These items already in themselves mock the religion. This thread could very easily turn into one that talks badly about religion.
If everyone agrees to be respectful and not badmouth the religion but just the items, I guess it's okay, but, this thread already makes me feel kinda hurt by seeing such items.
But a Christian dating site is not bad, disneyboy, a lot of Christians are happiest when they find love with other Christians. Other groups, like gay people, have their own dating sites just for them, too.

Yeah I guess it's not bad about a Christian Dating site.....not as bad as some of the stupid merchandise pictured....and it hurts me such items exist....and probably worse exist....I just laugh at the stupidity of these items....I'm sure there exists other such items in other religions.....but that doesn't make it right...it does make me laugh at these items....though I agree it's stupid that they make these.....and I hope everyone agrees to be respectful and not badmouth religion.....this is just a fun thread.....and I hope everyone will be respectful....
I saw one of these items at a borders one time.....and some items might be sold at this place (although I can guess which ones aren't) ...some theme park in Florida...called The Holly Land Experience

The objective of the thread, from what disneyboy has outlined, is not to mock Christianity, but rather to roll our eyes at those trying to either exploit the religion with eccentric yet truly serious intentions or by making daft jokes out of it. I think that some items are definitely Christian-sponsored (the expanding Jesus has a Bible quote on the box, which denotes a sense of seriousness), while some are obviously jokes by non-religious people (such as spaceman Jesus). Some of those items (such as the talking Jesus doll) are absolute kitsch, some are lame in that they automatically think "Jesus doing xyz" is a formula for comedy genius (when it's such a cliché), and some (such as the chibbi Jesus or "Jesus shaves" mug) come across as contrived attempts to make Christianity look funny and cool, which is rather sad in itself.
As far as Christian-based dating sites are concerned, let me just say that there are plenty of niche dating services out there, including Jewish and Muslim sites (I know because I've seen ads for them). They don't just stop at religion, too: I remember when I was living in Germany seeing a commercial for a dating site for academic/intelligent people (elitist as that may sound)! Obviously there are going to be LGBT dating sites out there, but I assume that most mainstream dating agencies have options for same-sex dating as well.
And yes, I do hope that this thread doesn't turn into another heated debate, and please let's not try and get it there ANYBODY. I think people should take the thread as being about the awfulness of Jesus merchandise (for the reasons I explained in the first paragraph), and not an attack on Christianity itself.

That is exactly how I intended this to be...I couldn't have typed it or said any better myself....especially the last paragraph...and the first

I don't think that's very odd and not elitist at all. We have such a dating site in The Netherlands as well and it gets advertised on radio and tv, too. I think people tend to look for a partner (I hate that word, though) who is on the same 'level' as themselves. Obviously being less educated doesn't make one less suitable to be in a relationship, but I think a lot of people find it easier to make contact with, and have chemistry with, someone who is on 'their level', if you know what I mean.
On-topic:
No, I won't bash religion... at least not there. I'm just so saddened by the merchandise. Making profits with the image of Jesus goes against everything Jesus ever said. He kicked the merchants out of the temple; he told the rich to give away their money to the poor; he told them it's easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye than it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven. Yet I want to guess a lot of people who make and sell these items see themselves as Christians, as do the people who buy this junk. They don't really *know* Christianity. Often it seems non-believers know more about it than actual believers. Take the shaving Jesus for instance: don't these people know that Exodus explicitly forbids shaving? It's only one sentence, but it's in there. So why can they remember the one sentence about homosexuality, but not the one about shaving? Hypocrisy?
Oh, excuse me, there I go already...
Stick to the merchandise! Okay!
It's like those idiot leftist activists who walk around in T-shirts with Che Guevara's image printed on them. It goes against everything Che stood for. He would have despised capitalistic enterprises gaining money by cheapening his revolution with useless commodities. The same goes for the Jesus merchandise.

I will add these awesome sunglasses to this Jesus merchandise thread.
They just look crazy awesome in real life, especially when styled with the proper clothing (hipster stuff

). One of my friends own these, and they just so happen to be atheist, but also happen to love these glasses because they look so cool, and I guess for the irony, or maybe the fun of having an important religious figure on an article of clothing. I guess these aren't stupid to me since they are super fashionable, but I am sure they may seem ridiculous to some people (of the religious type).

Wonderlicious, yea, I agree.
Goliath thanks for not knocking it here, just the stuff. I am glad you also say how Jesus would be against it, and was a good guy.
Alphapanchito, what your friend did was offensive, and it is not just ridiculous "to religious people". You're not supposed to mock people's religion out in public by doing things like that. Then again, even if some people do think that's a right, it doesn't change the fact that it's still offensive, and I say it's wrong.

