Pizza is Now a Vegetable?

Now kids everywhere will want to eat their veggies!!! :D

But seriously, this has to do with school lunches in the US. In a move that's supposed to supply children with healthier lunches, congress is looking to set new guidelines for what can be federally funded for schools. These new guidelines will allow frozen pizza to be classified as a vegetable when figuring out the nutritional balance of a meal.

These new guidelines will overturn the highly-criticized revisions given in 2009, which looked to limit the current staples of french fries and pizza while encouraging more whole grains.

Well, this doesn't surprise me, since the same party's infamous mumbling idiot president Ronald Reagan once said that "ketchup is a vegetable".

I still say red peppers + strawberries = ketchup. Mix the two sometime and see what the result tastes like.

I couldn't care less about this news item (I'll let the kids decide whether this is right or fair). If I could, I'd still be reeling from the disclusion of Pluto from the 9 Planets Club (destroy my childhood, why don't you!). However, isn't it potentially unfair to give the Grains group such a snub?

I was going to post this news lol.

Anyway this just shows what kind of incompetent and pathetic Congress is.

They're more concern making a fucking law that pizza is a vegetable(which is probably a stupid attempt to spite Obama's school lunch program) rather than finding ways to help fix our economy and debt. Fucking lobbyist. They are first that needs to go. Congress overhaul also seems needed.

agreed! seriously though, They can call pizza whatever the hell they want. I just want them to take their jobs seriously. You cannot convince me that they are not scrapping the bottom of the barrel of issues just to get out of working on the financial crisis on our doorsteps. It's pathetic, and they are just screwing over the future of this country.

Didn't it start out as a pie, then a description of someone's face and now a veggie? Whoa it's like a digimon now

This is just absurd. Next thing we know Congress is going to tell us that the Earth is square, math and science are no longer needed for an education, and candy is healthy for your teeth.

How is that for absurd?

The sad part is that labeling pizza as a vegetable is a cop-put designed to help companies that produce the overly-processed foods sold to the school cafeterias, not the children that eat them. The revisions made in 2009 were designed to help provide for children from low-income families that may not be getting enough nutrition at home; the average school-aged child gets about 40% of their daily nutrients from school lunches.

It's not that pizza can't be part of a healthy diet, but labeling it as a vegetable is absurd and takes up funding for healthier, freshly-prepared foods that could be included on the school menus. And instead of opening up to suggestions that more whole grains should be included (instead of the processed ones found in the typical pizza they serve), the government shrugs it off by claiming they need to be given a definition of what whole grain is. Childhood obesity is a major concern in the US and this kind of attitude will only contribute to the problem.

Even worse is that evil bill congress (and the film and music industry) want to pass which is called the SOPA/Protect IP Act. If that bill pass, you can say goodbye to this site. Even Mozilla, Google, Facebook, and I think Twitter are all fucking piss off at this bill and trying to act in order to get it stopped.

Also, in regards to Pizza being a veggie, I believe there will be jokes on Late Night talk shows referring to the owner of this Pizza Franchise

Image

Also I Can see this mouse saying it's a veggie....

Also Perhaps this fictional restaurant will be added to a Disney Park or even made into a franchise

Truth be told, I never understood why Disney hadn't brought Pizza Planet to the parks! I know there's already astro blasters in tomrrowland at WDW, but if they ever felt the need to re-imagine Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe I think it'd make a good fit. They could probably fit an arcade in there as well, there seems to be a good amount of space.

MSN wrote:The bill also would allow tomato paste on pizzas to be counted as a vegetable, as it is now. USDA had wanted to prevent that.
I would be pointing out at this moment that tomatoes are actually a fruit, except for the fact I also discovered that the US Supreme Court ruled that it is a vegetable back in the late 19th century. Way to keep with the times, guys! Given that a whole tomato is considered one of your five per day, then two spoons of paste is nowhere near that either...

I literally realized just now that I neglected Enigmawing's amazing post. (To his credit, Goliath certainly didn't.)

I literally can't believe the issue of deterring obesity has become fodder for political competition. I know the two sides have been fighting dirty for awhile now but this is just mind-blowing. This is: why hasn't everyone figured it out yet? Everyone knows obesity is a problem, everyone has an attitude about it, everyone would like to stop it (basically everyone). Yet, people actually turn a blind eye to the issue when they realize the party they vote for are taking the wrong side in the issue? That's more than denial. It's SICK! This needs to be broadcast to U.S. citizens, used as a wake-up call. By a source that lets everyone know Obama seems to be for getting kids in America to eat healthier but that opponents of his are against his plan. At least then we could start attributing culpability to the voters, since we do actually still have some power to overturn decisions made by people who are untrustworthy. And supporting kids who are already unhealthy eating bad foods for the sake of profits.

I believe that's actually Michelle Bachmann's platform. :D

But haven't you heard? Telling people to eat healthy is a form of socialism! Trying to make children eat vegetables is a dangerous islamo-fascist plot from secret Al Qaida operative Barack Obama and his nazi wife Michelle, with her evil socialist vegetable garden.

Seriously, things to that extent have been said on all of right-wing hate ...er... I mean, "talk" radio and tv after Michelle Obama adressed the nation about eating healthy. Americans don't like to be told that their way of living is destructive to themselves, their loved ones or even the entire planet. Just ask Jimmy Carter. He tried it once. Was thrown out of office in favor of some guy who promised the people they could burn as much oil and coal as they wanted because, you know, that's "the American way".

Even eating healthy is now a politically heated subject. And it's not "the government" which is to blame; it's the GOP under influence of the Tea Party.

There is a Pizza Planet in Disneyland Paris.

It's obvious Congress has nothing better to do with it's time (forget fixing the economy, curbing inflation, cutting down our national debt, ending all of our illegal wars, ending the drug war, fixing immigration, restoring our liberty, etc.).
Goliath wrote:Even eating healthy is now a politically heated subject.
Not really. It's being forced to eat healthy by banning food that's controversial. It's the elimination of one's right to choose because it doesn't fit someone else's idea of what's right (I guess that makes me pro-choice). I feel health class should be a mandate on all children's curriculums (if it isn't already). After educated on the matter (armed with knowledge), it's up to them to make the right choice.

Whatever behavior people want to take on, no matter how self destructive it may be, is their choice (whether it be drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, gambling, obesity, prostitution, or even suicide). As long as you're not hurting anyone else (trampling on their rights), it's you're right to do as you please and to deprive them of that right to fit your ideals is wrong.

Nobody is proposing that. This is Tea Party talk.

But eating unhealthy *does* affect society. People who eat unhealthy all the time are far more likely to get sick sooner, have to be taken to the hospital, need medicines, maybe even operations. That's not free, you know. Health care costs are spiraling out of control already, and it looks like it's going to get worse.

I haven't been in a public school in years but I was under the impression that they already banned unhealthy foods, at least in our local schools (maybe I'm misinformed). I thought that's what we were talking about?

It shouldn't affect society, it should only affect the person.

Like I said, ideally everyone should be armed with knowledge and then be free to make those choices (which includes accepting the consequences, whatever they may be). It's an unwritten contract between the people and the government. Government leaves us alone to make our own choices but in exchange we can't ask them to help us when our choices backfire. Responsibility. Accountability. This is what should be happening.

Instead, government restricts our freedom to choose in exchange for a little security. This makes the entire country responsible for everyone else's bad choices in addition to infringing in our right to run our own lives. Surging healthcare costs only prove this doesn't work.
