May 17, 2013 - August 6th will be the next big day for Disney animation on Blu-ray. That Tuesday will bring new anniversary edition combo packs of The Sword in the Stone (50th Anniversary), Robin Hood (40th Anniversary; $36.99 SRP), and Oliver & Company (25th Anniversary). Sword and Robin will each include downloadable digital copies and carry a list price of $36.99 SRP. Sword will add a new alternative opening where Wart Meets Merlin to classic DVD bonus features including the cartoon shorts A Knight for a Day and The Brave Little Tailor, the excerpt "All About Magic", and the featurette "Music and Magic: The Sherman Brothers." Robin Hood will add the never-before-seen deleted storyline "Love Letters" to recycled extras including an alternate ending, art gallery, sing-along, Song Selection, and the Mickey Mouse short Ye Olden Days. Simply a Blu-ray + DVD, Oliver will have a reduced retail price of $29.99 SRP. Click here for cover art and preorders.

I prefer the last cover they had, the angle is odd to me. I probably won't buy this release of it either. I'm actually surprised TSitS and Robin Hood get so many releases; I didn't know many people liked them (I love TSitS, but thought I was the minority). I haven't bothered to get the new releases, because these movies seem to be barebones every time.

You only need to click on the picture (to increase it) and then right-click on it to open a menu. Depending on the browser you use, there should be somewhere an option like "copy URL of the picture". Click on it and then paste the copied URL wherever you want it to be.

I wonder what inspired Disney to release this ? not one of their out-and-out favorites...

Robin Hood is a top-5 for me, while The Sword in the Stone hangs around somewhere in the top-20 range (more the 11-20 range, depending on my mood).

They've been releasing all their lower-tier titles in various waves since last year (July 2012, August 2012, October 2012, March 2013, June 2013, August 2013).

I'm just glad it's one of the titles to offer something new (the "Wart Meets Merlin" deleted scene) in addition to their older bonuses, rather than being completely barebones (*sigh* The Emperor's New Groove and Lilo & Stitch *sigh*).

Of course, if I had my druthers, we'd get more than that:

*Commentary
*Isolated Score
*Making-of Documentary (and since I'm wishful-thinking, have it hosted by Colin Morgan, even though "Merlin" ended last year)
*Chanticleer Featurette
*Bill Peet Tribute
*"All About Magic" in its entirety (re-instating the Fantasia sequence that wasn't included on the 2001 DVD, which was shortened yet again to just the 7-minute first segment in 2008's DVD)
*Expanded Art Galleries
*Theatrical Trailers

I'm with Scaps, in that Robin Hood is in my Top 5, so I'm very happy about this release!

"All About Magic" appears to be the same shortened excerpt as featured on the 2008 DVD, which keeps the first act of the episode (mainly the Walt stuff), but removes the "Magician Mickey," "Trick or Treat," and "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" excerpts. The 2001 DVD included those, comprising roughly 3/4 of the episode (37:26 running time), but did not include "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" sequence from Fantasia.

I'm looking forward to the alternate opening ("Where Wart Meets Merlin"), as I think it might feature a more formal presentation of "The Magic Key," the deleted song that Richard Sherman sings in the "Music Magic" featurette, which was replaced by "Higitus Figitus."

I'm really hoping that the bonus cartoons are HD, and not just ports of the SD versions used on the DVD. Would be wonderful to see "Brave Little Tailor" in high-definition. But given that the bonus cartoons on the Blu-Rays for The Aristocats, The Rescuers, and Pocahontas were in SD, the cartoons on The Sword in the Stone likely will be as well. WDSHE, please prove me wrong...

Mentioned in the press release but not included in this batch from the BBFC are the interactive DVD game "Merlin's Magical Academy" and Disney Song Selection, both from the 2008 DVD.

Also, for anyone interested, the VAM for Robin Hood was also passed:

"Love Letters" absolutely intrigues me, as I have no idea what it will contain. Still, I wish we also had the alternate demos for "Love" and "The Phony King of England," which Huston Huddleston (son of Floyd Huddleston and Nancy Adams) posted on YouTube.

And it looks like the "Art Gallery" is really all we'll ever get in terms of a making-of piece for the film.

I'm hoping more material will be included for Robin Hood, since it's advertised as containing "Over an Hour of Extra Content" but the listed materials only add up to 51 minutes:

I'll be buying the Blu-Ray for Sword in the Stone, but I'm keeping my old Gold Collection DVD as well. At least until we get more Disneyland episodes out on DVD.

Same here. It also has the animated ratio and the still gallery (a modest 61 stills, but better than nothing), neither of which are featured on the Blu-Ray.

I've got both DVDs of Robin Hood (2000 Gold Classic Collection & 2006 Most Wanted Edition), and I'll gladly buy the 40th Anniversary Blu-Ray.

Scaps, what from the previous "Robin Hood" DVD releases isn't being included on the Blu-ray?

...I know I could just dig up the press release and sift through the UD reviews, but I though you might know off the top of your head. Besides, we're friends, and that's what friends do... right? RIGHT?!

Not included on this Blu-Ray: (based on BBFC, the press release, DisneyDVD.com, etc.)

From the Gold Classic Collection DVD:
* Robin Hood in 1.33:1 Academy Ratio
* Colorized version of "Ye Olden Days"
* 16-question Trivia Game
* "Read the Story by Yourself" option for the storybook (56 stills)

From the Most Wanted Edition DVD:
* Interactive Game: "Rescue Marian"
* Interactive Game: "Archery Trivia Challenge"
* Art Gallery (48 stills)

The Art Gallery is the standard "thumbnails on pages" version of the gallery, which spread the 48 stills across 11 pages. All the stills appear in the "Video Gallery" with narration, and is what appears to be carried over to the Blu-Ray. Since the lazy folks at WDSHE simply port over video features, it makes sense why they'd port over the Video Gallery but not the art gallery or interactive games.

Frankly, I'm surprised that the "Have the Story Read to You" storybook is showing up on the Blu-Ray, but I guess they did it to pad out the supplements. You know, as opposed to a nice 15-minute featurette about the making of the film.

Well, not off the top of my head. Off the top of my word documents where I keep track of these things (if I'm committed enough to a title. My notes for Oliver & Company are terribly out of date...)

One Big problem with this release is the Blu ray Transfers. This a link to the comparison shots that Lnds500 posted.

Don't tell me it's the furthest thing from an improvement over the DVD's restoration job.
