Animator Hayao Miyazaki to retire from making feature films

Hayao Miyazaki, one of the world's most admired animators, is retiring. His latest project, "The Wind Rises," which has been playing in Japanese theaters since late July, will be his last feature film.

The announcement, which saddened many in the animation community, was made at a news conference at the Venice Film Festival on Sunday by Koju Hoshino, president of Miyazaki's production company, Studio Ghibli.

Hoshino declined to take questions, saying only that more details would be given next week at another news conference in Tokyo.

Miyazaki, 72, began turning heads with his work in anime for television in the 1970s, and he went on to make nearly a dozen renowned feature films, including "Princess Mononoke," "Howl's Moving Castle" and "Spirited Away," for which he won an Oscar.

"The Wind Rises," which takes a visually stunning look at the man responsible for designing Japan's World War II fighter planes, is currently screening in Venice and will be released in North America by Disney's Touchstone Pictures.

Also I know someone mentioned this in The Wind Rises thread, but I thought this might deserve it's own thread to talk about Miyazaki's greatest films, and where Studio Ghibli will go from here and such.

I'm sad about this. Always loved his movies. However *opinion * the quality in his movies has been falling since after Howls Moving Castle.

He's retired before (after Porco Rosso and Princess Mononoke, I believe), but it sounds like this will be his officially official retirement. He's made some amazing films, and it's very sad to seem him retire. Hopefully he'll still be at Studio Ghibli as an adviser or something.

I'm actually really sadden with this, because his films were amazing. Let's face it, his films were fun to watch while they last.

Truly a shame-

though tbh I much prefered his work in the 80s/90s/early 2000s to the late 2000s. Stuff like Ponyo or Arrietty aren't that groundbreaking imo.

Can't say I'm a fan, but I'm sad for folks that are. That said, I realize he's worked hard and he deserves to retire. Good for him.

I really ought to watch more of his films. Few animators - even Disney animators - have as much creativity when it comes to designs, characters and worlds as he does.

Is he really? I thought he couldn't stick out retirement. He was going to retire after Princess Mononoke, retire after Spirited Away, retire after Howl's Moving Castle but he always found his way back to the director's chair.

His films are awe-inspiring and thought-provoking. He reminds us animated films used to be an moving art with dignity and class.

Arrietty isn't a Miyazaki film.

BTW...

Anime News Network is reporting that Miyazaki's retirement press conference will stream via the niconico streaming service in both English and Japanese tomorrow morning at 1 AM EDT (2 PM JST). I'm sure they'll make it available for later viewing by non-night owls.

I agree. For the most part, I thought it was a good movie, but I did think it was a little dull, even for a film with a domestic scope.

Yeah, I'd read that. Personally, I hope he keeps going as long as he's able to. He's an animation treasure.
