Samuel Goldwyn Jr., the son of a fiercely independent-minded Hollywood mogul and the producer of many independent films in his own right including “Mystic Pizza” and studio hits including “Master and Commander,” died Friday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 88. His son John Goldwyn told the New York Times he died of congestive heart failure.

Goldwyn Jr. received his final credit as a producer, together with son John and others, on Fox’s long-gestating remake of the Goldwyn Sr.-produced classic “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” starring and directed by Ben Stiller and released in December 2013.

His version of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" is far and away such a better movie than that current film starring Ben Stiller. Danny Kaye was a better actor and that movie will remain a favorite of mine, as the other one faded from memory less than an hour after I saw it in the theater.

Mystic Pizza and Once Bitten were two 'out of character' films for Sam Jr. Both were career makers for their stars, and both very entertaining in different ways.

R.I.P.: Sam Goldwyn Jr.

Actually Samuel Goldwyn Jr was one of the producers of the Ben Stiller version of Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Which I found enjoyable, nice modern take on the story but I don't want to get into that with you dvdjunkie. He had no tie ins with the original his father was the producer of that . . .

I voted none. I liked his dad's pictures more.
