Around 2003-2005 there was development at DisneyToon Studios of a project called Princess Stories (not to be confused with the compilation DVDs of the same name). Other titles that were considered were Little Princess and Before Once Upon a Time. The animation was outsourced to Toon City Animation which is based in the Philippines. It looks like it was an earlier concept of the Disney Princess Enchanted Tales DTV series. I was only able to find a couple of mentions, some concept art and a short animation test.

The girl and her voice is really kawaii sugoi and moe. I like it.

That's pretty good animation for a television project. Unless this was a direct to video feature? Or even Toon Disney theatrical feature? Too bad this didn't happen. I REALLY like the pencil test. The little bit we know of it here makes me think of that new preschool series they have though, about the little girl princess who I think is supposed to hang with the Disney princesses...

From what I was able to find out, it was supposed to be DTV project but produced by Disney Television Animation and not DisneyToon Studios. That suggests that it was probably meant as a pilot for a series in the likes of Stitch! The Movie.

It's called Sofia the First and it's going to be CG. They will first air a made-for-TV movie which will serve as the pilot to the series.

I've found more concept art for this project. Very pretty and interesting.
