Does anyone have the laserdic version of Aladdin transferred to DVD?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The way the film looks on laserdisc is what I like to see. I have the dvd too, but every time I watch it I end up feeling a bit disappointed. The outlines of the characters are so thick now. It looks too cartoon-esque for my taste. For some reason the laserdics version looks much more mature.

More like a classic, less like a sequel.

So, can anyone help me with this?

Hmmm... I thought the original film had the thick-and-thin line...

But I admit that the mild tampering to the original film bothers me too... you know... the baklava... Jasmine;s birds... the moving boats on A Whole New World...

I can get the same effect as the Laserdisc by putting Vaseline on my TV.

If that is really what you are after, just trade in your HDTV for an SDTV.

Marky, you could cut out the middle man and buy a video capture card, connect it between your laserdisc player and a DVD recorder or computer, and burn that video to a DVD-R.

The text I bolded caught my attention. Just a few days ago I was actually comparing my new Aladdin UK blu-ray to my old Aladdin UK DVD (the 2-disc edition that came out 2004ish), and I couldn't help noticing that on the standard definition DVD the line-art does seem abnormally thick. Also, the DVD has another issue, that being a very annoying case of aliasing - mostly on the lineart and sometimes even on the background art. Since, if I recall correctly, you live in the Netherlands, then I suppose your DVD is a PAL disc and looks the same as mine. The new blu-ray, being high definition. is a definite improvement on the old DVD, and the lines look thinner and finer. However, the colours are mostly the same, so if they bothered you on the old DVD, they will too on the new blu-ray.

Have you tried tinkering with your TV's contrast/brightness/saturation/etc. settings to get better results on some of your DVDs? It can be surprisingly effective.

Also, you could do what Escapay said, i.e. buy a video capture card. But I hardly think you would be doing the film justice watching it on an outdated, murky, non-digital transfer from the early 1990s!

I won't question Marky's wanting the LD transfer, I am sure he has his reasons for it.

That being said, looking at the comparison.... I remember quite vividly when I watched Aladdin in theaters (more than once I might add), and the colors from the dvd are WAY closer to what I recall from the theater than the LD colors.

I do wish the dvd had the untampared transfer to Aladdin... (read my earlier posts on this forum). But I am happy with the colors and open matte (1.66:1). As far as the line thickness... not sure how that can vary unless they re-drew the film for the blu ray release...

Im curious to see how they compare...

The Vaseline is cheaper.

Technically, the capture card would only be necessary if he does it through a computer. I've heard laserdiscs have no macrovision, so he should have no issue capturing them with a DVD recorder.

I fully admit, I have Disney VHS tapes I want transferred to DVD simply for the nostalgia factor of seeing them all fuzzy and such and with previews and such. I'll probably figure out a way to do them soon enough. But I also still want the pristine restored Blu-Ray and DVD releases of the films as well.

True, I forgot about that.

emotionboy, I just use the screen-capture option from PowerDVD. To get them synced, it's more trial-and-error of knowing when to pause and compare to the other image.

I will say this is one scenario in which I prefer the dvd over the laserdisc. THe colors are less washed out, and more faithful to what I recall seeing in theaters. This is NOT compare to the coloring issues with Beauty and the Beast....

Also, from what I can see, but the laserdisc images are slightly stretched horizontally....

I was actually very happy with the dvd transfer of Aladdin. Like I mentioned before, I wish the mild tampering hadn't happened... but oh well. What can one do? I still have my old VHS in a box back home
