We'll probably get the same nominees for the Oscars too. The only film that's not a guarantee is Wendell & Wild. I hope it doesn't make it and a 2D film does instead. I'm rooting for My Father's Dragon. All of their features got nominated up until now and I'd hate it for their streak to end.

First FYC ads for Disney's candidates in the category this year. It's noteworthy that they include "Best Picture" in both Turning Red ads, even though it's not among the categories listed on the Disney Awards website.

It's really noticeable that the FYC ad for Strange World doesn't mention a specific Oscar category they are promoting the film in nor does it include any quotes praising it. It's basically just a poster.

Yeah, it's true. They have to promote it, but they know it doesn't have any chances, so they don't make any effort to do it properly. I think it would be less embarrassing for them to do a normal campaign for the film. They're paying for the ads anyway and if they found good quotes for Lightyear, they could find them for Strange World as well. After all, both films have more or less the same scores on Rotten Tomatoes, and Strange World even surpasses Lightyear on Metacritic (65 vs. 60).

My favorite of the Turning Red FYC ads is the second one where Mei is in a kimono. It feels obvious to me that Disney was putting most of their bets on Turning Red and Lightyear this year, and Strange World was sort of expected not to do well which is why they didn't promote it. I think Lightyear's under performance was the only surprise. I wouldn't have expected it to do that bad on paper either. And having seen it, I thought it was "okay." I wonder if they'd called it "Buzz Lightyear" instead, if it could've done a bit better at least.

To me, the song at the end of Turning Red was sort of a nostalgia kind of thing, not a serious song. Sort of seems weird for me to see it promoted.

Twenty-one animated films are in contention for Best Animated Film at the BAFTAs this year.
There are also 21 animated movies competing at the BAFTAs, some of which are not among the Oscar list that was released: “The Amazing Maurice,” “Blind Willow Sleeping Woman,” “Scrooge: A Christmas Carol” and “Where is Anne Frank.” Could any of those be among the seven shortlisted when they’re announced in January? The animated movies that are not on the BAFTA list but are among the Oscars eligibilities include: “Drifting Home,” “Goodbye, Don Glees,” “Inu-Oh,” “Lamya’s Poem,” “Little Nicholas, Happy as Can Be,” “Mad God,” “New Gods: Yang Jian,” “Oink,” “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” and “Run Tiger Run.” Three films will ultimately be nominated.

Oscar voters are only required to watch 9 out of the 27 films submitted in the Best Animated Feature category to pick the nominees.
Voting in the category is done by volunteers from all branches of the Academy, not just the Academy’s Short Films and Feature Animation Branch. Each voter has been given a list of nine films as required viewing and must watch all the films on that list in order for the vote to count. But the emailed instructions do allow some leeway, reading, “Please view as much as you deem necessary to make your professional judgment as to whether or not each film is Oscar-worthy.”

Do you know if the live-action criteria is similar, or if they're just treating Animation so differently?

The BAFTA shortlists are out. It's quite disappointing that not a single 2D-animated film made the cut. I guess voting members think Minions 2 is better than My Father's Dragon or Where Is Anne Frank.

Where is Anne Frank and My Father's Dragon are much better than Minions, Puss in Boots, Lightyear and The Bad Guys. Unfortunately Where is Anne Frank came out early in the year and was forgotten (and I honestly prefer to think it's because of that and not another reason) and My Father's Dragon came without much buzz unlike Wolfwalkers.

Hopefully, they'll bounce back this year with Elemental (which I think will be #1 in its second weekend) and Wish, which will be #1 for three weekends until Wonka comes out December 15th.

No surprise there. Despite the loss in the Animated Picture category, Disney ended up winning 9 Golden Globes this year.

Here's how many votes it takes to get an Oscar nomination in the Animated Feature category.
The Short Films and Feature Animation Branch has 867 voting members, making it the second-largest Academy branch. Normally that would mean that 145 votes would secure a nomination. But voting in this category is open not only to all members of the branch, but to all Academy members outside the branch who volunteer to take part in the voting. Prospective voters were divided into three groups, and each group was required to see an assigned group of nine films out of the 27 that qualified. The number required to land a nomination depends entirely on how many members participated in that process.

The Producers Guild nominations were announced yesterday. These are the candidates for best animated film:
Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On

Minions: The Rise of Gru

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Turning Red
Source: https://deadline.com/2023/01/2023-produ ... 235219656/

I'm not surprised to see Minions: The Rise of Gru among the nominees, as the PGA tends to go quite mainstream in this category and select mainly domestic films. But the movie also made the BAFTAs shortlist, so who knows, perhaps it has a chance of being nominated at the Oscars.

By the way, Disney live-action films Hocus Pocus 2 and Pinocchio were also nominated in the streaming movies category. Four out of five titles in that category are from Disney, as Fire Island and Prey are also owned by them. Those last two got good reviews, so I'm not surprised by their inclusion, but Hocus Pocus 2 and Pinocchio didn't. Have Disney even promoted them for awards? They're not featured on their awards website and I haven't seen any FYC ads for them. Although, Hocus Pocus 2 broke streaming records, so I guess that might have helped.
