Sorry, I wasn't clear enough. What I meant is that this year they have several films with high chances of a nomination. According to Wikipedia, until now they've only been nominated three times in three different years, but this time it's possible they could get more than one nomination in the same year. And if they won, it would be their first award in the category.

Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Adventure looks interesting. I had heard about it, but hadn't watched the trailer and didn't know it had already been released. It has the same type of animation as A Scanner Darkly, right? Does that count as animation for the Academy? Drifting Home doesn't look bad either and Escape from Hat sounds like it could have potential.
Sotiris wrote:By the way, isn't Spellbound supposed to come out this year too? They haven't announced a release date for it yet, so it may have been pushed back to next year.
I wasn't sure if it came out this year or not; that's why I didn't mention that film. The last thing I read is that its original December release date had been moved and no new date had been given. I think it most likely has been postponed, but there's still a chance it could come out this year. Out of the two upcoming Skydance films, that's the one I'm most excited for (especially because of Alan Menken's involvement). I also think it's more likely than Luck to have chances at awards since it's from one of the directors of Shrek, while Luck is by the director of the DTV sequel The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning and a couple of Tinker Bell films. Interestingly, both are female directors. By the way, when I listed the artists who have joined Skydance, I forgot to add Linda Woolverton, who is one of the screenwriters for Spellbound, lyricist Glenn Slater or these two directors (Peggy Holmes and Vicky Jenson).

Sotiris wrote:Not really. Aside from the Lasseter stigma which critics will take into account, the film won't get a theatrical release. It's an Apple TV+ exclusive which limits its exposure and reach.
CODA, which was released by Apple TV+ and was given an extremely limited theatrical release which they didn't even report box-office grosses on, won Best Picture. So they know how to play the Oscar game now. Apple will probably give Luck a token limited theatrical release like they did with Wolfwalkers.

Netflix also distributed A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon and I Lost My Body, so they've actually had five nominations in total. It's odd that list counts Mitchells vs. the Machines, which they acquired streaming rights from Sony when it was more-or-less finished, as Netflix, but not those two as well.

Both Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly were submitted for the Best Animated Feature Oscar and marked eligible. Although, to date, the only mo-cap/rotoscoped films to be nominated in the category are Monster House, Chico & Rita and Loving Vincent.

Oh, it's true. I thought there had to be more, but I supposed that chart should be right. You can never forget to take the info on Wikipedia with a grain of salt.

Oh, you're right. Thanks for the info. I imagined it would be eligible, but I wasn't sure and didn't have time to do research. I don't think I knew Monster House was also done with the same technology, though maybe I did and I had forgotten about it since it was released such a long time ago.

They've done it quite early in the year this time. Normally, it's not updated until we're closer to awards season. I guess it's because of the Emmys. Disney produces more and more streaming content nowadays they have to promote as well. I like that they divided the productions into two categories. It's more organized this way and we can know which titles they're submitting for film awards and which ones for TV/streaming awards. It's no surprise that Turning Red is in the theatrical category and Chip ‘n Dale in the streaming one, though. The categories they're aiming for are already available for the streaming titles, as well as other promotional content. Among other things, they're apparently submitting two original songs: "Save the City" from Hawkeye and "Galactic Dreamer" from Star Wars: Visions.

By the way, the teaser trailer and poster for Skydance Animation's first feature film, Luck, were released a few weeks ago. Lasseter's name is not mentioned in them, but they say it's "from the creative visionary behind Toy Story and Cars" on the poster. It's not uncommon not to feature the names of the creators when promoting animated films, though, since they're usually not well-known by the general public. There'll be a presentation about the movie this Tuesday at Annecy, so maybe we'll get more details about it.

Here are some articles about Luck's presentation at Annecy and some interviews with the film's director, for anyone interested. One of them says the movie will have an awards-qualifying theatrical run in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago before launching on Apple TV+, so I guess they plan to submit it to the Oscars.

1. Wendell & Wild - in select theaters October 21st, on Netflix October 28th.

2. My Father’s Dragon - in theaters and on Netflix in November.

3. Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio - in select theaters: To Be Announced, on Netflix December 9th.

