Today marks the 100th anniversary of Lucille Ball's birth. As festivities continue in her hometown of Jamestown, NY, you can see the mark she left on American culture by tuning into Hallmark Channel for a weekend-long marathon of her beloved 1950s TV show, and also on Turner Classic Movies which is airing a full day dedicated to her films. You can even find her in the webosphere where she's celebrated in the Google doodle of the day! So, I thought maybe we should bring some of Lucy's spark to UD...

Why do you love Lucy? Her comedy has touched so many lives, and today is the day to celebrate it! Tell stories, post pictures, share your favorite "I Love Lucy" moment-- anything goes! When I think of Lucy, I remember watching I Love Lucy in my grandparents’ room growing up, back when Nick@Nite aired shows more than twenty-years old. I asked my grandparents to tell me more about the history of the show and its stars, and looking back, I Love Lucy was probably the first non-animated venture that got me interested in show biz as a business with a history… more than just entertainment, you know? But what really sticks out to me was the cozy feeling of those moments. Sitting on a small bed with my grandmother, watching the black and white images on the screen, and laughing. It felt safe.

As for her film career, I remember watching a movie on television called Five Came Back which is a disaster movie where Lucy played something of a reformed vamp role, I think, who gets stranded in the jungle with other passengers when their plane goes down. This was my first taste of Lucy as something other than a comedy queen and it was fascinating. She performs well, but I think one craves for her to start cracking us up as she did in television, as that’s the Lucy we remember so well.

I have all kinds of I Love Lucy favorites, but I think I’ll choose this moment to share…

My favorite episode of "I Love Lucy" was the one where she tried to pull a fast one on Ricky, but then it went spectacularly wrong, and he found out at the end.

I love "The Million Dollar Idea", episode 79, and the film "Best Foot Forward" (1943).

I used to watch I Love Lucy on reruns on Nick at Nite (back when they didn't repeat the same three shows over and over nightly). Some of my favorite episodes are the chocolate assembly line episode and the Vitameatavegamin episode. I have to admit I never watched any movies starring Lucille Ball (though my family owns a couple).
