Hello,

This is my first post here as I have recently discovered the magic and value of Disney movies. As a 27 year old male, I have avoided many Disney movies just because I was a stupid guy who refused to acknowledge that they were good and not just for kids.

Anyways, I am trying to build a solid library of Disney movies on DVD. I realize that I am too late to pick up some of the out of print titles (like "Lion King II" or "101 Dalmations")... but I would like to know what are some of the better Disney sequels out there. I picked up "101 Dalmations II" yesterday and thought it was a good little movie.

What Disney movies currently available (including the direct-to-video sequels) are generally considered the best to own?

Also, is there a way to sign up for the Disney Movie Club via regular snail mail, or do I have to do it online?

Welcome to the forum. I hope you'll stick around.

I haven't seen too many of the DTV sequels, but I do have Lion King II and Little Mermaid II, and both of those are pretty decent.

As far as the DMC goes, the site seems to imply you can sign up by mail, but I don't know the details. You can try calling 1-800-362-4587 and see if they can get you set up.

Of course, they won't be able to give you the 4-DVD commitment instead of the default 6-DVD commitment. That's only doable online. But it works out to a significantly better deal, and using our links supports the site.

What is one of your favorite Disney animated movies? I love "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "The Lion King"... and "Aladdin" is one of my all-time favorites. The latter is the only one I have seen in the theater -- the rest I have viewed on video the last couple of months.

The Lion King is #1 for me! Really love it, and it was such a joy to see it on the IMAX screen last December. I actually hadn't seen a number of the animated classics when I started the site, but in recent months I've got the number of ones to see down to a minimum. Right now, I've seen all except 4 of the anthology features from the late '40s and "Fox and the Hound." I must say I love a lot of them. Misfires are few and far-between, and for the most part, they just pour so much heart and charm into film - something which is rarely captured in a live-action film. Makes them really unique and wonderful.

Other favorites of mine are The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Pinocchio. But outside of 5 or 6, I could throw out superlatives for all of the Disney animated features I've seen. Which kind of explains why I've got a site on Disney DVD.

The next movie I am planning on seeing is "The Fox and the Hound"... I have found myself to be such a sucker for movies about animals and friendship. But you are absolutely right -- Disney makes the best animated movies with so much heart and warmth. I could kick myself for staying away from them for so long.

Which urges me to ask another question. What do you think of Disney's practice of discontinuing titles for 10 years at a time? Do you think it is good business... or does it hurt people like me who are late getting into the game, especially on DVD.

I'm sure the moratorium practice encourages sales, probably more than it hurts them by not letting people buy titles.

But in any event, as of their newly-announced May 1 plans, the 10-year moratorium is being chopped down to just 5 years. For some reason, Disney is really interested in seeing profits NOW.

My Favorite Disney Sequel is Return to Neverland. Hold my tongue, but in some respects I think it's better than Peter Pan.

Just from reading Luke's review I can see he doesn't agree, and I know Jake doesn't from conversations I've had.

I'm also rather fond of Atlantis:Milo's Return - not as a sequel as such, it's falls apart if taken as a film, but as the only example of the now cancelled animated series spin-off, I think it shows that the Atlantis TV series could have been one of Disney's best.

i'm quite fond of The Rescuers Down Under, which for many people, don't even know that it is a sequel to The Rescuers!

my favoritres are 101 dalmatians 2 , return to nevrerland, lady and the tramp 2, lion king 2, rescuers down under i sort lke the dtvs a little like thoise but i just bought jb2 and ive never seen it before and whilke i was watching it i just thought whata piece of poo i just kept hoping that mowgli woluld get eaten but it in the end it wasnt a happy ending he wasnt eaten

I've read lots of reviews saying that 101 dalmatians 2 is one of the better sequels Disney has made.

Out of the direct to video and other sequels that I own (about 1/2 a dozen), only a few really stand out for me.
I like all the Winnie the Pooh ones (Pooh's Grand Adventure - which I don't think is available in the US? - and the Tigger Movie), and judging from your avatar you might too, souldog.

Other than that, I'd have to say I enjoyed the recently released Atlantis:Milo Returns the most. As 2099 pointed out, not a sequel per se, but a great example of what could have been.

I also have a soft spot for Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure. Many on this board have said there are really annoying bits in there, and yeah - there are. But still, I think it has a "wholesome" quality to it. Good coming of age story. Great DVD too (commentary, shorts, making of).

I also thought Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea was fun, although a rehash of the original with some really lame sidekicks. But as the original Mermaid was one of my faves (if not my fave), I couldn't help but like this a little.

No DTV sequels are good at all. The Rescuers Down Under, Fantasia 2000, and of course Toy Story 2 are very good movies, but then of course they weren't cheap bad DTV projects.

The only sequels I own are Fantasia 2000 and Toy Story 2 and I plan on getting The Rescuers Down Under. I usually don't care for the DTV sequels.

I'm not a huge fan of sequels, but one which I really enjoyed was The Lion King 2. But as you pointed out, it's OOP making it kind of hard to own a copy.

The best DTV sequel is Aladdin and the King of Thieves. Of course, if your're counting all sequels, then Rescuers Down Under and Toy Story outrank all the others.

Hands down, the best sequel is The Lion King II. I've never seen more developed characters for a Disney sequel. Also, in my opinion, the songs are very good!

*When reffering to sequels, I mean DTVs/Cheapquels...

I don't enjoy the sequels that much so I'm going to recommed some of the animated classics that are still in print or at least available. If you don't already own these, you should pick up some of the special/platinum editions of Mulan, Aladdin, Bambi and Lion King if available. Some dvd's from the 'Gold collection' are also pretty good. oh and also try to get a copy of The Emperor's New Groove (one of my all time favourites) don't know if you've seen it or not, but it's hilarious
