Since you only listed two "real " musicals I am not sure what you are lookng for in this thread. If it's films that a song or two in them, those are not considered by many to be musicals, especially films like Pinocchio, Aladdin, Snow White, et al.

Here's my list of musicals:

Singing In The Rain (1952)
Easter Parade (1948)
Seven Brides For Seven Brothers (1954)
Fiddler on the Roof (1971)
Kismet (1955)
Moulin Rouge (2001)
Rent (2005)
Top Hat (1935)
Royal Wedding (1951)
Gigi (1958)

Too many to name and I'll leave it at that.

Off topic somewhat: My boyfriend and I are going to NYC for my birthday in November and he got us tickets to The Jersey Boys and How To Succeed with Daniel Radcliffe.

Pretty much EVERY DAC that has songs!

Rather than turn this into a DAC faves list, which I've probably posted more than once, I will limit myself to non-DACs, in no particular order. This list is a combination of my enjoyment of the songs AND the story:

(live action or "hybrids")

Mary Poppins
Song Of the South
So Dear To My Heart
Pete's Dragon
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
The Wizard of Oz
The Sound Of Music
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Dr. Doolittle
Scrooge (Bricuisse version)
A Christmas Carol (Menken Version)
A Muppet Christmas Carol
The Muppet Movie
Enchanted
My Fair Lady
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Oliver!
Annie
The Phantom of the Opera
The Music Man

(animation - non DAC)

Charlotte's Web
Snoopy Come Home
Gay Purr-ee
The Polar Express

I really need to watch My Fair Lady and The King and I. I’ve never seen them from the beginning. I'd like to catch all of Streisand's films sometime, too.

Fiddler on the Roof
Hello, Dolly!
Moulin Rouge
Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Hairspray (2000s)
South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut
Victor/Victoria (I saw this recently. Didn’t expect to like it, but really kind of loved it.)
Mary Poppins

The only animated musicals from Disney that would compete (for me), are The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. Also, there are some other films I like the music of, but not really the story/characters (West Side Story, Rocky Horror, Phantom of the Opera, Grease, etc.)

That's exactly how I feel about West Side Story. I LOVE the songs, but don't enjoy the story. "Somewhere" is sublime... ;)

Walt Disney Animated Classics ARE NOT Musicals!!!

Why does everyone insist that they are musicals, just because they have songs in them doesn't make them musicals. They are Animated Classics, what do you think the AC stands for in DAC?????

Elvis Presley made over 30 movies and they were all filled with music, but no one ever called them musicals, with the exception of his concert films.

If you don't find it in the Musical section of your favorite store to shop at, then it isn't a Musical. Even Wal-Mart doesn't consider them musicals, they are family entertainment.

Loosely, a musical would be anything in which the plot is developed or commented on by use of song, so to my knowledge any DAC could be considered one. I wouldn't go by what someone at a store categorizes a movie by as my definition.

Um...

There are ten songs in The Little Mermaid. There are ten songs in Beauty and the Beast. These songs propel the story forward. They are written by veterans of Broadway musicals, Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. The films classify as musicals.

Genre is never a concrete idea, but I would put DACs like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Tangled etc., in the "Musical Genre" before I'd ever put them in genre categories like "Animation Genre" or "Family Entertainment Genre."

A DAC with songs is a musical. Just like it's also an animated feature or a comedy.

A musical isn't limited to the Broadway stage. Whoever decided that?

I never said that "dramadies" didn't exist, what ever they are. You need to be more clear on what you are talking about. I do not consider a 'cartoon' feature length movie which is 'propelled' by songs as a musical. It is still an Animated Feature. If they are not, then why do all or most of you refer to them as Disney Animated Classics (DAC)??? Shouldn't you be calling them DMC (Disney Musical Classics)??

Just because a movie has music in it, doesn't make it a musical. I will again use the Elvis Presley movies as an example. Most of his films had eight to 10 songs or even more, but you never heard them referred to as "Musicals", except for his two concert films, which can be found in the Musicals at most stores like Best Buy.

Just because they don't put the Disney stuff in the Musical section doesn't dictate that they are not musicals, but it also doesn't say that they aren't. I know I am not making a lot of sense, but if I could physically show you the differences it would be a lot easier.

"Mary Poppins" is a Musical.
"Cinderella" is NOT a musical.
"Shrek" is NOT a musical.

Now there are live-action versions of "Cinderella" that are musicals, but those a horse of a different color. Won't open up that can of worms.

Everyone has their own choices as to what they consider a musical, and what is not a musical, but I will stand on my own personal opinion that most Disney Animated Classics are just that - Animated Classics - NOT musicals. "101 Dalmations", "The Aristocats", "Pinocchio", and on and on, are Animated Classics that have music in them, that does NOT make them musicals.

I totally disagree with you junkie. A musical (as quoted from a dictionary) is a play or film that contains musical numbers. See, most of the Disney Animated Classics are musicals. As are most of Elvis' films.

For example, let's look at The Little Mermaid. Just because it is animated does not make it any less of a musical. There are at least 7 musical numbers in TLM, thus making it a musical.

Let's not argue about each person's opinion.

I will stand on my own opinion, and don't believe that just because a movie has a song in it, that makes it a musical. Gads!!!! We would have nothing but musicals.

We each have our own opinions on this matter, and I have stated mine. Whether it is right or wrong, I have stated my position on this topic.

Disney animated movies ARE NOT musicals!!! And you cannot convince me otherwise!!! So move on and list your favorite musicals.

Some that I left off my list include:

Grease
Hairspray (2007)
My Fair Lady
South Pacific
Sound of Music
The King and I

So, I have stated my beliefs on what a musical is, and each and everyone of you has a different opinion. That's what makes these forums great!!!
