Steamboat Willie Redux is a new hand-drawn short produced by Disney Consumer Products. It's basically a remake (if you can call it that) of the original short in various graphic styles by different artists. It will premiere at the D23 Expo on August 10, 2013. There's going to be an exhibit with artwork from the short as well.

Press Release wrote:Steamboat Willie Redux – Celebrate the history and timelessness of your favorite character from the pioneering 1928 cartoon short, Steamboat Willie. Using the original story and characters as a template, each scene has been graphically re-interpreted by Disney artists and designers in a phenomenally fun mash-up tribute to Mickey Mouse. [...] Disney Store will launch Steamboat Willie Redux, a fresh new take on Classic Mickey Mouse, and will host a guest artist signing on stage with Robert Farrell, John T. John T. Quinn III: I've been working on an exciting project. Steamboat Willie Redux. More to come.

Jeff Harter: What's it for?

John T. Quinn III: We're reanimating the short. Each scene to a different artist. I can't say too much yet but, I wanted to post the poster to alert other animation geeks like myself.

Ricardo De Los Angeles: Great poster John, so honored to be a part of this!

Tom Smolenski: Hey John! Tom Smolenski [smo!] here! Just wanted to see if any info was out there or if we could talk about this and found your blog! Love the poster!

John T. Quinn III: Thanks smo! We can't talk about it yet. March 2013 is when the muzzle comes off.

inb4 TsWade2 faps to the words, "hand drawn," "Mickey," and "Steamboat Willie."

In all seriousness, this looks like a really good idea. So, Disney, don't screw up the remake.

Umm... I know I'm gonna get the 'Don't knock it until you tried it' response, but does the phrase 'Don't fix what isn't broken' have any meaning anymore?

It looks very promising ! Hopefully they play it on the Disney Channel when it's done like the other Mickey toons.

That's an awesome idea, but will that be disrespectful for Walt Disney? :-?

I think it's more if just an homage to the original. I wouldn't call it a "remake". Especially since its a different style for each shot.

More people with power at Disney today could really use a strong dose of that wisdom. Way too many "reboots, reimaginings and homages" slapped with the "Disney" name these days IMO. None of it was ever broken, so why "fix it?"
