ABC is developing an hour-long drama based on Beauty and the Beast. Jonathan E. Steinberg is attached to executive-produce and write the project, described as an epic fantasy reimagining of the classic Beauty and the Beast tale. Gary Fleder and Mary Beth Basile (who's the writing partner of Liz Tigelaar, now a writer on Once Upon a Time) are also attached to executive-produce the project, from ABC Studios, through their Mojo Films shingle. ABC's tentatively titled Beauty and the Beast comes as the network prepares for the Oct. 23 launch of Once Upon a Time, the dual universe drama revolving around Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin), her long-lost daughter (Jennifer Morrison) and the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla).

TV movies generally suck. This won't be any different.

Especially because it has big shoes to fill.

I hope you're referring to the Cocteau version?

Not another 'reimagining'...

I thought this great story had been tarnished enough by Beastly, which from what I've seen was only an opportunity for Alex Pettyfer to appear shirtless, yet the filmmakers of Beastly said that it was a very deep and emotional film...

At least most will expect it to be of poor quality.

Any adaptation of Beauty and the Beast is burdened with inevitably paling in comparison to Disney's version.

It's like making a movie about Titanic or Gone with The Wind. Disney's Beauty and the Beast is as close to perfect as it gets and it's looked at as the definitive version.

I don't care what version this is supposed to be a re-imagining of... it's old hat. We've been there done that. And like I said, TV movies don't exactly have a great track record.

Come on, really? There have been tons of adaptations of Beauty and the Beast, and while Disney's version is very good, I would never call it the ultimate version.

But that's the version most people think of when they hear the name, and it's at least the second most popular adaptation(maybe due to heavy marketing).

Or how about instead of re-imagining it over and over and over and over, can't Disney just make a live action version perhaps a carbon copy so to say based on the hit their own successful Broadway Musical....I never saw it sadly when it was on tour so i'd buy it in a heartbeat. Even if it was through the Disney Generations DVD-MOD program, but heck trying to find that is hard and the lack of advertising doesn't help. Or a documentary about Disney and the Stage....

Also apparently they are making a re-imagining of a Live Action Cinderella through Disney .....there's probably another thread about that story....Disney and re-imaging they're animated classics through live action....works sometimes, others, well not so much

A TV production? On ABC? Inspired by Beauty and the Beast and it's only 1 hour long? A waste of time and money.

Disney should instead make a theatrical live action movie, either a new version of the fairytale or a version of the animated movie/Broadway musical.

I didn't realise that. Only an hour long? That's ridiculous.

Seriously, I would even watch a TV version of B&TB that's only an hour long? I agree with Prince Edward that Disney should make a theatrical live-action movie of something.

ABC is moving forward with its reimagining of the classic fairy tale set in a mythical, dangerous world where a beautiful and tough princess discovers an unlikely connection with a mysterious beast.

Human Target scribe Jonathan E. Steinberg (Jericho) will pen the project with Gary Fleder (Life Unexpected) and Mary Beth Basile (October Road) attached to executive produce the ABC Studios project through their Mojo Films shingle.

Jennifer Levin (Felicity) and Sherri Cooper (Brothers & Sisters) are attached to pen the project and executive produce alongside Paul Witt, C. Anthony Thomas, Ron Koslow and Bill Haber.

I only read the excerpt myself, but it sounds to me that, by the "hour long" aspect, it is probably a new series. Not the first time Beauty and the Beast would be turned into an hour-long TV series reimagining, either. Just seems a bit strange to have that come along while they've already got Once Upon a Time.

ABC's [version of Beauty and the Beast] is definitely more in the fantasy fairy tale space. Ours [CW's] is a more a contemporary grounded version.

Beastly would have been better if the main female character was plain looking.(Just having the fairly attractive Vanessa Hudgens without make-up doesn't make her homely.)

Can they make a gender-bender version of Beauty and The Beast?That would be worth watching.

Or a modernization where they all have to live on the streets, Beast is like Robert Englund in that 1989 adaptation of Phantom of the Opera- peeling off layers of his new mutated face, Belle is a prostitute; instead of turning into furniture, the servants turn into flesh-eating rats, and Lafu or whatever his name is finds a case of Viper and gives it out to Gaston's cronies who melt into puddles of lard after they drink it.

Scottish platinum-selling singer and stage actor Darius Campbell has landed the male lead in ABC’s drama pilot Beauty And The Beast, a fantasy re-imagining of the classic Beauty and the Beast tale wherein an embattled princess, Grace, discovers an unlikely connection with a mysterious beast, Shiro (Campbell), a mercenary bodyguard. On the project, Campbell joins recently cast Chris Egan who plays Grace’s fiance Gorrick. (The Grace role is yet to be cast).
