Halloween Viewing Log 2014!

"I want to play a game."

It's that time of year again! It's Sept 19 so I thought I'd get this thread going again on the 19th like the last couple years. I almost thought fall & Halloween bypassed us here in Calgary as we had our first couple days of snow last week. Almost thought I'd have to get the Christmas thread going first. But we're back to summer temperatures in the +20 deg Cels range. Typical Calgary weather.

You know the drill; report what Halloween/horror movies you watch in the run-up to Halloween.
Last year's thread is here.

I got some more time on my hands this year to watch as I find myself unemployed again. Last year was pitiful for me. A few years ago I think I got over 60 titles. Added a few Scream Factory titles to my Blu-Ray collection so I'm looking forward to watching those. Picked-up the first edition of Scream's Lifeforce which is sold-out now. Looking forward to watching that one.

Conveniently, Halloween falls on a Friday this year. I'm sure there's going to be lots of hooliganism out there this year.

Gonna start watching tonight after I get some chores done.

I often start my Halloween viewing around the 1st but have only watched one thing so far this year... The world premiere of Kevin Smith's Tusk. It's a straaaaaange little picture but needs to be seen to be believed. It's funny, gross, creepy and way over the top but super fun. Before the film we were given a Walrus mask and Kev made us all wear them so he could tweet the sea of walruses. :P After I got a free poster which the good Mr. Smith and Haley Joel Osment signed. In many places the film opens today so get a bunch of friends together and see the most messed up fun fest of the year. :)

1. Planet Terror

Ok, I actually watched both Grindhouse movies, but Planet Terror felt more horror-ish so it started my Halloween viewing. Not bad. I've had the Blu-Ray sitting on my shelf for ages and finally got around to watching it.

I've been stocking up for this year. I just purchased Halloweentown/Halloweentown II last night at Target. So far I've only watched:

Another set I've had sitting on my shelf that I haven't got around to watching. I've seen part of the first one before, but it was on a night I was super tired and fell asleep halfway thru. Stayed awake this time. Good movie. Gonna watch the next one tomorrow.

I've never seen the Underworld films. I know there's quite a few and they mostly are well liked but that's about it. Should I give them a watch?

Side note: At the start of the month I met and took a selfie with Bill Nighy. Lovely man. Very nice, very gracious.

As for my Halloween watching I have been working so much that I really have not had much time but I have started watching the Abbot & Costello film 'Hold That Ghost' which I need to finish at some point. On the TV and internet front there's been a tad more movement from me.

TV shows/Specials/Shorts
1. The Dick Van Dyke Show - The Ghost of A Chantz (1964)
2. The Dick Van Dyke Show - It May Look Like A Walnut! (1963)
3. QI- Death (2006)
4. The Dick Van Dyke Show The Cat Burglar (1963)
5. The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet: Halloween Party (1952)
6. My Three Sons: The Ghost Next Door (1962)
7. Community: "Introduction to Statistics" (2009)
8. Community: "Epidemiology" (2010)

Internet shows/Music Videos:
1. Longbox of the Damned 2014 Promo
2. 80's Dan: "C.H.U.D. II: Bud the Chud"
3. DVD-R Hell: "Pagan Invasion: Halloween, Trick or Treat?" (Part 1)
4. DVD-R Hell: "Pagan Invasion: Halloween, Trick or Treat?" (Part 2)
5. 80’s Dan: “Halloween III: Season of The Witch”
6. Longbox of the Damned: Teen Titans Annual #1
7. Linkara’s Top 15 Night Gallery Segments

Give them a try. This is the first time I'm watching them and they are pretty good. 4 all together, but I read that they may be making a 5th. I like the time setting of Rise of the Lycans. Woukld be cool to see another prequel.

Bill Nighy is great. Loved him in Love Actually and of course as Davy Jones in a certain pirates series.

Another good sequel, er make that a prequel.

Another good sequel, and the end is left for another one, which I heard may be going into production soon.

Another one I haven't seen until now. Was on my watch list last year but I couldn't fit it in. Good one. Liked it.

Missed it in the theater. First time viewing. Pretty good. Much better than the 1998 version. I liked the opening homage to Jurassic Park with the helicopter approach.

Watched the Anthony Hopkins Hannibal Lecter trilogy. Haven't seen Hannibal and Red Dragon since their theatrical releases and Silence of the Lambs since before then. I still haven't seen the prequel Hannibal Rising or the TV show. I enjoyed Hannibal on this second viewing more than the first time I saw it, but I still find that final scene hokey. As gross as it is, it's still kinda hokey.

I like to pull this one out every few years. Creeped me out when I was a kid, and it still is creepy. Shame Disney hasn't put it out on Blu-Ray yet. Great movie to watch during the month of October.

What can I say, the Gute's gotta eat! Another one I've had sitting on my shelf for a few years that I haven't gotten around to watching yet. I got it as part of that four-movie DVD set where the movies are based on the Disney park attractions. Tower of Terror could be a fun ghost movie, but ended up being boring. The first theme park attraction-turned-movie which was followed up with Haunted Mansion, Country Bears, Mission to Mars, and the successful Pirates franchise (whatever happened to the proposed Jungle Cruise and Thunder Mountain movies?) Utilizing the ghosts-stuck-in-limbo story line that was later adopted to the also weak, but visually pleasing Haunted Mansion, this one could've really shined if they kept the Twilight Zone brand in. I guess Rod Serling's ghost was also stuck in limbo during the filming (interesting that with a bit of Disney magic, they brought him back for the ride).

Not a bad prequel. I thought it was better than what critics made it out to be. My only gripe was the lead actor - didn't look anything like Anthony Hopkins.

The Sequel of Disney, again, doesn't respect the thread. This is supposed to be Halloween movies, not just movies you have seen in the cinema.

Not an attack, but a personal observation. You should have listed those two movies under "What was the last movie you watched" thread. It would truly fit there.

Stop. Junkie, just stop. Murder thrillers can be considered Halloween-y if they want them to. I know I personally think that murder can indeed be frightening. As for the part about 'not being an attack' it surely reads like one or at least as an insult by you saying that he 'doesn't respect the thread'.

Halloween means a variety of things to me. Fear can come from anything, and fear is Halloween for me. I personally found elements of I Confess and Gone Girl to be fear-inducing, so I'm putting them here. Just because those films aren't "typical" Halloween films doesn't mean that they aren't Halloween-esque. I don't find my post disrespectful at all, junkie.

And, thanks Skyler, because I (obviously) completely agree with you.
