Say the name Andy Griffith, and you've said something about America.

Griffith, who, as Sheriff Andy Taylor on the actor's namesake 1960s TV comedy, kept the peace, and represented a heartland ideal, died Tuesday, the actor's friend Bill Friday told WITN News. He was 86.

In addition to The Andy Griffith Show, Griffith created a darkly iconic character in the 1957 film, A Face in the Crowd, and won fans in the long-running whodunit series, Matlock. But, in the end, it was Mayberry that put him on the map.

A big loss to entertainment industry with the passing of Andy Griffith today. My favorite memories of Andy was in the film "No Time For Sergeants" and "A Face In The Crowd", but my true favorite film of his was "Angel In My Pocket".

Andy was a true 'family-oriented' comedian and even at his raciest his humor was for all ages. We will miss most of all that 'aw shucks' smile.

R.I.P.: Andy Griffith

This is really sad; I only knew him from The Andy Griffith Show, but it's still sad to see such a legend pass. I wonder how Opie feels about all this? Rest in peace.

That is a real shame! I liked him in The Andy Griffith Show since he was hilarious. The "aw shucks" smile made me happy.

Rest in peace.

agreed. I'm afraid I never actually saw his work, but even I have to recognize it as legendary.
