Somehow I doubt that's true. They're probably trying to build additonal anticipation for Episode IX after the Last Jedi backlash and Solo not meeting box office expectations by making it appear it would be the last Star Wars film people would be able to see at the movies in a while. This supposed "hiatus" would probably last two years tops and Iger makes it sound like it'd be closer to 5-10 years. Sure, Jan.

It's the same tactic Marvel seems to be employing after Endgame. You know they're cooking something but they won't be announcing it any time soon.

The hiatus won't last long. Disney already has two trilogies planned, one both Rian Johnson (director of The Last Jedi) and one by the Game of Thrones guys. Right now both are still being developed so they wouldn't be able to be released immediately after The Rise of Skywalker. Will probably be two years or so. In the meantime, Disney still has all their new Star Wars shows on Disney Plus during this gap period. They may have intentionally done this so that fans will have to flock to the streaming service to fill in the void.

So after they ruined A Song of Ice and Fire, they are going to ruin Star Wars next.

Wow, from all the online reaction, I never realized GoT fans are as salty as even the Star Wars fandom. They are being brutal with Benioff and Weiss, which imo, fully qualifies them as Star Wars filmmakers since they'll have that experience to draw on when dealing with a new wave of rabid fans.

"Salty" ? About what? The show often has diverged from the books in order to place ridiculous plot points and twists that make no sense. They got rid of the big threat in a cheap manner and introduced the biggest plot twist of the series in a very rushed and dinky manner, ignoring how in the last years all the foreshadowing that would've made the twist work was brushed off by them. The character that they lionized so much over the last years was supposed to be the final villain, and they only accepted that at the penultimate episode of the series. That's just bad decision after bad decision.

Not to mention the hatred is also coming from people all across the political spectrum, feminists who have looked up to Dany as an empowered female are really angry about this. So it's not just "lol entitled fanbabies who don't like women" like the narrative pushes to Star Wars.

I don't think they are the best people to do Star Wars since I don't agree with their nihilistic world-view and I find Star Wars to be about hope.

Got that right. They need to go far far away. Clearly the show did well because of the books and when they ran out of book material to lean on and had to rely on their own judgment to direct the story points they were given by the writer, they failed in spectacular fashion.

So that show they wanted to do to glamorize slavery in the U.S. didn't work out? Hmm. Thankfully I have no real love for Star Wars. When they turn it all to garbage, it won't affect me.

Yeah, even in the darkest Star Wars movies (ROTS, TESB, Rogue One), hope is always a huge factor in the endings.

I heard about this before, and while I have no knowledge of Game of Thrones, this alone makes me wary about any future projects these two might be given.

Do you think it had to do with the Game of Thrones backlash? I mean there's been criticism of Rian Johnson and The Last Jedi but he's still making his Star Wars trilogy.

^I read the entire Twitter thread but didn't get what was offensive about it. In any case, Benioff and Weiss are citing scheduling conflicts.
In August, Deadline broke the news that the GoT duo had signed a nine-figure deal with Netflix, and on Monday, that commitment was the one that brought about the end of the Great Westeros Experiment by Disney and Lucasfilm. “There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects,” the GoT pair said in a statement to Deadline. “So we are regretfully stepping away.”

An insider is saying it's due to the recent Disney/Netflix rivalry.
Jason Ward wrote:A source says the Benioff and Weiss situation was the most amicable of the departures and the bad blood is between the corporations with this one.

I'm glad they're gone. And there was plenty of offensive content in that Twitter thread. They basically disparaged the fantasy genre and admitted that they had no qualifications and were just lucky to get the show. That Q and A session went viral for a reason.
