Top Music Videos

What are your Top music videos. I urge people to think about the actual video, and if possible try to ignore the music.
Here's my top 5 with reasons:
5. Take On Me A-Ha
Live action and rotoscoped animation. At the time it was the ultimate in music videos!
4. Weapon of Choice Fatboy Slim
Christopher Walken dances. 'Nuff said.
3. Wannabe The Spice Girls
I've not seen this for a while, but it appears to be one single shot. If it's not then they must do the wipes when people or objects pass in the foreground. Either way, it's an impressive video.
2. Save Me Amiee Grant
You can see this on the Magnolia DVD. Never before has a music video tied to a film captured not only the actors in character so well but also the general feel of the film.
1. Across The Universe Fiona Apple
You can see this on the Pleasentville DVD. Another video directed by P. T. Anderson and an absolute stunner. No actors from the film, but the feel of Pleasentville is perfectly captured. Dispite the violence shown, it's also quite beautiful.

I don't watch music videos a lot, but from what I've seen . . .
1. Amish Paradise - Weird Al (if you need an explanation, then just go watch the video)
2. Smells Like Nirvana - Weird Al (same as above)
3. The Scientist - Coldplay (backwards and beautiful)
4. Fell in Love with a Girl - The White Stripes (the whole thing is in lego blocks - cool or what?)
5. Weapon of Choice - Fatboy Slim (same as netty)

There's another Amy Grant?? Ok, different spelling, lol
Hmm, mine are probably:
Black Or White - Michael Jackson
Fat - Weird Al
Thriller - Michael Jackson
Amish Paradise - Weird Al
Big Yellow Taxi - Amy Grant
Simple Things - Amy Grant
All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey
Waterfalls - TLC
It's All Coming Back To Me - Celine Dion
Celebrity - Brad Paisley
Without Me - Eminem
Men In Black - Will Smith
Oops I Did It Again - Britney Spears
Bye, Bye, Bye - Nsync
Scream - Michael & Janet Jackson
Sorry, they just keep coming to me... I'm not even crazy about some of those songs, but I love the videos. I really like high budget, cinematic videos.

1) "Buddy Holly" - Weezer
I think awallace's Amy Grant avatar have made 2099net all discombobulated. He surely means Aimee Mann.

And the newer video - Hardest Button to Button - by Michel Gondry is one of the best.
Ok, in no particular order.
Nine Inch Nails - The Perfect Drugs: Directed by Mark Romanek (
One Hour Photo).
A gothic-looking, Absinth-fueled nightmare of a video, with a thumping tune to go with it.
Beastie Boys - Sabotage: Directed by Spike Jonze (
Being John Malkovich, Adaptation).
Parody of 70s cops shows. Really cool, awesome song too.
Blur - Coffee & TV: Directed by Hammer & Tongs.
A heartwarming tale of a little milk carton going off to find the guy who is advertised as lost on the side of his body. On the way he falls in love. Smart, funny, sad and sweet.
The Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight, Tonight: Driected by Dayton & Farris
An almost scene for scene remake of the silent classic 'A Journey to the Moon' (or is it 'Voyage'). Absolutely stunning, abd deservedly award winning. The song is just as special.
Not if You Were The Last Junkie on Earth - The Dandy Warhols: Directed by David La Chappelle (you'd know his photography).
Brightly coloured set, drug-f*cked band play on stage, transvestite in 'Price is Right' mode showing off tombstones and a mine throwing up. What more could you want? Oh, and the song rocks too.
Beautiful People - Marilyn Manson: Directed by Floria Szigmondi.
Like or hate his music, this is a visually stunning video.
What I Don't Know About You - You Am I: Directed by Mark Hartley
A parody of the Aussie classic movie Don's Party with a bunch of Aussie actors in cameos. Lots of fun. Damn good tune.
A few others I love that have been mentioned were
Buddy Holly by Weezer and
Weapon of Choice by Fatboy Slim. Both are directed by Spike Jonze.
There are heaps more, will add when I think of them.

Most of the goodies have already been mentioned:
Buddy Holly
Sabotage
Weapon Of Choice
A few that have not been mentioned:
Thriller: Michael Jackson
November Rain; Guns & Roses
Ironic : Alanis Morsette
Rock DJ: Robbie Williams
Some recent ones that are entertaining:
Hey Ya: Outkast
Cry me a River : Justin Timberlake
No offense but how is "oops I did it again" a good video? There is not really a story or anying innovative going on in it?

Britney. School girl uniform. 'Nuff said.
Which brings me to the great one I missed....
I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself - The White Stripes (I think it was directed by Sofia Coppola)
Kate Moss. Very skimpy clothing. Pole dancing. 'Nuff said.
On the above reasons alone, it should be awarded greatest video ever.

Thiller- Michael Jackson
A-Ha- Take on me
I swear- All for one
I will always love you- Whitney Houston.

I ran- Flock of seaguals

Oops I did it again does not have Britney in the school girl outfit. It is infact a red leather spacesuit she is wearing. I do not feel that an artist "lookin incredible" deems a good video.

NOOOOO!!!!!! Why did they have to wreck that great cover????
Though, Loomis, you ARE right about the other one. The Hardest Button to Button is awesome.

She looks even better in the red suit. Aside from that, I think it is a good video. I like the concept and the camera motion, as well as the flashy colors and the big-budget feel of it. The corny dialogue could've been left out, though. You don't have to have a story for a good video.

Though Brit may look good in that video it cannot touch any of the ones I have mentioned. Besides she looks much better in her other videos, Stronger is my fav Brit video but it is not one of the greatest videos of all time.

I still say it's her hottest (ok, one of her hottest. Toxic, which I also like, is a competitor), and it's a great video. I don't think some of your's (Ironic, Cry Me A River) belong on the list, either. So we'll have to agree to disagree.

At least we both listed Thriller.

Hey, any video can be anyone's favorite!
I love the dancing with the chair in Stronger, when it turns into a cane, and is then thrown onto the ground and bounces off as a chair again. Subtle effects, but effective. Sometimes the smaller stuff is the best.

I forgot to add "Billie Jean" Michael Jackson

You know, "subtle" was never a word that would have occured to me in relation to the Britney Music Factory...