I somewhat agree honestly. However, I do not think she was openly mocking (or knowingly so) the religion. I think she just believed the glasses looked awesome, because they really do. And she doesn't wear them in public, mostly for modeling clothing. I think if they had something random.. say an elephant hologram instead of Jesus, me and my friend would like them just the same. The fact is they are fashionable. Then again, I can't say why she likes them, but I know why I do, and it is definitely not because of the religious figure printed on them. The fact the sunglasses are made, and are actually very popular, is upsetting, just knowing that it may offend many. But just to be sure I am understanding, it is wrong that you are lowering such a holy image to frivolous things like fashion? And how is this different than wearing things to show your faith, like crosses (which people don't seem to mind at all). I don't know much about the laws of religion and why items like these would offend, because I have seen devout christians wearing rings and bracelets with pictures of Jesus on them. Because she herself is not Christian? I think some of these other items are much "worse", because they do poke fun at the actual religion, most notably with the shaving Jesus, when shaving is obviously forbidden (somewhat) in the religion. Thanks for clearing this up, as you seem knowledgable on the topic, and I have been wondering how some people may get offended, when it doesn't seem wrong to wear the same picture on jewelry.

Er... did I miss something? Since when is it offensive to buy and wear sunglasses?

Well
Alphapanchito, the cross is like a symbol of what Jesus did for us, and that we are Christian. Any pictures that are in something like a frame, like even could be in a ring, are usually like holding a picture of a dear one, someone we look up to.
But pictures of Jesus slapped onto anything, especially two pictures of him both on your eyes that you just look through, obviously feels very different.
But the most important thing is, yes, why you buy the thing and how you feel about it. If someone bought those sunglasses because they loved Jesusu, that would be rather odd, and most Christians would feel that it was wrong, but I guess I could understand someone might do it, just like I can understand some people have pictures of Jesus' face but I still think it's kind of tasteless.
But your friend used an image of someone holy and made it unholy. She didn't believe in this guy and wore the glasses almost to make him seem unholy and just something do adorn her face with. It's just like how peopel wear crosses to show they are Christian, so to wear a cross when you are not Christian is disrespectful (unless it's a different kind of cross, like a plus sign or just a design not mean to be a representation of a crucifix).
Oh, I forgot to mention, I actually really like this one:
disneyboy20022 wrote:
I don't see it as disrespectful, Jesus is being serious and peaceful and, okay, the word cute comes to mind but I just like it. If I had lots of money to spend and I saw it around, I might totally buy it because I don't mean to be "ironic" or de-holying him with it.

Oh please, could you, just for once, be a bit less of a drama queen? How does wearing Jesus-sunglasses when you're an atheist make Jesus "unholy"? She obviously wears the glasses because she likes them; it's not an evil scheme to hurt Christians. And if Christians are hurt by it, then that's too bad, but they should know they do far more offensive and hurtful things themselves and they use their religion to justify it. So I really, really, really, really, really, REALLY think you need to start seeing things in perspective and not make such a big deal out of it.

Oh, so it's not okay to wear Jesus-sunglasses, but it is okay to buy a plastic Jesus-toy that obviouslt ridiculus him, just because you like it? That's rich, Duster, that's very hypocritical of you. And yes, I see you've made up an artificial reason to justify your double standard. I wouldn't have expected anything less.

People People Order in this thread...this thread is just for fun....of why on earth would people would even consider making it...It's wrong, but at the same time it's so bad it's funny. and let's not post our feelings on particular Items...such as going into a big detail of why or why not they like the items (including the Sunglasses. Let's just post something relative such as a stupid merchandise inspired by Jesus) and not argue over religion. This is not the thread to do it in...Please can we just post pictures or videos or links and use a smiley of it or facepalm image...
Keep it clean everyone...and also let's not play the blame game after I post this saying so and so started it...If this gets too out of hand I will sadly request it be locked....

Exactly.

Let's not react too much to what other people are posting.
As for the whole Jesus chibbi thing, I've kinda already posted my views on it. And to lighten the mood once more, here's a little cartoon on Easter cards...

Goliath, I could easily say the same of you, that you need perspective. The girl who bought those glasses obviously knows that it is ironic and she's treating Jesus as something unholy because she doesn't believe in the guy she's wearing, and even Alphapanchito, her friend, said it might have been for irony.
Basically, you're telling me not to treat something I think is holy...as something holy.
Actually, it doesn't matter at all how you respond to this, because as others said, we should not fight. So I won't fight with you. I just mean whatever I say in here and won't take it back.
The only other thing I'll say is that remember it is about how you feel about these items. The girl that bought the item is an atheist and is against the figure on her item as being holy. However, I do not see the chibi Jesus as ridiculing, I see it as a rather endearing, buddy-feeling depiction of him. If I found out the makers of the toy were just doing it to mock him, then I might decide not to buy it. But I don't care if you disagree with any of this at all, because it's quite clear that you're just going to respond very angrily to me instead of calmly trying to actually understand my points.
