Maybe the rumored hand-drawn animated BlueBeard movie at Walt Disney Animation Studios...
I hadn't heard anything about this? Hopefully true though.
Yeah, I hope Sergio finds a new home, preferably at WDAS.

Tartakovsky has revealed that his upcoming R-rated film "Fixed" will be 2D-animated.
But after many false starts and other projects utilizing his time, โFixedโ is actually in production. Like, right now. Sony Pictures Animation has partnered with Renegade Animation, a Glendale, California-based studio co-founded by Darrell Van Critters, a veteran of Warner Bros. Animation and Disney Animation (he was the original director on what would eventually become โWho Framed Roger Rabbit?โ), to finally bring Tartakovskyโs passion project to life.
โWeโre doing a 2D animated rated-R movie. That is the golden ring that weโve been after since we were in our early 20s,โ Tartakovsky said. โWe would never think. And on top of that, itโs well-animated.โ Tartakovsky said he was looking at scenes that evoked Disneyโs classic โLady and the Trampโ (while maintaining that the level of animation isnโt quite to Disney because nothing is.) โThereโs feelings of that in there,โ Tartakovsky said. In describing โFixed,โ Tartakovsky said: โItโs raunchy but itโs got character and itโs cartoony. And itโs got heart. The humor isnโt pop culture humor. Thatโs the biggest thing. Thereโs no Kardashian jokes. Thereโs none of that. Itโs all character humor. Thatโs what makes it much more unique and stand out. It feels like nothing else.โ
While โFixedโ doesnโt have a release date yet, itโs close enough for Tartakovsky. โIโm beyond excited about it. Itโs 12 years in the making,โ Tartakovsky said. And the only place he could have made it was Sony Pictures Animation.
I definitely plan to see it in theaters to get studios like Disney to get back into hand-drawn animation, even though I feel they're already working on that return through the Tiana series.
Disney doesn't need to do 2D animation. Because of pencil tests and draw-overs, you can "feel the DNA of hand-drawn in the CG". Anyway, I'm not surprised Don Hall seems to have a distaste for 2D. When he was pitching Big Hero 6, Nik Ranieri suggested he make it in 2D given it's based on a comic book, and Don scoffed at him.
Don Hall: And itโs just pure animation, right? Thatโs why I love working in this medium. Itโs all Iโve ever really wanted to do. We kept talking about the carpet in Aladdin, and look at what they did. Look what amazing animators could do with a rectangle and some tassels, you know? And CG has got to the point now where you really can do anything. We did some 2D hand drawn iterations of Splat to kind of learn about its locomotion, and then they were able to transfer that into the CG.
Roy Conli: What I love about whatโs happening with Disney Animation, particularly in the CG realm, is you could feel that DNA of the hand drawn. In this film, I think there was a real focus on visiting an older style, a much broader style. And the wonder with CG is that you can do that, but then you can get those incredibly intimate scenes where the emotion plays so specifically and tightly. Itโs beautiful.
Well, let's hope that this isn't the case with the Tiana series since we don't seem to know where Stella Maghie's stance on hand-drawn animation is, though her fansmanship for The Princess and The Frog shows otherwise. And maybe you could have a point to feel Disney doesn't need to do 2D animation by thinking pencil tests and draw-overs show the feeling of the DNA of hand-drawn in the CG, but I think they should and my hope is that they are doing that with the Tiana series coming to Disney+ in late 2024.
It's not risky. That narrative was only forced out there because John Lasstetter hated hand-drawn animation which is why he forced Winnie the Pooh from 2011 up against Harry Potter 7 Part 2 and it bombed. Thankfully, The Princess and the Frog broke even so at least it's getting a sequel series on Disney+ from WDAS.
People blame Strange World bombing on bad marketing, un-Disney-looking character models (which I think are one of the movie's strengths), no faith in it, and the LGBTQ material in Ethan Clade, which is not why it bombed despite the incels and Karens saying as such.

Worse in terms of ticket sales than Home on the Range, Treasure Planet and The Black Cauldron. No one seems to blame that on CG.
There have been a lot of CG-animated flops and there will be many more in the future and no one is ever going to blame the medium or question the audience's interest in it. Why? Because for most people newer technology is always better. Therefore, in people's (and the industry's) mind, the newer, cutting-edge, "superior" medium of computer animation can't possibly be the reason a movie underperforms.

I also don't really think it's part of the discussion. Much like The Black Cauldron's failure isn't one of the given reasons why Disney gave up on hand drawn to begin with. I do think this type of CG style could be called into question though. It doesn't seem like WDAS has faced any knee jerk reaction from Strange World as far as we can see yet, outside of Chapek's firing. Perhaps history and the company will just remember it as a Chapek folly when all is said and done.
Well, looks like with the upcoming "Once Upon A Studio" short being shown before "Wish" and the upcoming Disney+ series "Tiana," if what I've heard is true regarding the show's animation style, looks like hand-drawn animation is about to make a comeback at Disney.

Despite its contemporary humor, โFixedโ actually celebrates the glories of 2D hand-drawn animation.
โIt has become a lost art. These days, everything is computer-generated. It was my dream to do this,โ he says, calling it a love letter to Bugs Bunny or Tex Avery, or even 1950s Disney. Murdocca added:
โIt became this homage. We were able to secure animators we never thought we would be able to get. Thatโs when it became very exciting.โ
