Star vs. the Forces of Evil

Disney Channel has ordered "Star and the Forces of Evil" (working title), an animated comedy adventure about a fun-loving magical teen princess from another dimension who -- after a few bold skirmishes with other-worldly monsters -- is sent by her Royal Parents to live with the Diaz family on Earth. Eden Sher provides the voice of the lead character, Star Butterfly. Production has begun for a scheduled Fall 2014 premiere. The announcement was made today by Eric Coleman, Senior Vice President, Original Series, Disney Television Animation.
Artist and writer Daron Nefcy is the series creator and co-executive producer. She is a 2009 California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) graduate whose work has been showcased throughout the Los Angeles underground art COMMUNITY. Her television credits include recent work on Disney Channel's upcoming animated series, "Wander Over Yonder," and the Warner Bros. animated series "MAD." Emmy and Annie Award-winning director Dave Wasson is co-executive producer and director, and Annie Award-winning writer Jordana Arkin is co-executive producer and story editor.
Coleman said: "Disney continues to focus on discovering fresh voices in animation. When Daron pitched her show, we fell in love with her characters, her style and her sensibility. And with the deep talent and experience of Dave Wasson and Jordana Arkin, this show furthers our commitment to create great new stories for kids and families."
"Star and the Forces of Evil" tells the stories of other-worldly teen princess Star Butterfly, who must settle in to her new Earthly home with the Diaz family. Soon she takes their teenage son, Marco, on adventures to help her battle evil villains, whether throughout the universe or in their high school, all in an effort to protect her powerful magic wand… which Star still figuring out how to use.

For a moment I almost got mislead and thought it said "Star Wars and the forces of evil".
well not sure on this series.

Well, it's nice to see Disney Channel adding more cartoons than adding more stupid rejected tween sitcoms, but I'm a little bit mixed on that idea, for now. But we'll just wait and see how it looks. In the meantime, I can't wait to see Wonder Over Yonder.

This series started as a Cartoonstitute pitch, then went to Nickelodeon where a one-minute short pilot was made. It was finally picked up by Disney TV Animation.
Q: What new animations do you have in the pipeline?
Eric Coleman: We have one show called Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero, which we are excited about. We have another called Star and the Forces of Evil, with a young female creator. The first show was created by animation veterans, and then Star is from a young graduate from CalArts. We are very excited to be collaborating with Lucasfilm on Star Wars Rebels. That’s probably about all I can say about that series at this point; that one probably has the highest level of secrecy of anything I have ever seen.

Sounds like the creator of the series is a fan of Sailor Moon and magical girl series.

I hate the concept style. It looks like Adventure time, I just really hope it isn't as bad as that.

I'm sure it will be very similar. With the success of Adventure Time and other similar shows on Cartoon Network, that seems to be the "style of the moment" that everyone is trying to capture. Look at Gravity Falls and the upcoming Wander Over Yonder. Same stuff. I admit that I'm not too fond of it either, but there's no arguing that it's been successful in the past few years.

I actually thought the premise sounded fun . . . you know, my inner Sailor Moon fangirl and all that.
Then I saw the designs.

This style of animation lately reminds me of Ren and Stimpy.
That's why in my opinion Phineas and Ferb looks better drawn. And Perry looks like he came out of a Ducktales time warp

I can actually agree with that.
I read about this a while ago. It makes me miss the old days when Disney tv toons were worth watching. *sigh* I miss The Disney Afternoon shows!

What do I like about Adventure Time is the better question. I honestly think that Adventure Time is one of the most pointless shows ever, and the animation to it is horrid.

Adventure Time is fun as heck. Just because it's different doesn't mean it's bad. I find it very similar in design to cartoons of the 1920s and 30s.

It's sad that Disney doesn't feel confident in using 'classic' Disney designs and styles anymore for their TV output like they once did with Disney Afternoon and instead prefer copying the styles of popular Cartoon Network/Nickelodeon shows.

While I agree that I wish it wasn't just a matter of copying whatever style is "in", I don't think they should be limited to using strictly "classic Disney" design like they did in Disney Afternoon. I think ideally they'd have a nice variety of styles across their TV shows.

Yes, they shouldn't restrict themselves to the Disney style but they shouldn't abandon it completely either (which they admittedly have).

I mean Japan does love magical girl shows.

Hmm, to each their own. It is simplistic in its art design, yes - but this series has continuity and maturity many cartoons lack. Yes, it is goofy and surreal but by maturity I mean the dialogue is often filled with double entendres and sort of winks at the older audience. I love the fact it is set in a post-apocalyptic world but that fact is never mentioned. Yet, you see old TV sets in bushes or vine-covered airplanes or rusted army tanks. Also, they develop the Ice King's backstory. And Finn has changed love interests from Princess Bubblegum to the Fire Princess. It's this attention to character/world development that particularly impresses me. I grew up with Cartoon Network and rushed home after school to catch all my favorite shows on the channel. Adventure Time enchants me as much as anything from the 90s.
