So....I was talking to a friend the other day about the current music scene, and we ended up discussing the Vocal-Pop genre. There was a time, whenever, MOD/Adult Contemporary/Easy Listening, was a valid genre. However, it seems as though nowadays, the only performer there is for that particular format is Michael Buble.......maybe Harry Connick Jr. as well........but, there are not nearly as many performers of this music as there were 40 years ago. Where are the Perry Como's, Andy William's, Shirley Bassey, Vikki Carr of today?

I was just listening to Sarah Vaughan's Broken Hearted Melody (1959) today......2 minutes of pure bliss. Vocal pop is gone forever!

My opinion is that most young people wouldn't know good music if they heard it. What with all this 'rap crap' and hip hop around. People don't have to be able to carry a tune, and then there is that punk Justin Bieber, what a joke he is to the industry.

There is some very good Pop artists out there, but they aren't getting played on the radio like they used to because of the trend towards the hip hop and Rap culture, which I have never understood and agree with Rush Limbaugh on his definition of "Rap": "it is crappy poetry set down to an even worse drum solo"!! Sure it is a little extreme, but they way most rappers sample music from other artists to get their melodies is something that I don't understand.

Not that I am a prude about this, because I like Kid Rock and Ne-Oh, two just name two acts that I have seen in person and didin't feel that I wasted my time and money.

What really bugs me about rap crap is their constant use of foul language, references to killing, raping, maiming and all sorts of vicious acts towards other men, women, children, police, and such.

I don't think Pop Vocals are gone forever, you just have to search your local music store to find them.

I am a huge fan of the older singers, old standards etc. I was listening to some Eydie Gorme music not to long ago and a friend of mine who loves the recent stuff Lady GaGa, Britney Spears, Beyonce etc. Said she is amazing who is that, so I told him a bit more about her. Have had the same with him about other artists like Dolores Hope for example Bob Hope's widow who did quite a few CDs in the 90s. He even likes Polly Bergen who is one of my all time favorites. Frequently they just haven't been introduced to it, so if they hear it not knowing who it is frequently they will ask about it.

Eydie Gorme's What Did I Have (I Don't Have Now) is a freakin' tour de force. Every current singer should give it a listen to see how it's done!
