G-Force 3D observation

Has anyone noticed that G-Force pretends to be widescreen at 2.35:1, but it is actually only 1.85:1 and they use fake black mattes to widen it further, for the sole purpose of extending the 3D effects beyond the picture and into the black matted widescreen area? It gives the impression that objects are really coming out of the screen even further. I don't know of any other 3D movies that have done this, but is is quite a unique trick.

Ooo really? They used that technique in Beyonce's Video Phone video

I think it's not a bad idea.

But isn't 2.35:1 the OAR for the film?

The Beauty and the Beast 3D trailer I saw tonight on TV did the same thing. I thought it looked odd.
