Wizzer, let me just say that I feel ya'. I always look forward to yours posts, and the posts of very few others, that are always informative, and educational. I apologize for never really having any feedback on your posts, but believe me, they typically send me out to do some research of my own.

It really does seem that we have quite a few posters here that care nothing for Disney features or Shorts as art, but only appreciate them for the pretty colors and sounds. I've found that it generally has a lot to do with age, which is forgivable, but you'd think more folks would want to educate themselves.

Keep posting your fantastic information, and please know that it's appreciated.

By the way, one of the reasons I post so little on this board is because of the lack of intelligent or insightful responses.

Though I do wish instead of 'dumbing it down', we'd seek to smarten it up. There's plenty of intelligent conversations here, and you can be sure that even if people aren't responding to the Ub Iwerks and AnimaLand threads, they're reading them!

As for Bongo, I sometimes feel as though I am the only person on the planet who digs this little urchin. The much maligned follow-up to Dumbo (I believe it was originally intended as a feature film!), I think the 'Bongo' segment of the Fun and Fancy Free package is a fogotten classic. Leonard Maltin refers to it as "an innocuous but unaccountably weak feature" (Maltin, 2000, p. 81)*. I couldn't disagree more. Maltin further goes on to say that the animation is the style of the shorts, and that the "rambling and easygoing" nature of the film makes it impossible to become involved with the characters.

I see these as the charms of the film, not drawbacks. I mean, you have to remember the US was just coming out of a war, and it was only natural that the short style that had served them so well in the past would be a nice way of easing back into feature animaion (3 short years later, we had Cinderella, and many would agree THAT is a classic). Further, the "rambling" nature is quite charming, because the character is not only trying to find his own way in the world, but he is falling in love.

In the end, I'm just a sucker for a nice love story between animals.

And Wizzer is right - he is SOOOOO cute on the unicycle

I like Bongo . . . I like it. It's too long for its own good, even as a 20 minute short. It would've been better as an 8-minute one. The content is stretched terribly thin with that sequence where the two lover bears are floating through the sky.

Did anyone realize that the aforementioned sequence is very similar to the one cut from Snow White, where Snow & the Prince go galavanting through the clouds? And Walt cut that sequence because he felt the story would be tighter without it. For the same reason, the sky segment should have been cut from Bongo.

Well, I never actually watched all the way through, I kind of found it a bit boring, you know. So, before I can judge it, I should watch the entire thing...

My opinion on the level of worthwhile response on this board is just that, my opinion. It was a generalization of what I've experienced here, especially in the last few months.

I hear ya, Barbosa - I joined the forum on its first live day, yet only have 230ish posts to my name. I mostly lurk, and pick and choose the threads that I read. If I feel compelled enough, I'll respond. But since I'm a (relatively) slow typer, and I backtrack constantly to fix spelling and punctuation (extremely anal, here!), I tend to not post a lot. That, plus I want my reply to count - so it tends to get long-winded and full of paragraphs.

The forum's being overrun by kiddies, I tell ya! RUN!! Run for the hills! O_O

I didn't take it personally! Although you did mention a lack of intelligence, and I don't think anyone would disagree that I lack the most intelligence of the the intelligence lacking people on the intelligence lacking board.

However, I did think it was an unfair generalization. And all generalizations are bad.

You seemed to have taken this far more personally than I, for I am "Fun and Fancy Free" when it comes to this part of the board (unless you get me in a religious debate, then I really get warmed up). As a matter of fact, I agree with you - there have been far too many "frivolous" posts of the "Yeah, I like it too" variety. But perhaps a little more tact is required when pointing this out to people.

But if taking it personally still "pains you", I suggest you take two aspirin and see me in the morning. If pain persists, please consult a doctor or a man in a bee costume claiming to be (bee?) a doctor.

How about Half-a-Bee and we call it even?

o.k. i'm done feeling sorry for myself i guess. the problem is that i'm a regular visitor at a horror forum and while horror forums are great, the members start loosing intrest when i'm rattleing off about snow white or speedy gonzalez. so then i found this forum where theres alot of disney fans and i see it as a better forum to post about non-disney animation in the off-topic area. to my dismay, noone here is all that interested either but it's ok, i'll keep trying. i just get a little discouraged when my threads go nowhere and that who's cutest thread has multiple pages of replies. i'm the kind of person that if i really like a dvd and suggest it, it means i really want someone to enjoy it and feel the way i did when i got done watching it. so when others seem to ignore my advice, it's almost like someone's punching me in the face and saying "up yours with you and your old timey cartoons!" well, i guess it's not really like that but sort of so anyway, i'll just pretend that every member is going out and getting all the dvds i start threads about and loving them so much, they forget to post about it

also, bongo IS excellent.

Bongo is a symbol of freedom and peace that will last the ages, even if Disney doesn't. There was a dream of a care-free idyllic setting with bears once. The Care Bears made a decent fist of it in the 1980s, but like all things from the 1980s faded into obscurity...

...but 2003/2004 have seen a revival of all things 80s. Care Bears are back in the store. Disney realizes the importance of the bear. Brother Bear was the result of that. Disney is scared of releasing Song of the South NOT because of the racial overtones, but because of Brer Bear, who may have such a profound influence on people all over America (indeed, the world!) that they will have not choice but to "be like the bear". In that case, it would mean being stupid, losing one's temper and beating people up a lot. Wouldn't make a huge difference to some, but for society and large it could mean disaster.

Mock Bongo if you will, but always respect him. For at the foundation of EVERY successful society, there is a bear who loves.
