So even though this movie is not due for another year, we have our first trailer:

Plot summary:
When Earth is taken over by the overly-confident Boov, an alien race in search of a new place to call home, all humans are promptly relocated, while all Boov get busy reorganizing the planet. But when one resourceful girl, Tip (Rihanna), manages to avoid capture, she finds herself the accidental accomplice of a banished Boov named Oh (Jim Parsons). The two fugitives realize there's a lot more at stake than intergalactic relations as they embark on the road trip of a lifetime.

I never thought that Jim Parsons and Rhianna would work as a comedic duo...

...and judging by that trailer, I still don't think that it will ever work.

I don't know. Aside from the mismatched casting decisions, it seems pretty generic and predictable. The designs of the aliens made me instantly think of Minions. Still, I mostly just watched the trailer wondering how old Rhianna's character is supposed to be. She looks 12, but sounds and acts like she's in her 20s or at least late teens. :|

I'm going to guess she's in her late teens, since she appears to have her own car and driving license.

Anyway, I think this movie looks pretty adorable. Then again, there's something about movies with aliens that just seems to appeal to me.

So how old is this girl? It's rather confusing.

I saw the trailer for this at my screening of HTTYD2 last night. From a visual standpoint, this actually looks pretty great. The design of the girl looked horrid in some of those early pics, but she actually looked pretty good in the trailer. The voices, however, I'm pretty iffy about.... It just sounded like Rihanna and Sheldon to me...

That's what I like least about Dreamworks movies (and other companies that take a similar route), when they hire the biggest names in the biz to voice their characters but they don't necessarily fit the role/character. That's what I feel Disney do well with their casting and even if they do use a big name, like Robin Williams, at least he fit the larger than life character of the genie; I really couldn't imagine anyone else playing the role.

I don't know, because I've never really felt such a mismatch until now (though I haven't seen all of their movies).

Movies like Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and MegaMind all pretty heavily advertised their celebrity voice cast, and while I'm not a fan of that kind of advertising, I felt like the voices worked quite well with the characters. Then there are the movies like The Croods, where they didn't advertise the casting at all, yet they still used a lot of celebrities but the voices worked perfectly fine as well. Whereas here, it's like I'm seeing the actual celebrities' faces when I hear these characters speak.

It's not the celebrity casting that annoys me...it's when they cast celebrities with generic voices that annoys me. In other words, if there's a voice actor that can bring so much energy or emotion to the role, it obviously annoys me when they cast celebrities who aren't special.

Yeah, it makes sense when a movie director says something like, "I imagine that this alien character's personality would be awkward and ignorant towards mostly everything...like Sheldon Cooper" and they actually typecast Jim Parsons as the alien because he plays that role so well.

On the other hand, you have Rhianna, who you don't even notice until someone tells you outright "hey that chick is voiced by Rhianna". You wouldn't know otherwise. That pisses me off. I'm sure that there are many black voice actresses who would kill for a starring role in a Dreamworks movie (or just a big-budget animated movie period), and would probably bring so much more to the role.

I think this basically sums up Rihanna's role in the music business as well.

Talking about a film with celebrity voice casts with generic voices...Check out the Lorax. Zac Efron and Taylor Swift were fuckin' terrible in that movie.

Boy, I can't think of any pop singers being casted in animated working really well. The casting of Rihanna is sounding like the casting of Katy Perry, which itself, was enough reason for me not to bother watching either of the Smurfs movies.

This is sounding like "Shark Tale" all over again, and if it came on TV, turning it off is more worth it than using it as background noise.

I'll withhold judgement, but after the casts of HttYD and RotG, they go with this!?
