Disney Books

Post by Sotiris »

I've created this thread as a companion to the Disney Animation on Blu-ray one. I will be posting about upcoming books that have to do with Disney and Disney animation in particular. I won't be including story books or novels but mostly art books, animation history books, books about prominent figures at Disney etc. I won't be including books about the theme parks or Imagineering either. I will be listing these books chronologically by time of publication. This list only includes books which were published or will be published between 2013-2017. However, feel free to post and discuss about any Disney books of your liking.

I'm definitely picking up The Art and Flair of Mary Blair (since I missed out on it last time), and I might also pick up one of the Schultheis books, too.

I might get the Marc Davis: Walt Disney's Renaissance Man book and Once Upon a Dream: From Perrault's Sleeping Beauty to Disney's Maleficent.

By the way, what is up with that Arthurian Animation book?! I checked it out since I'm a fan of the Arthur mythology and Walt Disney's TSitS, but it's a 220 page paperback priced at $45? WTF??? I would like to get more art books, but even normally I just find them overpriced at $30 a hardback and not worth the money, since I usually only look at them once in a long while.

Disney will be releasing 7 Disney Princess storybooks featuring art that tries to look as close to the movies as possible, but with shading and lighting, and to be as beautiful as possible, too. They are all coming out on January 5, 2016, and will have 112 pages each. They are as follows:

Tangled: The Story of Rapunzel
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: The Story of Snow White
The Princess and The Frog: The Story of Tiana
The Little Mermaid: The Story of Ariel
Frozen: The Story of Anna and Elsa
Cinderella: The Story of Cinderella
Beauty and the Beast: The Story of Belle

I, for one, am excited. I love seeing my favorite movies, their art and stories, captured in books, no matter how many times.

I'm definitely getting The Disney Book for my birthday!

For the record, I think Jim Fanning wrote this.

Let's see then what Disney's definition of movie accurate is then when it comes to the color of Cinderella's hair and gown. I don't have high expectations tbh. Otherwise the concept of the books sound great! Still I wish Aurora and Jasmine had companion books as well (also Pocahontas and Mulan). I'd much prefer them over Tiana, Rapunzel, and Anna & Elsa, although I suppose it would be silly to think otherwise for the latter three considering how popular they are. Aurora and Jasmine are probably the least popular from their respective eras, hence why they occasionally get the shaft. :(

The Alice in Wonderland book looks interesting. :) I doubt it'll be as comprehensive as the Snow White or Pinocchio books, but I think it'll be interesting to say the least and certainly worthwhile. I'll be picking it up for one. Is the Silly Symphonies book still coming out though? I presume it'd be a reissue of the older book published a few years ago but that went out-of-print subsequently.

Cinderella: The Story of Cinderella
The subtitling here is just odd. Aren't they repeating themselves a bit? rotfl That said, the new title for the Tangled book is good. :) I know new large format books similar to the description you made have been released in the UK; I went into the children's section of a big bookshop recently and saw copies similar to what you described in terms of illustrations...

Has Glen Keane ever put a book out? He has to be a goldmine for info and instruction that would make for a nice thick book.

I found this image, since I was curious for the books and I couldn't find any source.

Excellent thread, Sotiris.

So we'll get another "making off"-book of "Aladdin"? Sweet :) I liked the former enough, but still.

So the Aladdin book is about the Broadway musical and not the movie... I had hoped that it would be about the animated film... But I guess we might get a book about the animated movie & the live action movie(s) when Disney release their Genie prequel movie (boring!) and then their live action Aladdin film (they better go all the way and actually make a proper Aladdin film!).

The villain book does look interesting, so does the book about Alice in Wonderland as well. Wonder if that one is about both the animated movie as well as the upcoming live action Alice film...
Favorite Disney-movies: Snow White, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan, Tarzan, Tangled, Frozen, Pirates, Enchanted, Prince of Persia, Tron, Oz The Great and Powerful

The Disney Princess "Story Of" books with art that looks a lot like the films look like this:

As you can see, the art looks very much like the films, but with extra shading and lighting, and it's beautiful. However, though Cinderella's hair color is right, here dress color for that scene isn't. Oh well. I figure maybe because it's dark outside it looks blue like the times it was dark and looked blue in the movie.

Alladin may be getting a book with such illustrations, because I've seen illustrations like it on the Disney Princess web site. Got to Jasmine's page and look for the "Discover" her story section and you'll find the illustrations. Aurora got her illustrations in a Big Golden Book, A Read-Along Book and CD, and a Step into Reading book. Check Amazon.com for those. And you can also find some of them on the Disney Princess site just like for Jasmine.

The new Aladdin book looks like it is just about the Broadway show and not the film. There was a book called Alladin: The Making of an Animated Film that was really good and in-depth about the animated film. But it's probably out of print. Check Amazon.com.

Well the cover art is the same promotional art used for the musical, and the subtitle basically confirms it, too: Behind the Scenes at Disney's Aladdin.

Fair enough. But I still hoped it was about the movie ;)
