The Walt Disney Co. will not pursue an application to trademark the name “SEAL TEAM 6,” the name of the Navy SEAL team that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan earlier this month, a spokesman said Wednesday.
Disney filed three applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on May 3, two days after the raid.
Ten days later, the Navy filed an application to trademark the name “Navy SEALS” in an apparent response to Disney.
“Out of deference to the Navy’s trademark application, we have decided to abandon our claim,” said Disney/ABC spokesman Kevin Brockman.
On its application, Disney Enterprises applied to trademark the name for a plethora of uses including clothing, games, Christmas-tree ornaments and snow globes.
The intended use of the name was for a television show in development in the style of “NCIS” or “JAG” – both of which are adventure/legal dramas.
Thanks for posting this, happy they seemed to find their minds after all. Still rather sick they even tried this, but at least it's done.Sotiris wrote:Disney withdraws trademark application for ‘SEAL TEAM 6′
