They've been going on for 15 years too long but yeah, I don't see how they can carry on at this point unless they replace him. To write out his characters would leave a gaping wide hole in the show.

I've recently re-watched some episodes from series 1-10 and I had honestly forget how good this show used to be. From the more recent episodes I've caught, it is a shadow of its former self.

I wish him well and I can understand wanting to leave a job after 25 years to pursue other things. He is 71, he's obviously made good money from it so at least he doesn't have that to worry about.

I have always wondered why people were still watching this show. "The Simpsons" have been worn out their welcome in our house about 15 years ago. Don't understand why all the popularity still exists. They characters haven't aged, and the animation still sucks!

They should just cancel the show on its 30th anniversary and put some real television on in its place. Just my opinion now.

That's your opinion and my opinion is the show is still great. The Every Simpsons Ever marathon made me realize that.

Also an update (hope for a last minute miracle!):

At this point, The Simpsons has done everything that it could do. A recent episode indicates that they've taken into consideration the stigma behind a second movie, so all they really have to look forward to is its 600th episode, and possibly its 30th year. The latter would put them in the running of surpassing Gunsmoke's episode total.

Quality aside, one long-time concern many Simpsons fans have had is the series having to deal with the inevitable mortality of the cast and crew members. Luckily for them, Sam Simon had left the show many years before. But characters such as Troy McClure and more recently Edna Krabappel were retired, exactly because their respective voice actors passed away. That solution would not be quite as easy if it were one of the six main players.

I love The Simpsons, but it really doesn't need to continue. As sad as it is to see Harry Shearer go, hopefully this will be the right signal to end it.

"The Simpsons" is sticking around for at least 2 more seasons, for better or worse.

Losing Shearer would be a huge loss. And he voices one of my favorite characters on the show, Mr. Burns. The show may be called The Simpsons, but I find it to be a show about the people of Springfield, and not just limited to the Simpsons family.

I still watch the show out of habit, but usually, the worthwhile parts of the recent episodes have been the couch gags. It does seem like a lot more gets put into the couch gags than the actual episodes themselves.

I heard on my local FOX station that Homer is going to fall in love with his pharmacist and run off leaving Marge alone.
