Anyone else noticed?

Popped open the John Carter 3D Blu-Ray combo set. The 3D disc has the usual style of art. But the regular Blu-Ray disc... is just blue colored now without any disc art.

This is the first occurance that I've noticed. Any others out there like this?

Thanks for cheaping out on us Disney.

In the photo for the Cinderella box set, the Blu-ray discs appear as you described...

Not surprising they're looking to cut costs in the same way they've done for DVD.

And so it begins... Cue the end of physical media debates.

I'm sure this is all just part of Iger's plan to make everything more consistent.... Oh wait, half of my blu-rays have disc art, special features and "Walt Disney" above the title ... fudge.

-Seriously. I could care less about the lack of artwork on the discs, but the lack of any substantive special features on the upcoming stuff like Pocahontas and Tarzan (when there's a wealth of special features they could EASILY port from the 2-disc DVDs of each) infuriates me. We could also talk about the 'Diamond' editions of Lady and the Tramp, Lion King, Bambi... Disney is getting really stingy with their special features these days.

^ Regarding the special features, and just the overall marketing idiocy going on with Disney.... They had a good thing going when they offered both a 2 disc collector's edition with fancier cover art AND a goofy covered feature free 1 disc edition for the moms who just want the movie for their kids. Why the hell can't they go back to that? That way they can do their dumb 2 movie collections with no features, and still cater to the adult film collectors as well.

I mean the average stressed out parent reaching for a movie off the shelf at Target or Walmart these days probably doesn't even care if they are grabbing a blu-ray or dvd copy of the movie. I'm not denying that they are a HUGE demographic for Disney's sales, but I just don't understand the neglect of a group of fans that the studio has always catered to up until now.

I don't see how this is so surprising to anyone. They've done the exact same thing on the DVD era. The DVDs after a while became silver and only some of the Diamond titles had artwork on them

Not so much surprising.. As it is upsetting!"We", the target audience, keep on buying anyway. Disney(iger) knows that and has gone through numerous lengths to skimp out on whatever physical media they can. Funny thing is that Disney's response to limited sales has resulted in Disney Keychest ( digital storage)has a very limited following, and does not function properly. This is doomed to fail and instead of providing quality home entertainment they are swindeling their fanbase out of their hard earned cash! Not as much revolting as it is dum! Because it is only a matter of time before people will choose too no longer "collect", since there is little improvement over downloaded material.

You better be kidding with that. There's so much more to physical media than the disc art!

I'm still hoping certain releases like the Diamonds will get disc art or I'll just get lucky and Cinderella will get some.

I too noticed that Cinderella had plain blue and grey discs. I've all but given up on any artwork/extensive behind-the-scenes content but all I want is for them slash those prices. It's not worth paying $30-$40 for something that should cost $15-$20 at best.

Well that's just a Cinderella promo image/video. They might put art on the discs later.

I don't know Duster. I don't want you to get your hopes up. Disney prides themself on consistently disappointing their hardcore fans.

There is. Blu-ray looks and sounds noticeably better, and the golden Days of DVD collector's editions being loaded is about as good as it gets.

Disney's not the first studio to do this. Paramount does this on all their releases. Difference is they actually know what they're doing, Disney can barely save themselves from commercial failure.

It's so weird though because some studios (like Warner Bros) do a solid job of collector's editions for home video releases, Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz, Casablanca, Ben-Hur, etc have all gotten fantastic treatment.

I don't know if it's tied to a particular studio but I also think those Blu-ray books are very nice, all the special features from my 2-disc All About Eve DVD carried over onto the corresponding Blu-ray.

It's simply because they know people will buy regardless. For other studios, with the exception of some movies, it's not a matter of "if we put it on shelves, people will buy." Other studios actually have to give people a reason to buy their releases, and do so with bonus features, pristine presentation, great artwork, etc. But with Disney, they really only have to slap the title on there and people will buy regardless of content.

It's a vicious cycle.

Added a few pics in the first post in case any of you haven't seen the John Carter 3D Blu-Ray combo set yet.

I could care less about the disc art on 'John Carter (of Mars)'. Disney probably didn't think it was worthy of it after the dismal reception.

It does make me wonder why the 3D disc has artwork though. Guess they thought the mediocre conversion was going to be the best thing of the release.
