Who do you think is the more overrated villain?

To be honest, I'd have to say Scar. As the Nostalgia Critic put it, most villains are interesting before and after they gain the power they want. But when Scar gets it, he's not as interesting and starts acting like a spoiled, whiny little prima donna.

They both annoy me, but definitely Maleficent! OMG that villaness gets ALL the attention, especially by Disney fanatics. Scar is not interesting and his song sucks in my opinion, but Maleficent is extremely overrated. She really wasn't that great. "For the first time in 16 years, I shall sleep well." MOVE ON!

Maleficent, by far. Maleficent is given the title of "Best Disney Villain" by almost everyone, which unfortunately sets up expectations way too high for the character to actually meet. Scar is only overrated because TLK is popular. That said, I do like them both (Scar is probably my second favorite male villain they've had) and feel they deserve recognition as pretty good villains--just not to the extent that they are treated by others.

I have often argued that Scar is not a villain at all, he is actually a classic tragic hero ala Othello, Hamlet or the Scottish King. The only thing stopping him from being a hero is the story is presented from Simba's point of view.

Um... aren't we all Disney fanatics? Don't tell people to move on. Or Maleficent, 'cause she'll torch you.

I know, I just reduced myself to the level of a Saw fanboy but could people possibly be anymore immature about Maleficent as a villian? It's like kids in the playground: "NUH UH!! She's a wimp!" So and So "is WAY more powerful! She can't even..." Etc. What else can a person say? Other than: know here and now that if we started scanning every single Disney villain for similar imperfections- there wouldn't be a single one left standing as a "properly" rated villain. This is Disney after all, people. Motivations are always completely vague to sketchy at best. It's how they are treated by the film onscreen that makes the difference. The presence they have. This is what makes a great villain and as Dr F pointed out- Maleficent has that covered very well.

To me, Sleeping Beauty & Maleficent fans set the bar and expectation too high that regular movie goers are often like "what's so great about this movie and this villian?" But that's just my opinion.

What are you talking about? That has absolutely nothing to do with what I just said.

AGAIN: if you criticize Maleficent for being an underwhelming villain, you have to hold all the villains to the same standards. And, when you actually look at the other villains, you can see they are all flawed. IF you scan them for motivational logic, backstory, etc. They just turn up and do what you see them doing. That's it. This is why you have to go with the presence the movie gives them. The animation, the voice acting, the atmosphere where they're onscreen, etc.

You know what, I actually prefer Maleficent as a villain in Kingdom Hearts. I think she's a good villain in Sleeping Beauty but her motive just isn't strong enough in the movie. Characters like Jafar come off more power hungry and antagonistic because they want something where they can put others down.

Maleficent, as powerful as she is, only wanted to terroize people for the fun of it. While antagonistic, it's not as antagonistic as trying to gain ultimate power, which is what she tries to do in Kingdom Hearts.

The way she leads all the other villains with such calmness and superioty and the way she manipulates Riku as part of her plan to get ultimate power made me respect her more as a villain. Which, can be canon if you really want it to be. I mean, all the Disney stories are played out as usual it's just they wanted Maleficent to really live up to her name of 'Mistress of all evil' in the game.

To me that puts her ahead of Scar in terms of power.

Terrorizing people for fun can make villains awesome and well played such as Joker. But Mally hardly did anything to accomplish so. She threaten a baby that, in effect, made the baby go into hiding. She didn't do much during the 16 yr run doing any more or whatever but instead trying to find the girl.

Doesn't change the fact the she ended up being Ansem/Xehanort/Xenmas 's bitch tool anyway.

Find me one single villain with a rock solid motivation, story, etc. One single villain who is really more than just a screen presence. One single villain, that is, that Disney created. And animated.

Well, you can't really compare Sleeping Beauty to Hunchback anyway. They couldn't be more different even if Hunchback were live-action. Just ask anyone if there could possibly be a mood where watching both films would fit.
