Vulture reports that Warner Bros. is currently in negotiations with Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment to reboot Gremlins. Yup, this is for real.
The Spielberg produced, 1984 Joe Dante-directed classic, which spawned one sequel and many rumors of a Gremlins 3 that never transpired, has apparently been eyed for years as remake material. Until now, it proved to be too pricey. However, it may be closer to a reality this time around, with Spielberg’s production company expressing an interest.

Funny, I was listening to an interview with Chris Columbus the other day and he said how he hoped they don't try to do a new, modernised Gremlins with CG.
I hope, at the very least, they bring in Dante, Columbus, Spielberg and Chris Walas (or if he's not available, Rick Baker) on this.

Hollywood is scraping the bottom of the barrel, trying to boost their box office receipts.
Best thing we can do is avoid the film when it is released and wait for the rental, and then you make sure it is the free one when you use your coupon for 'Rent One Get One Free'.

It was inevitable I suppose. Let's just see how long it takes for a remake of Back to the Future.

‘Gremlins’ Remake Coming From the Writer of ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
In keeping with the plan to remake every single 80s movie that you ever liked, Warner Bros. is moving ahead with the ‘Gremlins‘ remake. To help keep the quality of the reboot on part with the Steven Spielberg produced original, the studio has brought in…the guy who wrote ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter?’
This isn’t he first time we’re heard about the possibility of a ‘Gremlins’ remake but now it appears as if its real. Bloody Disgusting reports that Warner Bros. has hired Seth Grahame-Smith and producer David Katzenberg to bring a remake of the 80s horror-comedy classic to the big screen. Grahame-Smith is probably known best for his infamously bad ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’ film and, speaking of remakes, is also working with Tim Burton on a potential ‘Beetlejuice’ remake.
We’re of the opinion that a ‘Gremlins’ remake is a horribly bad idea (if for no other reason than they’ll replace all the Mogwai and Gremlin puppets with CGI creatures) but here’s where things could get interesting.
No studio can remake a Steven Spielberg movie without the approval of Spielberg himself (it’s true: it’s in his contract). Producer David Katzenberg is the son of mega-producer Jeffrey Katzenberg, who is partners with Steven Spielberg in DreamWorks. Spielberg and David are buddies; they even go to Laker games together. So this ‘Gremlins’ remake can’t happen without Spielberg’s blessing and, considering how close he is with the producer, might he return as an executive producer and offer some creative consulting?
It will be interesting to see how this project develops. We kinda just hope it dies a slow death and never happens but if Spielberg remains involved in some capacity, we’ll at least be curious to see what kind of advice he’s able to give the new filmmakers.
EDIT
I need to see the original

Eh, I don't mind if they don't turn CG on our asses.

If Hollywood finds it necessary to reboot movies, it's time to hand them their pink slips & replace them with young fresh people that want those positions. Also, If they hire actors for movies that have sequel potential, they should hire new actors & sign them to a three to five movie deal. At least this way we will see the same actors playing the parts.

This is such a sucky idea, but if it were to happen, then they gotta keep the puppets, and not make the entire film was massive CGI fest.
And dear god, can you imagine the toys / games etc that will come with this?? It will be Furby mania all over again

People are getting upset that the Gremlins will likely be CGI, but if the filmmakers had this sophisticated enough technology, they would have definitely had made them with computer effects in 1984. The reason directors use computer effects is not because of cheapness and laziness (as is so often thought), it's because of the endless possibilities of the medium. I think puppets are great and the effects in the two Gremlins movies hold up remarkedly well, but CG will give the director more freedom. Even Joe Dante (the director of Gremlins) used computer animation in Small Soldiers.

I watched Small Soldiers this past January for the first time since one other time I saw it in '99 and I didn't feel the CGI in it was an eyesore. Small Soldiers is fifteen years old and CGI has made leaps and bounds since that film's release.
