Disney Movie Studio Boss Rich Ross has been fired

Disney movie studio boss Rich Ross is stepping down, a month after the family entertainment giant booked a huge loss on the mega-budget sci-fi movie "John Carter."

Ross, the former head of Disney Channels Worldwide, had taken over for then-studio chair Dick Cook just two and a half years ago with a mission to cut costs and develop new hits.

But the losses continued under Ross despite major restructuring efforts.

A month ago, Disney said it would book a $200 million loss on "John Carter," a special-effects-laden movie based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs book series. The movie starring Taylor Kitsch had an estimated budget of $250 million, which matched what 20th Century Fox spent on "Avatar."

The problem is "John Carter" made only $269 million at box offices worldwide. After splits with theater owners and paying for marketing expenses, Disney estimated its losses on the movie will pull the entire studio into a loss of $80 million to $120 million in the quarter through March.

Ross, 50, said in a memo to staff Friday that the role of chairman of Walt Disney Studios was no longer right for him.

"The best people need to be in the right jobs, in roles they are passionate about, doing work that leverages the full range of their abilities," he said. "I no longer believe the chairman role is the right professional fit for me."

Ross' resignation is effective immediately. The Walt Disney Co. did not name a successor.

Disney CEO Bob Iger wished Ross well in a statement.

"Rich Ross's creative instincts, business acumen and personal integrity have driven results in key businesses for Disney, redefining success in kids and family entertainment and launching franchises that generate value across our entire company," Iger said. "I appreciate his countless contributions throughout his entire career at Disney, and expect he will have tremendous success in whatever he chooses to do next."

Hopefully, Rich Ross' successor will be more successful than he was at his job. :stitch:

Also, my feelings regarding this news, I'll let Daniel Bryan voice my joy,

It seems to me that the studio is better off without him. Aside from the success of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, Disney's Live-Action films have been steadily moving down hill.

I'm very interested to see what changes are made to the upcoming slate once someone else gets in charge.

Agreed in full, I wonder how Iger feels about dropping Dick Cook now?

I wonder what this means for 20,000 Leagues and Maleficent...

Good riddance though.

lol.

I pray John Carters losses don't effect other Disney movies e.g Maleficent!

I hope this doesn't ruin Maleficent or the live-action Cinderella...

What did Rich Ross do that was so bad? And he didn't have anything to do with Tangled and Frozen getting changed, did he? Just live-action films, right?

I didn't expect him to leave after such a brief time in the job but I'm certainly not sorry to see him go, especially given the way that Dick Cook was treated by the company when Ross was given the job.

Ultimately I think it's his failure to oversee a really successful film franchise at Disney. Disney decided to get rid of Dick Cook very suddenly and given Ross' success in charge of the Disney Channel with things like Hannah Montana, I think Disney thought that he might be able to create the profitable franchises that Bob Iger is desperate for. Obviously that hasn't happened and Ross has been held accountable for that.

No, Ross was just involved in live-action.

Some interesting information in this article that suggests Disney is having problems with Marvel and some possible successors for Ross.

YAY! Good riddance! Disney movies should be something more than those horrible Disney Channel tween movies. Iger was an idiot for letting Cook go and hiring Ross.

John Carter was such a turd. They shouldn't even bother releasing it on home video. Best forgotten. Put out Song of the South instead to make up the $200 Million JC lost.

At least the tween stuff from Disney is over. And John Carter wasn't even a good movie!

Ohhhh...it seems people are mostly celebrating his going because of what he had done to the Disney Channel.
