film could start sooner rather than later.

I am so glad this is finally starting to pick up some steam. It can still get canned, but I'm just relieved for any kind of movement. I really like Legacy, and would really love if that style took more of a hold over Tomorrowland in the parks in general.

I don't have much affection for the original so if this did turn out to become a reboot, I'm ok overall. I would still really enjoy this as a sequel too. I think it's a unique idea with a really neat design that can support a new franchise vastly different than others in its field. Disney has a great opportunity here that I hope they don't continue to sleep on.
