Is Disney ditching 3D Blu-ray?

I noticed that some recent Disney films who received a 3D release in theaters are not getting a 3D release on home video. Specifically, Frozen will only be released as a Blu-ray/DVD/DC combo and as a single DVD.

The same goes for The Pirate Fairy which will be released theatrically in 3D overseas. The previous Fairies installment, Secret of the Wings, which also received a theatrical release in 3D overseas, did get a 3D Blu-ray in North America.

Do you think these are isolated incidents or is Disney starting to phase out 3D Blu-ray in North America?

They might be stepping off a bit but I doubt they'll ditch it completely. I think for frozen its just a temporary exclusive, a few months later there will probably pop up in in other places. I think they're just adjusting to the demand. DVDs are cheaper to produce and the average soccer mom that just uses these as babysitters doesn't care about 3D so those are going to sell more.

With so many moving to streaming services though I'm surprised they haven't switched to just 3D blu ray. No dvd, no digital copy, just 3D blu ray, which isn't technically a new format, its just a blu ray. There should be enough space for both 2D and 3D on the same disc.

So perhaps this is a sign they are abandoning 3D Releases

However I did order it on the 3D Combo Pack first from The Disney Movie Club and the name of the item is listed as this

bd-frozen 3d superset

Very perplexing

I wouldn't be surprised if this phases out completely in a couple years. They pretty much acted like Mermaid's 3D release didn't exist either. Even in theaters, more and more audiences are choosing regular 2D over 3D screens due to prices being cheaper and the novelty wearing thinner.

I think Disney is being typical Disney here, and realizing this isn't going to grow much bigger than a niche market for home video buyers. And we all know if it doesn't appeal to the masses, it doesn't appeal to Disney.

I don't think 3D will completely go away, but I have noticed its popularity fading. At my local theaters last year the majority of new releases had more 3D screens than 2D. Lately its the opposite, and very common to only have 1 screen dedicated to a 3D showing (with multiple for 2D) when a new movie is released.

DeepDiscount has the 3D bundle still up. The only difference is that the bundle doesn't include the Soundtrack any more. Seems that that version will be Walmart's exclusive. I don't think they are phasing it out, they are just not promoting it like they used to (remember the hell we went through with TLM?).

I've read somewhere that 3D television didn't really catch on as well as Hollywood was hoping, so it makes sense that Disney's bailing from 3D Blu-Ray.

It will catch on when you can have 3D without the glasses. It's one thing to use them in a theater once in a while but no one wants to do that all the time. At some point we will have 3D without the glasses, I'm sure.

3D is certainly not noticeably getting leas popular in my local theatres, unless you count the ultrascreen being 2d exclusive now.

3D blu-ray has lasted 3 years with little competition in the 3D market. It certainly will not go away.

Since "Frozen" 3D will be an exclusive to Walmart, I wonder if "The Pirate Fairy" 3D will be exclusive to another store. Tinker Bell in 3D is awesome, I seriously hope they don't ditch the Tink films in 3D.

The only other Disney animated classic I'd LOVE to see in 3D is "Aladdin".

As far as Pixar goes, I still want "A Bug's Life", "The Incredibles", "Ratatouille", and "WALL-E" in 3D----especially "A Bug's Life"!

I think that Disney 3D Blu-ray is still going strong in sales and it won't leave anytime soon.

Disney is ditching lenticular 3D slips, but not the actual discs.

Walmart could be 2 things, either an early VUDU release exclusive, or the soundtrack.
I expect that we should get confirmation within the next 2 weeks. :)

Well..
Walmart just posted 2 exclusives.
Same as Monster University:
Regular Blu-Ray + Anna Infinity figure
or
Regular Blu-Ray + Elsa Infinity figure.

Hm.. Could they really get 3 exclusives for one movie? has it been done before?

What's with the lack of 3D?

I noticed that Disney hasn't released 3D Blu-Rays in North America lately.

First Frozen, then Maleficent, now Big Hero 6. Maleficent had a 3D release in Europe. What gives?

Very strange that the US of all places don't get 3D Blu-ray releases. Disney release all their 3D movies on 3D Blu-ray in Norway. So, what are their plan? To release them in 3D later? I would think that they would get more sales if the movies were released upon their original release, and not years later. Are people going to remember Maleficent in 3 years, and will people want to get the Maleficent 3D Blu-ray in 3 years?
