I was browsing the Disney section on iTunes and started checking if the movies have been upgraded to 1080p. I found that even some movies like the Black Cauldron were in 1080p. So I was thinking it would be interesting to compile a list of all the Disney movies which have not been released on Blu-ray yet and they are in 1080p on the store. we could also compare to the DVDs to see if they are sourced from a different master or if they're just upscaled. What do you think?

EDIT: Well, not a lot are in HD, let alone 1080p. I will try and keep it updated though
Movies in 1080p
The Black Cauldron
Home on the Range

Movies in 720p
Oliver and Company
Lilo & Stitch
Atlantis
The Mini Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (Pooh and Gopher / Stout and Round / Climb a Tree)

Certain Disney titles that have not yet been released on Blu-ray are available in 1080p for digital rental on Vudu, also including The Black Cauldron. I'd have to look through again to see which other ones though. :)

I just noticed that as well...

Linking from the iCloud/digital copy thread, Last year I have purchased Pocahontas (SD) on iTunes and the file size was 920MB.

Upon trying the new iCloud option to re-download past purchases and digital copies, I re-downloaded Pocahontas which is now 1.17GB with a different artwork and looks like a brand new transfer.

So basically it's possible to upgrade to a new version for free! Just like an App upgrade on the App Store... The only difference is it doesn't prompt you to upgrade, you need to delete your file and download again.

Hope this makes sense...

Oh wow, didn't think they had any in 720p, let alone 1080p. I might just buy Lilo & stitch, how much is it?

Their releases are becoming more and more barebones. Perhaps they’re preparing us for this? I hope not, all-digital means sales will be harder to come by and we’ll basically pay what they want us to pay. Also, no way to resell it when a new version comes out.

How do they look? Could anybody post screencaps? Also, is there any way to get them outside of itunes?

I suppose they aren't rippable. Otherwise they'd be up on the internet.

Their rippable. Everything is. They just don't make it easy.

I suppose this wouldn't be the right place to ask for rips then? Lol. I really wish we could preview the item on iTunes first. I'm curious to see how they'd look in 1080p.

I was going to download Beauty and the Beast on iTunes now, only to find out that Disney have removed it:/ Now I'll have to wait... 5-6 years, or more(?), to get a digital copy. Remember to download The Lion King and Lady and the Tramp before they end up back in the vault again... Does anyone know if Snow White and Bambi was released on iTunes when they were available the last time?

To bad that there are different iTunes stores for each country. The Norwegian store does not supply Alice in Wonderland (1951) or Atlantis: The Lost Empire, like the American does for example, but we do get to buy Aladdin. Not in HD, but still...

Bambi was definitely available, both in HD and in SD. And I'm 99% sure Snow White wasn't. There's still a way for you to get Beauty And The Beast on iTunes and that's the Digital copy on the recent US 3D release. Even if you're from Norway, all you need to do is open a US iTunes account in addition to the one you already have.

Pretty sure you won't have to wait 5-6 years though. With stuff like 'Disney Studio All Access' I'm sure digital copies will be more available than ever before.

I just got an Apple TV and it has gotten me even more excite for the digital future. Eventually I'm sure iTunes extras will be available through apple tv, and yes, Disney Studios All Access will I'm sure make a big footprint in the digital world. Exciting times ahead, to be sure.

I noticed that The Black Cauldron in HD is rent-only. You can only purchase the SD version. Anyone know why this might be?

I still haven't quite wrapped my head around how iTunes releases work. It seems some of them coincide with bluray releases, while some don't. For instance, when the Lion King was released on blu-ray, the entire trilogy was released in HD on iTunes that same day. Makes sense. But, just recently with the releases of Home on the Range and Treasure Planet... Home on the Range IS available in HD, but has been for a while, since before the bluray release. Treasure Planet, on the other hand, has no HD option at all. Gahhhhhh I don't get it.

Just a small update. Some Blu-ray movies now allow for an HD download of the movie through iTunes as well as the usual SD version (Jass, Hunger Games). It appears the "HD Digital" term Disney has been using for a while refers to the exact same practice. The first titles to get it should be Cinderella and then Tinkerbell: Secret of the Wings