I'm honestly more excited to watch these films more than Strange World or the pointless Pinocchio remake.

Netflix is also giving theatrical releases to Scrooge: A Christmas Carol and Drifting Home which probably means they are planning to submit them to the Oscars as well.

Here's also a behind-the-scenes featurette. I believe the second teaser trailer hadn't been posted here either.

Wendell & Wild also got a teaser recently, as well as its first reviews, which are quite good, since the film already premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.

I watched Drifting Home the other day. I enjoyed it, but also had some issues with it. Personally, I don't see it being nominated.

It's interesting they've made yet another adaptation of A Christmas Carol. I heard this one's a musical, though it doesn't have new songs but "re-imagined" ones from the 1970's live-action film Scrooge.

Netflix's Apollo 10 1⁄2: A Space Age Childhood was submitted for consideration in the Animated Feature category, but got disqualified. While Netflix has filed an appeal, it's unlikely the decision will be reversed.

A24's Marcel the Shell with Shoes On was submitted for consideration in the Animated Feature category, but it's not certain it will be deemed eligible by the Academy.

So far, only one animated film has been made available for streaming to Academy members in the Best Picture category. For those who don't know, even though you're able to submit a film for Best Picture at no additional cost, in order to upload said film to the Academy Screening Room (the only form of screener that's allowed anymore), you need to pay $20,000. This only applies to the Best Picture category; for other categories such as Animated Feature, Documentary Feature, International Feature etc., films can be uploaded for free.
Here are the films in the Academy Screening Room as of Sept. 27.

“All the Old Knives”
“The Bad Guys” (animated)
“Emergency”
“Good Luck to You, Leo Grande”
“Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song” (documentary)
“Hustle”
“Marry Me”
“Master”
“Navalny”
“Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams”
“Thirteen Lives”
“Turn Every Page: The Adventures of Robert Caro and Robert Gottlieb” (documentary)

Why would Universal waste $20,000 like that to nominate The Bad Guys? :? Also Marry Me? rotfl

The only animated movie this year that has a chance to be nominated for Best Picture is Pinocchio.

Paying $20,000 for The Bad Guys in the Best Picture category... Talk about burning money.

I haven't seen quite a few of these yet to compare (Wendell & Wild, My Father's Dragon, The Sea Beast), and at least the former seems near the top of several predictions so I should see it, but I imagine Del Toro's film and Turning Red are the ones competing for the win. I don't think Strange World stands a chance, even if it was a surprise big hit like Zootopia was. BTW, the forum is giving a lot of error pages today.

This marks the first time four different countries have chosen an animated film as their entry in a single year and raises the total amount of animated entries in the history of the category to twenty five.
It's interesting that so many countries have selected an animated film as their entry this year. We'll see if any of them ends up being nominated. I actually hadn't heard about any of them before.

It's curious it was disqualified when past films made with the same technique have been deemed eligible and have even been nominated, as estefan pointed out. I don't think Apollo 10 1⁄2 would've been nominated anyway, though. I've watched it and it felt more like a documentary than a work of fiction. I found it interesting, but also a bit boring.
Sotiris wrote: Tue Oct 25, 2022 5:19 am A24's Marcel the Shell with Shoes On was submitted for consideration in the Animated Feature category, but it's not certain it will be deemed eligible by the Academy.
That one, though, seemed like a strong contender. If it's finally disqualified as well, that'll increase the chances of other films. I haven't seen it yet, but judging by the trailer, it has a lot of live-action footage, so it would probably be fair it was deemed ineligible.
Sotiris wrote: Wed Oct 26, 2022 4:36 am So far, only one animated film has been made available for streaming to Academy members in the Best Picture category.
I remember you mentioned this once, but why is the Best Picture category the only one that's not free? Is it to limit the number of entries?

Yeah, it doesn't seem to make much sense. Although, perhaps being in the Best Picture category on the Academy Screening Room increases the films' chances of being watched by members and therefore get nominated in other categories? I heard Marry Me, for example, has odds in Best Song and I guess Universal hopes The Bad Guys could get a Best Animated Feature nomination.

By the way, Wendell & Wild has gotten a full trailer, while Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio premiered at the London Film Festival and, as expected, its first reviews are very positive.
