I saw the Don't Be Afraid of the Dark remake last Saturday with my mom and we both enjoyed it. I like movies about little monsters causing pandemonium (Gremlins 1 & 2, Critters 1 & 2, BATS). I thought the name Guillermo del Toro in the opening credits seemed familiar. Later at home, I looked it up on Google and found out the reason Guillermo del Toro is familiar is because of Pan's Labyrinth (he wrote and directed it). I saw Pan's Labyrinth with my mom when it was in theaters. I thought then and now that it's a cool edgy film.

This is a remake of a television film from 1973 starring Kim Darby and Jim Hutton. The original was probably the spookiest movie ever shown on television at that time.

Because of the writer's strike this movie was put together very quickly and from first script to shooting script to finished product, the time was only two weeks.

As with most remakes, they use loud music, quick cuts, and lot of screaming to make up for the true frights that a movie like this should have. The original used lighting, music, and very few special effects to earn its place in the annals of 'good' Hollywood horror movies.

I wouldn't waste my money on the new version, the critics aren't being to kind to it, but I am usually my own best critic, and like the other supposed scary movie in the theaters right now - "Fright Night", which is another remake, I would rather watch the originals and save my money. You can find both of these films "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" and "Fright Night" at your local video store or on Netflix.

Haven't seen the remake of Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, but saw the '73 tv movie a couple years back was a very frightening film as were many of the old movie of the week tv movies from the 70s. A few that come to mind Isn't It Shocking, The Screaming Woman, House on Greenapple Road, Weekend of Terror.

Damn it. I mistook this as "Are You Afraid of the Dark" from Nick which was kick ass.
