Thinking About Re-Purchasing VHS Tapes

To date, I only have a couple of Disney VHS tapes left over. A few years ago, my parents sold almost all of my VHS tapes to Half-Price Books. Since then, I've bought some Disney DVDs, but they don't hold the same nostalgic value to me as the VHS tapes would. I miss the opening previews and the original colors of the movies.

That's why I've been considering re-purchasing the VHS tapes. If I were to do that, I don't know what I'd do with the DVDs I currently have, though, because I have a feeling that I'd start to prefer one medium over the other.

Does anybody have both VHS tapes and DVDs? Which do you prefer? If you were in my situation, would you entertain the thought of buying back the VHS tapes?

I thought about collecting VHS copies of the classics, especially the black diamond releases. Those releases had beautiful artwork and the preview trailers on the VHS copies are priceless!

These VHS copies also bring back such fond memories of my childhood and a wonderful nostalgic feeling.

I also got rid of all my Disney VHS tapes. I did successfully argue to keep all the artwork. The only tape I kept was Snow White 1994 release.
My parents recently got a VHS/DVD player and I've been trying to track some of them down. Managed to get Aladdin, Cinderella, Muppet's Christmas Carol and Song of the South Tape. They are becoming increasingly difficult to get hold off. The only want I really want now is Beauty and The Beast. Maybe Little Mermaid for the EuroDisney Preview at the end.
I don't want to buy all the films on VHS as I have the DVDs. DVD's are smaller and do have a better picture quality than VHS. I'm just getting the ones where the restoration has been done badly or they are my favourites.

I would personally carry on collecting the DVDs and only get your real favs on VHS as back up. A few won't take up that much room.

A lot of the previews and VHS openings are on YouTube. They are very nostalgic. Doesn't make much sense as I'm sure I used to fast forward them when I was younger but I remember them all. There was so much excitement at the start of a VHS. I still love VHS. I didn't fully swap to DVD for ages. The smell of the tapes is wonderful. But my advice would still be to embrace DVD.

I have most of the classics on VHS, some of the PE DVDs and 10 Blu rays.

I totally see what you're saying and that's why I'll always be holding on to my VHS collection. The visual experience may be inferior in comparison to HD media but it holds a special place in my heart.

I have one rule, though. If I watch a VHS, it's only with a CRT TV, because VHS looks ugly on plasmas.

So once in a while I'll hook up the VCR and watch something, and it's fun to see the old colors and even the fuzzy quality is nice for nostalgic reasons, but seeing it makes me appreciate newer technology and especially Blu ray even more. It just took the movies visually to a whole new level.

I actually have several!!! of the Disney films on VHS, that I am wanting to get rid of...love them...but, they are taking up valuable space, and I have repurchased many of them on dvd/bluray. If anyone is interested, I am willing to sell them in bulk for a pretty reasonable price, if anyone is interested, I will take inventory of what I have and make a list.

I've considered doing the same thing myself, as I still have a couple good-working VCRs, and hate the idea of throwing them away just because of the whole "keeping up with the jones" thing.

At times, I find myself preferring VHS only because if there was a slight scratch on the tape, it was still watchable and playable, even if it looked fuzzy. And I could tolerate it. But a scratch on a DVD, and forget it, it will either freeze or skip, and just drives me mad.

I re ought them all. The nice thing is they were all super cheap at Half Price Books $.25 to $.50 ea.

I watch them when I am working out in my basement. It helps to pass the time.

I don't have kids yet, but I've had the thought of, if I have kids and they watch my Disney DVDs, what if they get scratched?! So maybe someday I'll repurchase the VHS tapes. They're so cheap, too- a movie can be in the Disney Vault, and you can buy the VHS, and really not have to worry about buying a bootleg!

I have nearly all the Disney films on VHS from when my parents bought them when my sister and I were young. I still buy TLM whenever I see a VHS copy of it though. :P I've always felt VHS gives the films a "classic, timeless" quality that DVD and Blu-Ray often erase by having so much clarity in the images. Plus, some films (like Cinderella and B&tB), I like to view on VHS just to return to the colors/amount of darkness I grew up with because they are more appealing to me than what Disney currently views as official.

I have most of the films on DVD, too, but since Blu-Ray came in the picture, I have been very discriminating with what Disney releases I buy now. Unless the restoration is gorgeous or there are worthwhile bonus features included (or if the movie in question is TLM...), I'm not buying. And even when I do, I usually wait until it's been out for a while so the price has come down.

Kids are a good point. I don't even like other adults touching my Disney DVDs. They are irreplaceable.
I would like my children to know what a VHS was.
I got my old TV/VHS combo out the loft. Going to watch Cinderella and create a VHS openings playlist on YouTube.

I was just watching "Tangled" on DVD (which I borrowed from the library), and it skipped twice, after dealing with some freezing and fuzziness beforehand. Even though I have seen the film multiple times already, it never stops being annoying at all. One of those skips included the entire scene when the Stabbington Brothers meet Mother Gothel for the first time. Now imagine if watching the film the first time, and you miss that entire part, it may get confusing later on.

I've thought about buying VHS for titles that won't ever come to DVD and burning them onto a disc for myself.

I have to ask because I've been trying for ages and no luck.
How do you bypass the macrovision? I just want these for my own personal use and as backup. I don't plan to distribute to anyone.
Has anyone put a Disney VHS to DVD and if so, how?
