My Mission 1918 novel idea

I am working on a story called Mission 1918 in which a team of UN time travelers are sent back to 1918 to save the Romanov's from the cellar.
The idea is that they flood the room with sleeping gas to knock everyone out and then lead the Romanov's to a waiting shuttle and replace them in the cellar with clones so history is preserved. Someone on another site suggested the Nicholas and Alexandra would never allow someone else to die in their place claiming I didn't know much about them. Another problem was eliminating Russia's shame about the execution. My idea is that once the family reaches the future and the Russian people know what happened they won't be in shame anymore.
So far it's only partially written the team just failed simulation of the mission and haven't been sent on the real thing yet.
What does everyone here think? Could the story work?
