Hong Kong (CNN) -- The North Korean army has declared invalid the armistice agreement that ended the Korean War in 1953, the official newspaper of the country's ruling Workers' Party said Monday.

Since last week, North Korea had been threatening to scrap the armistice after the U.N. Security Council passed tougher sanctions against it in response to its February 12 nuclear test.

You know, if North Korea gets obliterated in an imminent war, I'm going to miss it. It is, quite simply, my favourite dystopian country, and supplies a special sort of hilarity...the kind that can make you burst into tears and laugh hysterically at the same time.

North Korea Says 'War May Break Out At Any Moment' As It Cuts Dialogue Channel
Reuters | Posted: 03/27/2013 5:01 am EDT | Updated: 03/27/2013 6:38 pm EDT

SEOUL, March 27 (Reuters) - Reclusive North Korea is to cut the last channel of communications with the South because war could break out at "any moment", it said on Wednesday, days of after warning the United States and South Korea of nuclear attack.

The move is the latest in a series of bellicose threats from North Korea in response to new U.N. sanctions imposed after its third nuclear test in February and to "hostile" military drills under way joining the United States and South Korea.

The North has already stopped responding to calls on the hotline to the U.S. military that supervises the heavily armed Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and the Red Cross line that has been used by the governments of both sides.

"Under the situation where a war may break out at any moment, there is no need to keep north-south military communications which were laid between the militaries of both sides," the North's KCNA news agency quoted a military spokesman as saying.

"There do not exist any dialogue channel and communications means between the DPRK and the U.S. and between the north and the south."

Despite the shrill rhetoric, few believe North Korea, formally known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), will risk starting a full-out war.

North and South Korea are still technically at war anyway after their 1950-53 civil conflict ended with an armistice, not a treaty, which the North says it has since torn to pieces.

The "dialogue channel" is used on a daily basis to process South Koreans who work in the Kaesong industrial project where 123 South Korean firms employ more than 50,000 North Koreans to make household goods.

About 120 South Koreans are stationed at Kaesong at any one time on average.

It is the last remaining joint project in operation between the two Koreas after South Korea cut off most aid and trade in response to Pyongyang's shooting of a South Korean tourist and the sinking of a South Korean naval vessel blamed on the North.

Kaesong is one of North Korea's few hard currency earners, producing $2 billion a year in trade with the South, and Pyongyang is unlikely to close it except as a last resort.

The North's military spokesman representing its "supreme command" did not mention Kaesong, which has suffered temporary shutdowns before.

The South's government said it would take steps to ensure the safety of the workers at Kaesong. It did not elaborate. (Reporting by Jack Kim; Editing by Nick Macfie)

heh, N. Korea doing nothing but empty threats again. They really don't have the balls to go the initiative, because they know deep down they'd get the ass handed to them hard. As much as I'd love N. Korea to make the first move just so we can end that shitfest of a regime.

I hope they are just empty threats. I really don't want the U.S. in another war.

Still, I feel very sorry for South Korea having to have that country sitting right above them. :(

This. If I were South Korean, I don't think I'd be able to sleep at night knowing a nationwide bunch of crazies could easily nuke me and everyone I know and love when we're least expecting it. If I lived in South Korea, and had enough money, I'd move to another, safer country.

You are aware that:

a.) N. Korea only have it's missiles aimed specifically at Seoul as oppose to the rest of the country,

and

b.) S. Korean's military is really strong and can easily kick N. Korea's ass too even without USA's help.

right?

the only problem with the missiles issue is that we don't have insight or knowledge on where on specific location their missiles would launch from. If we knew, their threat would be reduce to dead 0% as we could launch counter coordinate missile at the N. Korea's shitty missiles technology before it could hit Seoul.

I don't get North Korea. One move and they're dead. They must know this right?

It would be a quick war. N Korea would kick our shins and then we would nuke them into history.

I heard that one of the missiles was aimed at, San Antonio Texas

No missile can go from North Korea to San Antonio Texas. I mean what, did they invade a Death Star or Something??

Their missiles can't even reach Hawaii. Closest to USA they could possibly reach is Guam. If not that then it would be USA bases in east Asia areas.

Should they start a war, would China have their back? If that is the case, it will not be a quick and decisive war. And that is the last thing the US needs.

That's what I've wondered, too. But I believe even China came out against North Korea one of the last times they had missile tests. I need to find that article again, but I'm pretty sure I'm remembering right. :?

Correct. china, N. Korea's biggest ally, was even against them as they supported the sanctions too. But they're doing not because of sake of goodness, but because of their own interests. N. Korea is making more and more of a fool out of themselves and thus are slowly backing away from ties with N. Korea. Hell, a wikileak even reveal that China seemly suggestively support a united Korea in the end, despite the whole original intent of China being N. Korea's ally is because they can use N. Korea as a buffer state so USA can't have bases closer to their country. At this point, China probably seeing N. Korea as nothing but useless by now.

No. China will not risk fighting their best customers, USA and also the fact China and it's economy is booming and will not risk losing that either. And even still, USA's military is still 10x superior than theirs and can fuck them up any how. So while war won't be as quick or decisive, USA would still kick China's ass. We spend more on Military than any other country. Even with a military budget cut, we still have enough to fuck over any country 10x over.

I for one hope diplomatic solution can be found. I can't believe the kid is as nuts as his dad. I have to wonder if it's not actually that the advisers are the real crazies?

You have to be a naive optimist to think a diplomatic solution with fucking N. Korea would happen. They didn't even listen to China for christ sake. What makes you think they'll want negotiate with us of all people?

And yes you're correct that more than likely Kim Jong Un's aunt and uncle are the real power controllers. His aunt, Kim Jong II's sister, has extreme power and influence. It's no surprise that she would puppets Kim Jung Un from behind the scenes.

I don't think it'll happen, as much as I want them to attack so we can end the regime. Despite the rhetoric nonsense they been sprouting, N. Korea deep down knows they could never manage to but even a dent on US and thus if they did attack, that would be the end of their regime.
